A wonderful food tour filled with both the past and current history of Mexico. Our guide, Miel Garcia, was incredibly versed in the history of Mexico's food and culture. We visited multiple "mom and pop" type restaurants as well as several food carts. She was very proud to tell us a couple businesses were owned by women only, a big deal in a country that has a history of being patriarchal. Miel was able to give a proficient talk on each type of food we ate and even gave us a lesson on how to properly drink Tequila and Mezcal. Delicious food and beautiful people.

In addtion to tasting tacos and an tomale, we spoke with local vendors on the street and got a short history of the area. We had a great time and the food was delicious! Our guide, Al, was very knowledgeable and friendly. All in all, I would reccomend this food tour as it gave us an opportunity to go somewhere outside of the tourist area.

Our guide, Al, was great. Besides lots of tacos and tamales he gave us some history of Pitillal and introduced us to local street vendors and tortillerias. We also got to see tamales being made by hand at a family-owned establishment/restaurant.

I did the Taste of Pitillal from Vallarta Food Tours last year and wanted to do it again. I love Pitillal. It is a unique barrio which is quite different from most of the tourist areas we normally see.
Much of the tour was the same as last year, with a few exceptions. We started out at a churros stand which was probably the best churro I’ve ever had in PV. Next to this stand was a place where fishermen bring their catches to be prepared for sales to restaurants and markets. The fresh catches were a HUGE Dorado (served as Mahi-Mahi in restaurants), a very large tuna, and 2 containers of very large shrimp. It was very interesting to see.
Back to the tour – we made approximately 6 other stops for carnitas, tacos de chorizo, tostadas de mariscos, tacos de birria de dorado, tamales con queso and bell peppers, and paletas for dessert. New this year was a stop at restaurant Candora, where we got to choose what we wanted on our tacos from a wide variety of fillings. The chorizo was excellent. I have to mention the names of the other restaurants since all of them were wonderful and very welcoming – Neto’s, Pichis, Birrieria Robes, and Tia Anita.
Our guide, Bernardo, was excellent. He was extremely informative and always happy to answer questions. His English is excellent. We had a group of 12 (larger than any food tour I’ve had) but Bernardo did a great job of taking us around, organizing, and making sure we were happy and comfortable.
While the tour is 3-3.5 hours, the time seemed to pass much more quickly. None of us were tired but we were extremely full - satisfyingly so.
Once again, I loved this experience and the food. And our guide Bernardo made it even more special.
I should add – please remember to TIP your guide. They work extremely hard and are great at what they do.

This is so much more than a food tour. It is a culinary/cultural history lesson! Our guide Miel was expertly knowledgeable, and an excellent communicator. From the moment it begins you feel welcome and confident in the experience you’re about to have. The 10:30am tour takes you from breakfast to lunch; savory tacos, desserts, snacks, drinks, and a very wide range of flavors and the history behind them. Skip breakfast and plan a light dinner. If you only do one food tour while in town, this is it!

Bernardo was amazing and knowledgeable! We got to explore a new area in the town that we visit all this time. It was such a cool experience with delicious food. We already ordered tamales from Tia Anita’s and ate on Christmas and can’t wait to go back for someone Birria tacos! We even got great tips on markets etc. Everyone on our tour was impressed! Thank you Bernardo!

Are you still in business? Can’t find an available date. What time does it start? What type of tastings are we going to enjoy?

Yes it's websearch Vallarta food tours. Taste of Pitillal tour is Thursday and Saturday. Our tour started at 11 at the gazebo on the main plaza. We ate a wide variety of tacos...meat, seafood and vegetable, tamales, churros, popsicles and several nonalcoholic drinks.

My wife has a knee problem and can't walk for long periods or long distances. How far is the tour and is the walking done at a slow pace?

The distance between stops is not is that far, compared to other tours I've been on, probably 4-5 blocks, per stop. But, like any walking in Mexico, the sidewalks are uneven, and there is stepping up and down at corners and crossing street. Pace is leisurely though. This is probably the best tour for your wife, if she can handle some walking. And guide is awesome.
