What a fantastic adventure we had canoeing down this river. We took our kids 8 and 10 in two 2 person canoes. Part of the river is closed due to low water and you have to pull the canoe out and put it on a trolley. We thought this was all part of the fun and we easily pushed it down the path and over the railway line back to the river. It really isn't very far and it was quite funny.
The beaver dams across the river were the best part, some you can get over, others you have to get out and pull the canoe over them. This made it way more exciting than paddling down deep wide waterways.
They can provide beach shoes for you to wear if you don't want to get your shoes wet and I strongly advise you make use of these.
We had a lot of fun and reached the pick up point right on time which took around 3 hours. We didn't plan it but it was a rainy day when we went and as we all got a bit wet it seemed the perfect thing to do.
I would really recommend this company.

Twenty years ago my wife and I did the ROGD self-guided canoe tour and loved it. This year we came back with our teenage kids and did the same. It was pretty much how I remembered it - a cool way to spend a few hours - and the kids had a great time. The one difference was that being later in the summer (our previous visits were in late June), the river was noticeably lower and quite a lot of scrambling about pushing over beaver dams was required. A portage of a few hundred yds around the fish pass is also necessary at the time of writing, so be prepared for quite a bit more effort than simply floating serenely down the creek. To be fair this was all explained to us beforehand, and we did enjoy the hands-on nature of it, so no complaints. That said, I could see it being a bit much for some people.
In all, a good experience although I'd prefer to return at a time of year when there's a bit more flow in the river.

At the time of booking it was known that part of the river wasn’t accessible, yet staff consciously didn’t mention that. You get an email about it the night before the run. Total trip reduced to 45 minutes.instead of 3h A pretty meagre soft pedal kayak run, no rapids. All in tourist trap.

Hi Coen,
I am sad to see this review after the conversation we had yesterday. I hope that you can understand that after 35+ years of small family business it is not our intention to misinform our guests. The river closures are a large change to our operation and try as we might to let every guest know about the changes prior to booking, I apologize we had missed telling you this information. This is a new way of operating for us and we unfortunately do not have control over the closure areas or the dates on which they occur. We our trying our best to adapt to these changes and ensure our guests still have a good time and come back saying "That was awesome!" We appreciate any feedback we can have on how to make the trip more enjoyable and provide all river guests a complimentary lake rental voucher for afterwards to paddle any parts of the trip that were missed from the closures.
Upon returning from your trip you asked for compensation as you opted not to use your lake rental voucher and for our mistake in not telling you about the closures. I asked you what I can do to make sure you feel you received good value for your trip and agreed to your terms. I hoped this would repair some of the challenges you faced during your trip as we had come to an agreement and to my understanding, left feeling satisfied.
We do not advertise our trip as adrenaline filled or having white water and rapids. Even in flood, the river of golden dreams doesn't have rapids and as the water levels drop, as they typically do in late summer, the river becomes a very gentle float.
I hope you can return to us outside of the closure dates (ends August 16 2024) and perhaps in the spring time when the water is flowing faster.

As two experienced kayakers we were super excited to do the self guided tour.
We had a very young guide who spoke very quickly to the group of about 14 — a few canoers and the rest kayakers—pointing to the board and what we needed to do. Made it sound super easy and got us excited.
We set out behind a very seasoned couple who had done the experience many times before. The paddle across the lake was wonderful and the entrance into the river full of geese and lily pads was breathtaking. The dams, brambles, bridges and the experience was much like it was told to us.
However — the water was rushing faster then was thought. Two thirds of the way through I lost control of my kayak trying to duck under the low lying bramble and capsized. Yes , duck under not sideways as was explained to be a no no. But it was too low.
The water was freezing cold and I also hurt myself from the brambles. I couldn’t get out of that particular spot and lost my paddle and couldn’t let go. My friend tried to help me — but the spot I was in was a very bad and deep spot. I had no bailer in the kayak and could not get all the water out — could not see where the plug was. Tried to get in again but because of the area i was stuck in, I capsized again. It was a balancing act as there was no sand bar to climb on to. I was scared as I had been in the water for too long and the both of us didn’t know what to do except wait. Finally after about 15mins of being in the water, other people in the group started to come by. A brother and sister canoe team rescued me. I was frozen and shaking and they had me hold on to their canoe whilst in the water until we could find a sandbar.
They got me up to safety. The area was safe enough for my friend to call the number on the back of the vests. Unfortunately it was not handled how it should have been as I don’t think the person understood what I had endured or how long I was exposed to the elements. They were going to send another kayak down for me but I was in no shape to wait for that to happen. We had to leave the kayak behind. My friend wedged her kayak beside me on the sandbar. Then the canoe beside that. I was able to step over and get in to the middle of the canoe.
A second canoe behind us also capsized. Again experienced rowers.
When we finally got to the end Duel (think that’s the right name) the driver was beyond amazing. Shout out to him. He gave me his personal towel and cranked the heat in the bus. I needed bandages — BUT the first aid kit in the bus was completely EMPTY!! Please please don’t let this happen again!!!!
I’m writing this experience not to complain — but as words of wisdom and to thank the amazing group of rescuers I had.
As beautiful as the experience is meant to be — be completely prepared for anything!! Make sure you wear your water shoes ( i luckily had them on ) do not take valuables unless locked securely around you in a water proof case, take a small knife and rope and have emergency supplies / food/water with you at all times. You never know when you might need them.
To the brother, sister in the canoe, the third sister in the kayak and the daughter in the other kayak— your calmness, your care and letting a total stranger be randomly inserted in your trip/family photos… THANKYOU for the rescue and for being so amazing. An act of kindness goes a long way and I will never forget it.
To the experience itself — I will be back again soon… more prepared and ready to tackle this river all over again!!!

Amazing day on the water with Spencer! this was my first time doing the RoGD, and now I see what all the fuss is about!. Having been part of the business since he was a child, Spencer is extremely knowledgeable and ensured that we all had a fun day. Highly recommend Spencer and Backroads!

Had a great time and all the staff were friendly and accommodating to our 1 year old. We got the canoe for ease with a toddler. It’s a beautiful location and very peaceful with an amazing view of the mountains. We were the first rental of the season and because of that they said we would get a free rental the next time we wanted to visit. As we’re tourists, we wouldn’t be returning any time soon so they gave us this rental for free!!

We had a lot of fun, despite the low water level; but that's not the organizer's fault. The staff were very helpful and friendly. After a short briefing, we set off. The river, the landscape and nature are very beautiful and peaceful. We had to overcome 8 or 9 beaver dams, which is not easy in a canoe. To do this, we had to get out of the canoe and pull it over the dams. Even when I fell into the water once, our good mood was not dampened. You should be physically fit for this activity, because the canoes or kayaks have to be lifted out of the water from time to time and pulled a little with the roller board. At the end, they also have to be lifted out of the water and carried about 50m. Lifting them out at low water is difficult, so people shouldn't have any back problems or anything like that.
For us, it was a great experience, which was fun even when it was raining. We highly recommend it!

Glad you enjoyed the end of season conditions and let the adventure of the River of Golden Dreams be a highlight. It's true, later in the season the trip becomes more active. This makes for a more authentic Canadian experience ;) Glad you had fun and we hope to see you again soon!

Our group of 2 adults and a 12 yo and 8yo had to abort 1/3 of the way through our trip (of course, with no refund) as the canoe was too hard to manoeuvre against the current and through the reeds and bends. We could tell that the rest of the trip would be more of a trial than a fun holiday trip so decided to call it quits whilst we could.
Whilst a test of our teamwork and physical strength, we feel we could have been better advised and put into a double kayak (for our 8yo) and two single kayaks, given how hard the canoe was to manage vs the kayak, which we are used to using. I am a slight 5ft nothing and my husband a normal 5ft 10 so perhaps this made it trickier.
So be cautious and question / judge yourself carefully rather than expecting that staff will advise you appropriately.

We were a little anxious about this trip as we had not kayaked for years!
But we did not need to worry, we had the most enjoyable time. The guys from Backroad were really kind and helpful….fully explained to us what we should expect and helped us in and out of the water.
We had perfect weather, the scenery was beautiful and the water level was just right for our ability.
You do have to get out of the boat a couple of times to get over the beaver dams but it’s not difficult, just causes lots of laughs!
Would highly recommend, definitely take your water shoes!
Thank you again guys….
