Our guide Santos was advertised - relaxed, focused, skilled, and a good listener when one of our group realized their shoes were not up to the demands of the "trail." We had a great time. A good workout if you go at a decent pace. Diverse terrain. A little scrambling that was fun. Learning about some plants and wildlife. And of course great views. Definitely worth doing, and having a guide seems very practical for this "trail." Recommended!

Our guide, Santos, was right on time to pick us up. He has a lot of knowledge about the native plants and rock in the canyon, as well as great information about Mexican history. The hike was shorter than we expected, as it became too technical to proceed without a rope. Very beautiful canyon!

WOW! We expected a bit of a fast paced stroll, maybe some boulders to climb over; we did not expect the EPIC adventure we experienced on this hike. Santos Davis was our guide. He grew up hiking this canyon, and has a wealth of knowledge on Indigenous, medicinal plants. We learned about several. Santos’ English was fabulous, thankfully, as our Spanish is very poor.

This hike offers several levels to hikers. Those wanting only a beautiful canyon walk and to see the desert up close and personal, but aren’t up for a big adventure, don’t worry! Those wanting a little more, keep going. Those who are strong, able to hoist themselves up a short climbing rope (with the help of a patient, skilled guide), go further! And those who want a really good story/adventure, go as far as Santos will take you. Wear good hikers. Running shoes will do for the first couple of levels.

We are 4 outdoorsy Yukon women. Two of us are 60, the other two are in their 40s. We hunt our own moose, whitewater paddle, undertake multi-day Yukon hikes…just so you have some context!

Have a blast and say hello to Santos for us!

Pick up in FN was right on time. Met up with our group near Puerto Escondido. Santo, our guide was great and told us all about the rocks & plant life. It was fun to climb over boulders and up small rock faces around the pools and small waterfalls. Pants & good shoes are highly recommended for this “hike” which more like a scrabble in places. Santo was positive and VERY helpful with technical cues for getting up and down in tricky places. Felt safe and was exciting and beautiful.

We hired Mario with Wild Loreto to take the two of us on this hike. It’s actually more bouldering than hiking, but we’re fit 70 year olds and had no problem navigating the terrain. Mario talked about the geology as we saw rocks of all colors and substance. We had views of the Sea of Cortez, wild figs growing on the rocks, cactus and some hummingbirds. At the end of our trail was a stagnant pond with vocalizing frogs. Really sweet. There is no waterfall at the end of this hike due to drought, but it’s a perfect desert experience.

Hike with the local expert to see huge boulders, waterfalls, secluded pools of clear water, plus fabulous views of high volcanic mountains and the distant Sea of Cortez. Luis Rodriquez took my wife and me on a fabulous adventure up this scenic canyon from the level plains of the Baja to the hidden natural treasures of the high canyon. Morning was the perfect time--not too cool and not yet hot. With good hiking shoes we climbed over boulders, around waterfalls, and across rock walls. Knotted ropes helped us venture into otherwise unseen vistas. Intrepid vegetation from small cacti to palm trees clung to canyon walls living on disappearing streams and water trapped in the rocks. Luis knows all the unmarked foot paths, and loves sharing his admiration and respect for this natural cathedral. Not a walking tour, this trek requires some agility, but is worth the workout. Luis, fluent in English, will audibly and physically show you the best of the canyon and assure you get the most out of your adventure. It was a highlight of our time in Loreto!

Luis was our guide for an excellent morning scramble a couple of kilometers up the canyon. The route starts as a hike, and transitions to boulder hopping and a bit of easy rock scrambling, and we finished with some short climbs assisted by knotted ropes. The expansiveness of the canyon is surprising, with a series of pools surrounded by vibrant vegetation ascending one above the other. The flora is interesting, with many examples of plants that have adapted to the sporadic water flows by spreading roots broadly across the surfaces of rocks. It's definitely worth taking this trip with a guide, both for historical and ecological background information as well as for route finding guidance and possibly encouragement scrambling (helpful if it isn't something you do often). Our guide did a good job of both.
It's easy to squeeze this in between an early breakfast and lunch.

The hiking trip was really good and the guide (Chaly) was fantastic! Challenging hike if you decide to go all the way and good shoes are a must. Don't say no to the powerade, you'll probably need it. All in all, it was a very good experience and well worth it.
