This was one of the best TripAdvisor recommendations I have ever taken. If you are staying near Nanaimo, I cannot recommend this tour more. We had an incredibly lucky day, and saw so many humpback whales and orcas. This experience has been on my bucket list, and I am so excited that I was able to meet it. Vanessa is an amazing guide! You can feel her passion for these whales throughout her tour. The exposure suit provided helped aid against the cold very well! Definitely dress warm.

The open boat tour was amazing! Desiree had really great knowledge of the animals and the water and is was really insightful learning whilst spotting whales. We saw so many humpback whales, it was an unforgettable experience.

Amazing zodiac trip around the Gulf Islands and Salish sea. Brilliant naturalist Des who worked really well with skipper Tino to create a magical trip. They are clearly passionate and so knowledgeable about the wildlife. In the 4hr trip we tracked a pod of transient orcas led by Holly. We followed them for most of an hour and they were so close. We had two separate sightings of humpbacks ..a lone female Hendricks and then a pair including Snoopy. So beautiful. Really informative narrative and a guaranteed free trip if no whales are seen. Don’t miss this if you are on the Island

The most incredible 4 hour trip in the zodiac. We spent time with a humpback Nuage and the T65Bs matriline of orcas who were resting and travelling slowly, meaning we got wonderful views of them as they surfaced. Vancouver Island Whale Watch are a very ethical company. They hold other boats to account if they're acting poorly around the whales and will wave their flag at them to ensure that other boats are aware there are whales in the area and to ask them to slow down and keep their distance. Spending time with orcas is always special, and this adventure with VIWW was a true highlight of our trip. Thank you!

I did two tours per day during two days and saw so much. Every tour I was with naturalist Carmen/captain Dave and we had fun everytime. Three out of the four tours we say killer whales and all tours we say humpbacks. I was lucky to see breaching humpbacks (mother and calf). humpbacks swimming over to our boat, breaching killer whales, spyhopping and killer whale Jack had evening snack in his mouth.
Would absolutely join them again if I'm ever back on the island.

An unforgettable day for the whole family!
We chose the open top boat tour for our family of four. Two young children, 5 and 7, suited up (a life vest for the smallest) and sat at the front of the open boat. We were offered goggles to loan and free sun cream, and a choice of where to sit on the boat. The boat holds just 10 paying guests, so it’s really intimate.
Within 15-minutes of setting out to sea on the super quick, super fun boat we were following a family of orcas swimming along the coast! We followed this family for an hour, getting within 200 metres and learning lots of cool facts and background on how they’re protected.
After the orcas we set out to open sea and just 20 minutes later we were within 100 metres of three humpback whales. The guide was super knowledgeable and used laminated guide books to tell us who the animals were and how they’re identified.
Over the 4 hours we saw 4 orca whales, 4 humpback whales (in 2 different locations), harbour seals and nesting cormorants.
The guide, Des, was so passionate, excited and informative. Cannot recommend this little, sustainable company enough!

Once in a lifetime experience. Look no further if you want to support an eco-conscious, ethical and small whale watching business. Van Island Whale Watch was incredible. We booked a private charter for our group of 4 (100% worth the money!) and had Val as our naturalist. She was absolutely fantastic, so knowledgeable, and genuinely loved what she did. We loved how excited everyone got and that she had a whole notebook to note which whales we saw. We also had two orcas come up to our boat to investigate us, which was absolutely incredible (my husband got covered in orca snot!). Our captain was also amazing (I am horrible with names and forget, but thank you so much for being so great!) Val and our captain had so much respect for the whales and other wildlife that we saw, which translated into such an amazing experience. Thanks so much for making our dreams come true :)

Nice tour: we saw humpback whales and one pot of orcas, harbor seals and eagles....
But: our guide was very young and made a semi-experienced impression. She explained in a radio-type style with little spontaneous additional knowledge. Also, most of her explanations could not be heard in front of the boat (5 people did not hear them).
The captain of the boat did a very good job in driving us to the different places. However, when animals were seen he turned the boat always on the same side, which made it difficult for some people to take pictures. Maybe try to alternate sides.
The photographs on the website give the impression that you will see the whales much closer than what you will be actually be able to see them.
I think it is good not to disturb the animals in their environment but a bit closer would have easily been possible as the other boats did.
Still thank you for the interesting tour and your commitment in continuous improvement.

We got to see Orcas! A pod of 5 or 6 swimming about 500 meters off our bow.
Our Guide Vanessa was extremely knowledgeable and shared that knowledge with us. Also very attentive to passengers needs.
We had significant rough water which made 3/4 of the ride hard on our bodies. A bit stiff the next day but worth it!
You may think you don’t want the ugly red suits they have you wear but trust me you do. You will get wet and the keep you warm and dry.
Our Guide Vanessa was extremely knowledgeable and shared that knowledge with us. Also very attentive to passengers needs.

I joined one of their tours, in June 2023. Fantastic scenery , wonderful staff and a really worth it 4 hour trip seeing an ever dwindling nature at its finest. If you find your self around BC, book a tour, because this is really something that you should not miss.

I'm confused about the time scheduling. Why does it say 10:30 am tour and then other times beside it (10:30, 12, 15:30)?

Hi, we are currently running the 10:30am and 3:30 pm (15:30) trips but we switch to only one 12:00pm departure in the fall and spring.
