Interesting house and grounds
2021年11月
A lovely place to go away from the beaches. There is a small steam railway - but do not expect anything grand, and it does not go very far but it is different. The main building is mainly a shop and restaurant both of which we visited, and it is an easy stroll round the grounds. The owner was there and explained about the history of the place, and tempted us with some rum - which was delicious. The lunch was good - although the service was slow but a lot of people arrived at the same time and nothing is done in a hurry in th heat. I would recommend this as a visit for anyone visiting the island.

Simply Stunning
2021年11月
We have visited the Abbey three times now over a period of about 7 years and each time something new has been added. The proprietors have gradually and beautifully restored the Abbey, its grounds, make probably some of the best quality rum on the island and now, with the steam train, the whole experience is even more memorable. A great place to visit.

An expensive and disappointing morning tour
The train ride was the highlight, it was well hosted and informative. However, once we arrived at the house there was no further attempt to guide or inform. The guide book was helpful but it ended there. No information about the slave heritage, no information about the rum production process either. A rum tasting it was not, it was a taste of rum, with no attempt to explain anything of the taste or character of the dribble of rum reluctantly offered. At $60 per person I would have expected more! My wife and I have enjoyed many of the tourist attractions in Barbados, without doubt this was the least enjoyable and poorly hosted. Without the train ride experience I would have scored it even lower!

Lack of History re: the Slaves
Place is orgsnised, well sign posted and extremly clean.
Staff is proffessional, polite and very helpful.
Was very disappointed there were no mention of the history of the slaves eg. of where they lived etc.,
Personally l believe the flags at the entrance was flying in the wrong order.
1st it should be the flag of Barbardos, follow by their owner next choice.
Please give the country you are enjoying and grown to love respect.

Thank you for visiting St. Nicholas. I do understand your comments and points made and would like to assure you that we do discuss the role slavery played in developing the planation’s and sugar industry in Barbados. We do so openly when asked and also display the names and details of the slaves on the planation circa early 19th century and I am sure you would have seen this on the right opposite the gift shop window along with their artifacts along with the Amerindian tools and effigies dating back 6,000 years. We are currently sourcing grant funding for the improvement and expansion of our house museum which will include some exciting archaeological finds relating to slavery and life on the planation to be exhibited within. Unfortunately the slave settlements no longer exist and we can only guess at their location through the field names. St. Nicholas has been the site of many archeological digs over the decades to try to locate the Slave burial ground and this too evades us and we believe that it is possible that the slaves where either buried on another plantation or along the coast close-by at Walkers and Morgan Lewis since many artifacts have been found in these areas. I do agree that sometimes discussion of slavery can be uncomfortable for some visitors but let me say it does apply to both white and black visitors and at times it can be painful for the latter. Our tour guides are willing to discuss this aspect of our past history and I am sorry if they did not realise your interest in this as the display of the slaves on the plantation is part of the exhibition that explains the relationship of slaves and their importance within the plantation and normally would be the impetus for such discussion in an open and meaningful way. Towards this goal we encourage our school children to visit and understand the history of slavery and the artifacts of their existence.  I do accept the exhibition is limited but we expect this will be amplified both in scope and emphasis in our future plans for the house museum. Regarding the flying of the flags at the Railway Station, the Barbados flag flies proudly and prominently higher than the surrounding flags. Both my husband and myself are born Barbadians and very proud of our heritage here, and the restoration of this wonderful plantation has been a major personal family effort to save this vital piece of Barbadian history.

Lovely relaxing day out
2021年10月
Well this was our third trip on the railway and always nice to bring along a new friend to experience it. Our first time was the day it opened and I think that was the diesel engine.
The sounds and smell of a real steam engine make this extra special.
Along with a tour around the house (which I must have done 30+ times by now) and lunch on the terrace it is a pretty near perfect afternoon.

The best place to visit in Barbados
2021年10月 • 家庭
If you're looking for a break from the beautiful Barbados beaches then we can definitely recommend a visit to St Nicholas Abbey. Easy to find, (use Google maps), from the moment you arrive & are greeted at the gate, you know you are in for a quality experience. The facilities, cafe, gift shops and parking were all well organised. The staff welcome you to 'board the train' and it's such a beautifully restored and narrated experience from the team on-board. We won't provide many spoilers, but it's topped off with a fabulous view from the top of Cherry Tree Hill, which was somewhere on our visit list too! Then you get to visit the wonderful plantation house, with again a fabulous guided tour at no extra cost if you wish. Then the real highlight of the day for me, we got to sample some of the amazing Rums they make in the distillery. We were lucky enough to meet Simon and spend some time in his delightful company before having a bottle of Rum engraved to remind us of the best visit we had whilst visiting the island. Definitely should be top of your visit list when you next head to Barbados!

Lovely tour, interesting, fun & scenic
This was a last minute deciscion to visit and I'm really glad we did.
Right from a lovely warm greeting from Michelle on the gate to us leaving, we felt very welcomed.
The tour of the lovely 17th century mansion was very interesting, as was a film made in 1935 by one of the family members. The history and humour very much brought the history of both the island and the plantation to life.
Larry then chats very humorously about their rum & of course you are welcome to sample some.
You can meander around at your own pace, enjoy the gardens and the cafe.
The entrance fee includes a ride on a small steam railway up to Cherry Hill. The views up there are lovely. There is then a very entertaining/educational history talk about the railway before your journey back to the mansion. The train ride & talk is about 40 mins in total.
This tour was great value for money, educational & interesting.

Train ride alone is an excellent reason for the visit but they have rum too!
We had a really nice time here! No need to book an expensive tour, the entrance fee of $60 bds includes a ride on the steam engine train, a guided (or self guided) tour of the house, and a rum tasting! Just make sure to check the timings so you don’t miss out on the train! The train stops at the top of Cherry Tree Hill which is a lovely viewing spot and you can see the entire east coast of the island! Then it takes you back down and to the house for a tour and rum tasting. The guides were all super friendly and well informed. One of the owners of the estate did the rum tasting who was very kind and full of jokes! You can also watch an 18min historic footage of Barbados and the distillery, which my husband found really interesting but I felt it was a little long.

We asked our hotel in advance how to get there and back and they told us usually the taxi driver would wait there while we visited for $10usd per hour and bring us back. The fixed fee for taxis from our hotel to the abbey was $60bds one way.
On the day, perhaps it was a slow day, and our taxi driver was happy to wait for us at no extra fee while we spent about 2h30 visiting. So we tipped him instead!

Little trip for steam train lovers.
Spent a lovely few hours here. Taxi driver called Malaki picked us up from the hotel and came back for us later. Good journey with a guided tour of the area. Train ride was great. Crew were very informative and my husband had the opportunity to help push the engine round on the turntable. Stunning views at the top of cherry tree hill with loads of photo opportunities. Nice house and the rum tasting was lush. All staff were friendly and I would recommend this trip.
