This "expert tour" is false advertising. The "tour-guides" were pleasant and obliging but entirely lacked any significant knowledge (let alone "expert commentary and analysis" as advertised) - certainly no more than can be acquired by 5 minutes on wikipedia and a trip to the little Wordsworth museum and local signage. The tour also didn't cover the advertised sites. This was to have been the highlight of our holiday in England; it was instead a shocking waste of money and time and a mockery of the term "expert". Other positive reviews can only have been by people who know nothing of Wordsworth/Romantics and didnt have a car to get to the location. It should have been advertised as "a friendly superficial chat and mini-van access to Rydalmere and sites readily accessible by the public". My father and I know Wordsworth's work and life well and were looking forward to this tour as a highlight and culmination of our many tours in England and Spain these last 3 weeks. We invested $AU695 for the 4 family members but learnt absolutely nothing and didnt see much of what was advertised. We should be refunded in full. We'd checked out of our hotel 4 hours early and yet couldn't all participate due to the poor organisation by the company.
30minutes beforehand we phoned to advise that we'd been held up and would be arriving 4 minutes late. On the phone we were told that there would be no parking without an app that is not accessible to non-British residents. This held us all up substantially and should have been clearly stated on the tour information so that we could have cancelled. Why was this railway station chosen as the pick-up point if customers cannot park there? And why is this not advised beforehand? Not being able to park there meant that only 2 of our party to joined the van while we drove behind. My father who went in the van was to have informed us of their ‘expert commentary’ but even my mother who knows little about the topic said she’d learnt nothing worthwhile to tell us; that they’d spent as much time discussing where the customers were from as they did providing any depth of insight into the region or the Romantics. Mostly what was mentioned (several times) was that the area “hadn’t changed much since Wordsworth’s time”, as if that wasn’t already apparent. They also mentioned the size of Lake Windemere and 2 smaller lakes where he’d fished for pyke.
The ‘tour’ parked and ended at Rydalmere. With no commentary of any value having been provided on their drive there, why didn’t the tour start at Rydalmere? We saw the graveyard and heard a brief note on 3 family (and a close family friend) buried there; an explanation of why the Daffodil Garden wasn’t the famous ‘daffodil field’; and a note that his sister had influenced and contributed to his work. The church we’d been looking forward to, was closed. Where was the 2nd church mentioned on the itinerary and all of the other sites listed? Then we were handed over to the museum staff and shown an 8 minute video providing no real insight. Then we were left alone to look at Dove Cottage and garden – at least a real location of interest but took only 15minutes to see and was open to the public and with no additional guidance by “our guides”? Then we were given 45 minutes to look around the little museum, gift shop and café… Really?
This was all a shocking disappointment and compete waste of money. We could easily and more conveniently travelled to Rydalmere/Dove cottage ourselves and read the signage and a pamphlet. It should have been stated that this tour is design for those that don’t have a car, know nothing and are not interested in learning about his work but just want to see a couple of sites, that some of the key sites wont be open, and that it can all be accessed without the tour. As an expert tour this is a sham.
Its definitely worth a visit to Dove Cottage. Do this on your own. Allow 30mins at best.

Dear Jaqueline T
We were astonished to discover your 1 Star review for our Wordsworth morning half day tour.
I need to point out to readers of this review that you were not on a private tour and that there were other guests present, for whom you showed no regard whatsoever. Our drivers and guides are experienced professionals and made sure that the other guests would not be affected by your behaviour or demands. Our guides were successful in this because our Japanese guests also left us a review of exactly the same tour which has been translated from Japanese to English by Google Translate:
“Deep literary experience by Worsworth experts
Two people, a driver and a conductor, guided a small number of travelers. The detailed explanation made me feel closer to Wordsworth. Conductor's literary knowledge was extensive and his answers to questions were excellent. We responded flexibly to our interests and requests.”
This is a completely different account of the tour from yours.
Your review is a complete about-face account from what your husband said, on more than one occasion, during the tour and emphatically when you all left mid-tour. He thanked our driver Sandra and guide Gillian for being so helpful and patient given the circumstances, commenting that the tour had been “great” and “interesting” and that it had been a very positive experience. He also apologised repeatedly for your group of four guests being so late, disruptive and demanding which caused everyone on the tour to be impacted by your own disorganised and thoughtless actions.
Our driver and guide were also told by your husband that you were leaving mid-tour not because of anything related to the tour or our staff but that you had just realised that you had to get your hire car back to London, on a Friday afternoon, by 5pm. This surprised Sandra and Gillian as you had obviously not planned properly or realistically the time that the tour takes and the time needed for you to return the vehicle at 5pm. I suspect that these circumstances may have been an unsuccessful ambition and has contributed to your bad-tempered, inaccurate account of the Wordsworth tour for which we are not in any way to blame.
It is striking that your account in this review is not the same as that of your husband on the day.
You have used some strong words and made some serious allegations which has the potential to have an impact upon our reputation and future business. This cannot go unchallenged. We encourage our guests to leave reviews and many do. They are valuable both as a guide to how we are doing as a provider of tours, but also as an insight as to what our tours are like from people who have experienced them. If anyone reading this reply would like to see our reviews, have a look at the rest of our 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor, Viator, Google, Airbnb and elsewhere to see what people say. However, reviews are only of any value when they are true, honest, unbiased and accurate. Your review is none of these.
I have taken some time to investigate the circumstances of this tour. I have had separate conversations with the driver, guide and the on-duty manager who took your phone call. I have also checked the audio logs in the van. From this, I have to say that your comments and accusations are wildly inaccurate and any disappointment about the tour are entirely of your own making. We will not be accused of providing the type of tour that you claim in your review. The problems you are accusing us of are entirely due to your own actions, for which you seem to be reluctant to admit. We cannot accept your attempt to make us a scapegoat and totally refute your dangerously liable comments. Your comments and accusations are so serious that I am not going to waste any time with platitudes or apologies. We have nothing to apologise but perhaps you need to take a leaf out of your husband’s book.
I will now address each of your comments from our perspective:
1. “This "expert tour" is false advertising. The "tour-guides" were pleasant and obliging but entirely lacked any significant knowledge (let alone "expert commentary and analysis" as advertised) - certainly no more than can be acquired by 5 minutes on wikipedia and a trip to the little Wordsworth museum and local signage.”
To say that something is “false advertising” is very serious and requires detailed evidence which you have failed to supply in your review.
You haven’t defined “significant knowledge” relative to your own knowledge. Our guides regularly take tours with guests being academics, university lecturers, students and very well read, knowledgeable enthusiasts who require a deep and sophisticated understanding of the subjects being discussed from the guide. We have only ever had positive and enthusiastic responses. What “significant knowledge” were you looking for? None of you asked any relevant questions, made comments or wanted to discuss Wordsworth, his family, friends, life, poetry or the area he lived in. Our guides are extremely good but they aren’t mind readers, you have to engage and respond to them.
Our guides are also very well educated and experienced in their own fields of expertise, continuing to enhance their knowledge during the quieter periods of the year by using the facilities of our company library of over 6,500 books and online academic databases and journals at university level research. This is very far from 5 minutes research on Wikipedia as the comments made by our Japanese guests, quoted above, prove.
The Wordsworth Museum is far from little and is a world class centre for research which you obviously did not recognise. Given your inability to get yourselves from A-B successfully and on-time, I doubt that local signage would have helped you either.
2. “The tour also didn't cover the advertised sites.”
The tour covered all of the relevant sights and the tour stayed as long as possible despite the delays you caused by being late and your mother having difficulties boarding and exiting the vehicle etc. The other advertised sites were visited on the way to and at Rydal, after you had left the tour to take your car back to London. You were not there and so cannot comment on what sites were visited or not.
3. “This was to have been the highlight of our holiday in England; it was instead a shocking waste of money and time and a mockery of the term "expert".”
If this was to be your holiday highlight, I am astonished that you did not take more care or effort to find out more about what would be involved. If it is so important, most people contact us to find out more, ask questions and get advice. You did not. Had you done so however, we would have known about your mother’s disabilities and difficulties, particularly with walking. Our advice would have been to take a private tour with no other people on the van but your group. This would have been better for you and been more flexible for the timing and pace of the tour. It would also not have the potential to impact on other travellers. We could also have advised you about the intellectual content of the tour, which appears to be so important to you, and also whether the tour would be suitable for you generally. We do not always book everyone who enquires onto the tours if we feel it is not appropriate for them or they would not enjoy them. We do this to try to help potential guests to get the best experience that they can, not always with us, and prevent what has obviously happened here, a poor review.
Had we been contacted in advance we could have advised you about parking your vehicle before the departure time for the tour. Practically everyone who comes on our tours for whom it is a special occasion or lifelong ambition, are eager for the tour to start and are waiting at the departure point well ahead of time having got advice and made appropriate preparations to go. You were very late, you did not find out in advance where to park, you didn’t tell us that your mother has difficulty walking which would slow everything down, you didn’t even make sure that you had enough time to complete the tour and then get to London for 5pm on a busy Friday in August. This is not what people do when “the highlight of our holiday in England” is involved; they are much more conscious and careful.
If you feel that the tour was a shocking waste of money, it is certainly not down to anything that our company is responsible for. As for a waste of time, well that was entirely down to you.
I have explained earlier, we have guests who are experts themselves on our tours and they are quite happy with the content and level of expertise.
4. “Other positive reviews can only have been by people who know nothing of Wordsworth/Romantics and didnt have a car to get to the location. It should have been advertised as "a friendly superficial chat and mini-van access to Rydalmere and sites readily accessible by the public".”
This really does show you up as not having the depth of knowledge about Wordsworth as you would like to think. The sarcasm is poor and there is no such place as “Rydalmere”. We have Rydal Water, Rydal Mount or Rydal Hall but no Rydalmere. Perhaps you should acquire “significant knowledge” by spending “5 minutes on wikipedia and a trip to the little Wordsworth museum”.
It is also obvious that the “sites readily accessible by the public".” If they were not, how would anyone ever get in? Where did you think that you were going on a 4-hour tour, somewhere hidden and only open to you?
5. “The ‘tour’ parked and ended at Rydalmere. The church we’d been looking forward to, was closed.and were looking forward to this tour as a highlight and culmination of our many tours in England and Spain these last 3 weeks.”
You were very good at disguising your claimed knowledge of Wordsworth, in fact you were not with the guide most of the time so I don’t know how you could comment one way or the other. No sooner did we get to Grasmere, than you were off with your mother to the toilet and took so long, everyone was waiting for you when it was time to go to Wordsworth Grasmere!
As for your father, he didn’t engage with the guide, asked no questions, showed no interest and when spoken to by the guide, answered in monosyllables gazing into the middle distance. He certainly disguised his knowledge and interest very well.
If the tour was such a highlight, you should have done some proper research about parking cars and the walking distances involved by people who are disabled and can barely walk. You should have had the courtesy to contact us and tell us about your mother’s condition in advance and we would have been able to help alleviate the situation. It would also have been polite and helpful of you to be organised by not arriving extremely late. We have guests who go on out tours as lifetime ambitions fulfilled. They make sure that from their end, nothing can go wrong and they are early and in the right location for their much-anticipated tour. They don’t just blasé up late with a person in the group who, in the words of your husband “with the best will in the world, we are slow”, given no thought about where to park a vehicle and potentially disrupt other guests with demands about all sorts of things at the last minute.
6. “We invested $AU695 for the 4 family members but learnt absolutely nothing and didnt see much of what was advertised. We should be refunded in full.”
If you learned absolutely nothing, then that is down to you, not us. None of your group were engaging with the guide and if you wanted to learn more you should have spoken up and asked questions, the guide would have gone into much greater depth, she is more than capable of doing so.
This is an example of a group who went on a Bronte tour with the same guide a few days after you went on a Wordsworth tour. This is the review they left:
“Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Gillian and Tim were so kind and informative. She was so knowledgeable about the lives and works of the Brontës, really bringing them to life for us! Despite the damp weather (welcome to the Lake District), overcast skies could not dampen their enthusiasm for the subject matter. Every stop we were regaled with stories of inspirations for the novels, life during the period, details of their lives/loves… It’s clear that a lot of time and effort has been been put into researching the subject matter so we can enjoy such an informative and entertaining excursion!”
Review left on Viator August 2024
The person who left this Bronte review is very well educated in English Literature and has written several books about people in his country so is a good test of our guide's knowledge. He actually spent 5 hours at Wordsworth Grasmere when he visited.
The same care and attention is taken for all of our tours, no matter the subject. If you wanted to learn more, you should have said so on the day, the Bronte people did.
You didn’t see much because you were constantly attending to the demands and needs of your mother and were not with the guide. When the guide took you around Wordsworth Grasmere before the Dove Cottage tour, you paid no attention, didn’t go to anywhere they suggested and went drinking tea in the café after which your husband told the driver that you had to get your car back to London and abruptly left the tour.
I would be interested to hear an explanation for giving you a refund in full when the alleged shortcomings you have claimed are all of your own creation, particularly as you left the tour less than half way through. I think that this is the crux of the matter and you are looking for a scapegoat to blame and get a refund. I cannot see any justification for doing so.
7. “We'd checked out of our hotel 4 hours early and yet couldn't all participate due to the poor organisation by the company.”
Our driver and guide were told by yourself, that you had spent the night in Keswick which is about half an hour up the road from your pick-up point in Windermere. I don’t know how this could have taken four hours as a journey, or perhaps you went to other places on the way to Windermere but that doesn’t excuse you for being very late for the tour. The poor organisation was entirely yours as the other guests and the driver and guide were on-time waiting for you to arrive.
When you eventually did get there, you had not given any thought whatsoever about parking, the tour was already very late, your mother and father were put in the van, after the Japanese guests had very kindly moved seats to allow them easier access to get in and out of the vehicle, for which you never even bothered to thank them, and at your own suggestion you followed the van in your own vehicle to avoid having to take up even more time finding somewhere to park.
Do not try to pass the blame in any way onto our company. The poor organisation was entirely yours.
8. “30minutes beforehand we phoned to advise that we'd been held up and would be arriving 4 minutes late. On the phone we were told that there would be no parking without an app that is not accessible to non-British residents. This held us all up substantially and should have been clearly stated on the tour information so that we could have cancelled.”
I have checked our phone logs and spoken to the duty manager who took your call. It was 5 minutes before you were due to depart on the tour that you contacted us. This was already late as it states clearly on the booking confirmation that you should be at the pick-up point at least 10 minutes before the departure time. You were much later than 4 minutes when you eventually did arrive. You were so late that our driver and guide would have been justified in departing without you as we have an obligation to our other guests who were on time and waiting for you. We also have to depart on time because there are usually timed departure times for boats and timed tickets for entry to the attractions as was the case on this particular tour with timed entry tickets booked into Wordsworth Grasmere.
When we take bookings, we don’t know how the guests involved will be travelling. That is their business and responsibility. We are not responsible for how you get to the departure point; it is up to individuals who are booked on the tour to get to the right place at the right time. If anyone feels that they may need more help, thy call well in advance and are therefore organised on the day.
We are not responsible for the parking conditions, apps or any other pre-tour parking for anyone booked onto any of our tours. If asked, we explain the situation but we are not responsible for the parking vehicles anywhere. That is for the driver of the car to take responsibility for and to sort out.
You were able to cancel the tour up to 24 hours before but this would never have been relevant if you had arrived in time to park your car in an appropriate place with plenty of time to join the tour at the right time.
9. “Why was this railway station chosen as the pick-up point if customers cannot park there? And why is this not advised beforehand? Not being able to park there meant that only 2 of our party to joined the van while we drove behind.”
The railway station has been a pick-up point for our guests for many years and has never been a problem. It is a hub for both the trains and the buses which is how some guests arrive. It is also a recognisable place and easy to get to on foot or by taxi. Right next to the train station is a Booths supermarket where guests can use the toilet, buy water for the tour and enjoy something to eat in the café before or after a tour. Not everyone arrives by car, late, disorganised and unfairly expecting other people to sort out the problems that they have created themselves.
Only two of your party were in the van because you were late, would have wasted even more time of the tour trying to park and you suggested that it was preferable to follow in your own car. None of these things are our making or our responsibility.
10. “My father who went in the van was to have informed us of their ‘expert commentary’ but even my mother who knows little about the topic said she’d learnt nothing worthwhile to tell us; that they’d spent as much time discussing where the customers were from as they did providing any depth of insight into the region or the Romantics. Mostly what was mentioned (several times) was that the area “hadn’t changed much since Wordsworth’s time”, as if that wasn’t already apparent. They also mentioned the size of Lake Windemere and 2 smaller lakes where he’d fished for pyke.”
I am afraid that your father and mother were either not listening, did not hear properly, were asleep or did not understand what was being said. A useful feature of our vans is that they have dashcam footage and audio. This is used as a precautionary and safety measure for our employees and vehicles. However, it also comes in handy when we occasionally have to check something, as I have done in this case. I can clearly hear everything that the guide said. The commentary was as I would have expected for the start of a tour with ice-breakers to make everyone at ease and encourage conversation and questions, it was relevant, well executed, covered everything appropriate for the distance and time it took to get to Grasmere, pointing out all of the places and landscape features on the way and telling good, concise life stories about the Wordsworths, their family, friends, the things they did and wrote. In fact, it was very good. I can also hear our Japanese guests, who, despite English not being their first language, asked quite a few very good questions which the guide answered in full and had conversations with them relating to the Lake district in general and Wordsworth related topics. Your father said he was from Australia, had been to a wedding in Spain and then said nothing else for the entire journey. Your mother said nothing at all. So, I am afraid that your father has informed you incorrectly.
The tour didn’t go anywhere called “Rydalmere” because that doesn’t exist. As both you and your father know so much about Wordsworth, the Romantics and everything else it seems, I am surprised that you don’t know this very basic fact.
From the evidence of the audio recording of the excellent commentary in the van, I am sure that the guide did as much of a thorough tour in Grasmere as she could, given the delays that you had created. St Oswald’s church being closed was out of our control and we didn’t specifically ask the churchwarden to lock it so that you couldn’t go in. I don’t know why it was closed; it is usually open at that time but on that day it wasn’t. We are not responsible for that.
12. “Where was the 2nd church mentioned on the itinerary and all of the other sites listed?”
These were all where we expected them to be. You did not see them because you left the tour before the guide and driver had an opportunity to tell you anything relevant about them. Our Japanese guests had a very extensive and enjoyable tour around them with the guide on a lovely sunny morning.
13. “Then we were handed over to the museum staff and shown an 8 minute video providing no real insight. Then we were left alone to look at Dove Cottage and garden – at least a real location of interest but took only 15minutes to see and was open to the public and with no additional guidance by “our guides”? Then we were given 45 minutes to look around the little museum, gift shop and café… Really?”
Now this is where you really do show yourself up. The comments about Wordsworth Grasmere are, frankly, ridiculous and far better educated and enthusiastic, knowledgeable, real academic experts and just passing visitors would agree entirely with me. If you were genuinely interested in Wordsworth and knew something, any small thing, about him, you would never write anything so dismissive about a world-class centre of education which holds a priceless collection of almost every aspect of his writing and life, along with the other Romantic poets. Your attitude and comments are deeply offensive and have absolutely no relevance to reality at all.
Did you really think that you were so important that you, and you alone, would go anywhere that wasn’t open to the public. What exactly were you expecting, behind the scenes privileged access? We could arrange that but it would cost an awful lot more and if I’m honest, not appropriate for your level of knowledge given your comments in this review.
14. This was all a shocking disappointment and compete waste of money. We could easily and more conveniently travelled to Rydalmere/Dove cottage ourselves and read the signage and a pamphlet.”
I don’t know what you expected and I am genuinely sorry that you feel you are disappointed but your expectations appear to be totally unrealistic. It states clearly on the tour description what is involved, you should have read it more carefully before booking and is you required more information, contacted us in advance. All of our other guests who have been on this and our other tours seem to have an excellent time as is shown by their reviews. As I said earlier, not everyone is suitable for our tours and I would agree that you were not and should have travelled independently, although how you would have found “Rydalmere” I do not know.
15. “It should have been stated that this tour is design for those that don’t have a car, know nothing and are not interested in learning about his work but just want to see a couple of sites, that some of the key sites wont be open, and that it can all be accessed without the tour. As an expert tour this is a sham.”
You have made some very unfair comments here that are totally untrue and stated that the tour “is a sham”. This is a very serious and inflammatory statement which you cannot justify in any way. Please have the decency to stand up and take responsibility for your own failings and poor management instead of trying, very badly, to put the blame on us and try to get a refund for a good tour which you destroyed yourselves.
Our guides and drivers work really hard, are very well qualified, professional and experienced. They do not deserve the type of derisory comments you have made about them or our company. You obviously have a very high opinion of yourself, of which none of us here share, particularly those who had the misfortune to meet you. You are rude, selfish, petulant and cannot get yourselves organised to do a simple thing like arriving on time for a tour and understanding the content.
If you wrote this review expecting a grovelling apology for your bad-tempered rant, brought on entirely by your own incompetence, then as you can see, you were wrong.
If we ever do anything less than to our usual excellent standard, we would willingly apologise and if appropriate refund but not when we get a complete pack of lies as a review, aimed to damage our staff, reputation and business.
We don’t deserve any of this and you should be ashamed of yourself for writing such untrue, unfair, biased lies. It is obvious to anyone reading your review what sort of guest you were and that you have completely embarrassed yourself by writing it.

Gillian and Sandra were excellent on our tour today. They were both passionate, knowledgeable and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning and felt inspired as we visited all of the major Wordsworth sites. I would definitely recommend English Lake Tours if you are in the area.

One of the best parts of our tour was not necessarily the tour itself (which really was fantastic!) was that these two old friends really played off each other so well while Gill was giving us historical, interesting bits of information. They've known each other for many, many years and the sweet friendship is so evident between them.
The tour was so lovely - lots of great info, explained in a thoughtful, unassuming way. I had studied Wordsworth in the Lake District 27 years ago through a study abroad, so our guide was excited for me to rediscover and remember little "spots of time"- which I did!
Being somewhat introverted, my partner and I so appreciated being able to go at a somewhat slow pace and ask questions as we had them, instead of getting too much info all at once.
Highly recommend!

We went there today. Love the garden.and house. Nice to learn about his life. And see were he lived . Like the house. The garden was my favourite as I am a gardener.

We were so impressed by the depth of knowledge of our guide (Tim). He was obviously interested in the topic and had spent much time in research. We fitted in a great deal in half a day, but it did not feel rushed. Even if one knows very little about Wordsworth and his fellow poets, one could not fail to enjoy this tour in one of England's most beautiful tourist areas.

So interesting. and who wouldn`t want to look at where Willam Wordsworth lived and worked some of the time. And how he had so many Poets stay with him, the history, the Poetry. Windermere, a lovely area, The whole Lake District amazing, and would love to visit again. .

This year is the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworth's birth, so there are going to be many celebrations here in the Lakes. It is really interesting to visit his homes and learn about his life. We are pleased that you enjoyed your time with us.

This is an enchanting place to visit even if you are not necessarily interested in Wordsworth. It is one of those places which captures the imagination and draws you into the life and history of the place. Inside the house is fascinating but a walk around the gardens is just sublime. I particularly enjoyed the small walled garden with the greenhouse in it. My rose tinted ideal of what a garden should be and feel like. The whole place still has that lived at home feel.
