We had a great tour with Ryoko. We enjoyed the personal touches (refreshments at her house, meeting her mother, seeing her family's personal shrine and other older parts of their house as well as the garden with bonsai trees at least 40-50 years old) and also learning about the local area - such as the tatami mat repairer, the shoyu and sake factories, and etiquette at the shrines. The time of year of our tour meant that we saw some rice harvesting (by reasonably sized machinery). It was a great day out. Ryoko was alot of fun to be with.

I went on a custom bike tour with my friend and it was one of our favorite parts about our trip to Japan! Our tour guide was so warm and welcoming and provided a great experience for us. We were transported into the movie of My neighbor Totoro! It was so beautiful and a nice getaway from the city :).

Ryoko and Hitomi are amazing guides and so passionate about heat they do. They Re caring and hospitable and my wife and two daughters (16 and 13 years old) all felt that this was the best part of our Japan holidays.
We had electrically assisted bicycles and had a 2 hour ride through quaint little villages and rice fields and forests. Weather was amazing and the bicycles made it so easy and enjoyable to experience rural life in Japan. We saw eagles and herons aplenty!
Lunch was at a temple where we made our own miso paste for some onigiri followed by a visit to two sake breweries, respectively the 4th and 5th oldest sake breweries in Japan.
Ryoko even brought us to her home to enjoy some cold green tea and snacks. And we got toeet her shiba inu called Muku!
10000% would return in a heartbeat.

I am so thankful to Taco and Ryo for their flexibility and responsiveness on the 1-day Rural Villages and Brewery Town tour. We had a last-minute change of vacation plans and I contacted them directly via their website to ask about availability over a 1-week period. We were so lucky they had one day available!
Ryo was a fantastic English guide and we learned so much about the area's history and traditions, what it was like growing up in the Japanese countryside, and how it's changed over time. She went above and beyond to answer our many questions and we just loved the overall conversation with her. She also helped me live my dream of feeling like I was in a Studio Ghibli movie. Doing the bike tour in May was special since we also got to observe rice being transplanted to the rice paddies!
Overall execution was excellent. The train instructions and tour program guide sent beforehand were clear. Ryo was prepared with ponchos in case it rained. Biwako Backroads is really the way to dive into the Japanese countryside where domestic tourists typically visit.

We highly recommend this tour: it was the best excursion we did during our trip in Japan. Our guide , Ryo, was excellent -energetic, friendly, knowledgeable and lots of fun. The tour program was very well organised and comprehensive aiming at showing us the various dimensions of life in the countryside on the North of Kyoto. Long bike ride through the rice fields and villages, visit to the local soya and sake breweries of Kinomoto, charming old village, and visit to Ryo’s home where we had a cup of tea with her lovely mother and cute Shiba dog. Many thanks again to Ryo for this unforgettable tour and to Takako for organising it!!

We loved this experience. Our guide, Ryoko, was so excited to share some of the history and culture of her home town and despite the chilly rainy day, the whole experience was very warming. There was not one part we did not enjoy. Getting away from a city, doing the bike tour, and then going to soy and sake breweries that were many generations old along with being welcomed into her home was just what we were looking for to end our visit to the Kyoto area. In our donabe cookbook I came across the phrase ichigo-ichie, which I believe means every moment in life is a life time treasure. We felt this experience was just that for us. We would highly recommend getting away from the bigger sights for a day for something like this.

This itinerary was Day 2 of a two day trip with Biwako Backroads and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. Our guide Ryoko was the perfect ambassador for her hometown area of Shiga, introducing us to the most scenic countryside spots on our morning cycle and then helping us connect with locals in Kinomoto brewery town in the afternoon. Golden rice fields, fall foliage, an ancient tea field, local sake and soy sauce tasting ... this was a memorable day.

My daughter and I did an ebike tour of Nagahama City with Biwako Backroads. It was by far our FAVORITE experience from the entire trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and kind. The ebikes were super fun - what a wonderful way to experience village life in Japan outside of the major cities!
The tour provided us with opportunities to learn about Shinto and Buddhist shrines, visit a pure land Buddhist temple, see some beautiful countryside, and we made and ate amazing food! If you're looking for a unique and memorable experience where you'll be well cared for, don't miss the chance to take one of their tours!
