The tour guide, Jorge, was a wealth of historical information as we drove. I enjoyed it immensely. He stopped at a local coffee roasting shop which was delightful. The gardens are beautiful, particularly the many varieties of lilies. The tequila tasting wasn’t my thing, but the description of how it is made was very interesting.

Jorge was an excellent tour guide. Enjoyed is narration as we were traveling to and from the gardens. The Gardens were beautiful.

We took a tour to the botanical gardens. The gardens themselves were very beautiful but not so much the trip there and back. We reviewed the brochure and questioned the salesperson
We asked
How long is the trip and were told about 1.5 hours but close to 3 hours each way
The brochure does not mention the tequila tasting and the salesperson said it was NOT part of our tour.
Both ways we went on a “shortcut” through downtown.
Don’t use this your for the travel we should of used a taxi

Great tour. Our guide Jorge was excellent. The gardens were stunning. We’ve been in other tequila tastings before but this was far superior as we got to experience a distillery and have full shots. Lunch was also excellent.

From the time I booked this tour, communication with the company was excellent! We were conveniently picked up near our condo as I had requested, and reminders sent (which I always appreciate). This was my 3rd visit to the Gardens; the nearly 2 hours allotted there was very suitable, particularly if there are people with mobility issues. I was excited to see the little chapel has been completed…a must see! The coffee stop on the front end & tequila tasting and optional lunch on the back end of the tour were great. We’ve had our share of tequila-tastings in the past; the 4 of us agreed this was the best! Healthy pours, fun toasts and a jolly group! Our guide, Jesus, was a fountain of knowledge of the area, history & plants. I commend his interesting delivery; seamless between Spanish & English!

I took this tour due to my group (normally I just take the city bus $3 every 30min). Both Botanical Gardens and Tequila stop were good. Note that lunch is MUCH better at the Gardens than at the Tequila stop. Tour is actually operated by Viator, which is a Tripadvisor company. My group was the 2nd to last pick up (PU). 30min late, lucky I was even at the PU spot. Next PU, folks where not there, but as I speak spanish, I heard the guide say that the office mis-communicated with those folks and told them 9:30 but we were there at 10:30. Oops.
Tour guide, a nice funny guy, new little about the surrounding area as we drove to Botanical. Could not answer questions well on the way - other tours give a history of Vallarta on the way out, and cover the small towns etc. on the way.
Unscheduled stop at a small town tourist stop for potential trinkets.
Botanical Gardens are a great visit. Eat lunch there if you can, and take the bus (and avoid a tour). Taxi is pricey there and back (about the same cost as the tour)
This tour stopped at a tequila tasting location, which is quite good from an educational point of view (city bus stops there too). This tour ate there, good food, very pricey. (Food is better and LESS pricey at the Gardens).
If you are a novice, first timer to Vallarta, this is a OK/good tour. Otherwise, it is easy and MUCH cheaper to skip and just show up on your own.

Lamentablemente tuve una horrible experiencia en el restaurante. Fuimos con mi mama mi prima y mi pareja yo amo las flores y e tenido la oportunidad de ir varias veces y quise llevar a mi familia el jardín 🪴 las orquídeas 🌺 maravillosas amo el recorrido los cactus 🌵 es algo realmente de admirar la verdad decepcionante que tengas que esperar 30 minutos a que te den una mesa para sentarte pero eso no es todo comprendo pero ni siquiera la hostess te dice en un momento los paso o total decir que tomara algo de tiempo para otorgarnos una mesa los meseros solo pasaban y nunca fueron buenos ni siquiera para dirigirte la mirada mucho menos para preguntar si ya nos atendían después de la larga espera para la mesa llega el mesero después de otros 15 minutos para tomarte la orden tardan otros 15 minutos para traer las bebidas tuvimos que preguntarle por la agua de Jamaica de cortesía las porciones de comida muy pequeñas y caras sabor de lo peor y si fuera poco a mi pareja en el plato fuerte pidió una Pizza 🍕 y se les olvidó meter la orden bueno pasaron 5 minutos y la trajeron toda seca parecía que la pusieron en el microondas para no verse mal de que fue un error nunca se disculpo el mesero hable con el gerente o encargado para devolver la pizza porque no se me hizo justo les recomiendo la verdad no comer ahi mejor lleven su lonche 🥪

The botanical gardens were absolutely beautiful and certainly worth a visit. However, booking through Trip Advisor ended up being absurdly expensive for what it was.
It was nice to get picked up from our hotel and taken there, but you’re taken to one destination first for a bathroom break, but of course there are people selling things there.
Again, the botanical gardens were beautiful and it would have been nicer to stay there another hour or two instead of being rushed through as there was a tequila tasting to get to!
This trip for 2 people ended up costing us $189 CAD, and didn’t even cover a meal at the tequila tasting.
That was far too overpriced. It would have been cheaper to hire a cab from the hotel in PV and get driven there.

We had lunch a short drive away at the tequila tasting facility.
Double check to make sure it's included, we had a problem convincing them our ticket was inclusive. Also be prepared for a lot of stops on the way there!

Do we need to go with a tour or can we go on our own? We are staying at the Friendly Resort and wonder if it would be possible to take a taxi? Or should we book with a tour company?

It isn't necessary to book with a tour company - we went on our own on the bus the goes by and stops at the gardens. You can certainly take a taxi or an Uber - I am not sure of the cost for either. Should you decide to go on your own you can plan your time there - walking the paths, swimming or eating at the restaurant. With respect to the other questions I am sure you can take a taxi/or an Uber from the ship or an Uber if you have an account. From Nuevo Vallarta I believe you could do the same (taxi/ unless you want to opt for a tour excursion. We explore on our own and it is very easy to do so. I am not aware of tours but I'm sure if do some research there will be some.
