Tip if the Highlands

Due to personal reasons Avril could not guide us so she arranged for us to join another (identical) tour. Our new tour guide was George who was knowledgeable and kept things interesting. George took the time to explain the area we were visiting along with some of the history. Overall it was a fun day filled with fantastic scenery.

"Dun" miss the castle ....

This was probably the best excursion we took during our UK and Scotland cruise. Our driver/guide was Amy who did a great job in both roles. It is not easy to drive and talk to a group at the same time.
One of the reasons you should take this excursion is because it is done in a 16 passenger van ..... easy on, easy off, no wasted time waiting for 40 people to enter, exit, use toilets, etc.
Dunrobin Castle is a must, the interior is amazing - even though you visit a small number of the 189 room - each room is decorated in a period style.
As you approach the castle from the main road it is very deceiving because you only see a very small portion of it. Once you go to the other side to see the massive front facing the water you will be amazed. There is a small cafe inside for fresh snacks.
The gardens compare with Versailles.
Also, be sure to go to the falcon and hawk demonstration in the gardens.
Their flight patterns and training is impressive. The narrator fully explains how they were used on a daily basis to feed the castle residents.
The history of the castle owners is quite controversial.

We made a quick photo stop at Loch Fleet before visiting the village of Dornoch, a quaint beautiful town. Lunch options were limited - "Greens" at the courthouse was perfect.

Last stop was Balbair Distillery for samples. The scotch was tasty and strong.

“Go to the north” a stop on cruise with April

Avril is bubbly, cheerful and shares with us the love of her region. Lots of explanations about the history of Scotland, ways of life... There were only 4 of us in an extremely comfortable minibus. Departure and return to the boat in Invergordon. Magnificent Dunrobin Castle and gardens, superb views of the loch, seals, Scottish cows. Dornoch is a very charming village. And finally distillery with tasting for amateurs. Wonderful day. Thank you April.

Absolutely the Best!

Absolutely the best - top notch! We would highly recommend this tour and this company. It was a wonderful day and our guide, Amy, was terrific. Don’t miss the falcons!

Can’t wait to come back and do another adventure with this team.

Wonderful tour in the highlands - highly recommended!

Avril is awesome. So informed and fun to travel with. She is so full of energy and information! Lots of chat and banter all day in a very comfortable van. I’m now watching Outlander because of Avril 😉. We had a great day. Dunrobin Castle and its gardens were amazing, as was the Falconry display. After Dunrobin we went to the delightful small town of Dornoch for a lunch stop (and tried haggis!) and shopping. Dornoch proved to be very interesting. We also went to the Bal Blair Distillery. I’m glad we came here and enjoyed tastings of their whisky and of course, bought some to take home. Avril made sure that we enjoyed the tour that she even stopped at Glenmorangie so my friend could take a picture. We spent 7 hours exploring and returning to the cruise ship in good time. I highly recommend Avril's Travels for a wonderful tour in the highlands!

Avril is awesome. So informed and fun to travel with. We saw seals a wonderful falconry show beautiful gardens a great distillery and gorgeous views all the while traveling very comfortably

A trip from Invergorden.

Amy was our driver, she was knowledgeable and interesting. The castle was great and the Falconary exhibition is not to be missed.

Best private tour on 15 day cruise!

Avril’s tour was one of a kind. She was prompt, friendly, funny, and spoke great English. She met us in the pickup area and led us to the van. She had borrowed a friends van since hers was I out of commission. We had a nice small group of 6 people and I was fortunate to be able to sit up front with her. She was very conscious of the weather and modified our tour so we could be able to get great pictures. She was very knowledgeable about the history of the Scottish highlands and history as well. She was able to get us to the Dunrobin castle before all the big tour buses arrived and even got us the tickets to sneak buy the lines. We did pay her back for the tickets of course. She even told us how we could get down the steep incline to the gardens by using the free shuttle. We saw a great exhibition of how falcons and hawks hunt their prey. She attempted to bring us b the “hairy cows”, but the cows were not cooperating. After that she brought us to a small village to get a bite to eat and shopping. Since we were ahead of schedule, she added an extra highlight not part of the original tour. She brought us to the “million dollar view” and it was worth every penny with the weather fully cooperating. We then went to the distillery and we got some free tasting of whiskey. On the way back to the bus, she opened her trunk and surprised us with a little surprise. She made sure to have us back to the cruise ship in plenty of time. We would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone looking for a small personalized tour. You WON’T be sorry you did

Absolutely wonderful tour of the Highlands!

I found Avril's Travels doing pre cruise research and I liked the look of what was available. Avril met us as arranged outside the Port gates. I’m talking we discovered that Avril was from Clan Ross as was my husband! A distant relative! She is so full of energy and information plus fun! There were 6 people who had booked the tour in our van. We had a great day. Dunrobin Castle and its gardens were amazing as was the Falconry Display.
Dornoch proved to be extremely interesting. Lots to do and see. Avril made sure that we enjoyed wonderful views and provided lots of information.
We spent 7 hours exploring - 9am to 4pm - returning to the Cruise ship in good time. I highly recommend Avril's Travels! One of the best tours so far!
