In one word - Brilliant!
Matt my guide was knowledgeable, friendly and I came away from the tour with a completely different view of the penal system, both historical and current and, importantly, the tour was fun!
I have no hesitation in recommending a tour of Shrewsbury prison to anyone and I'm sure they will have as good an experience that I had!
Thank you Matt and also a big thanks to the rest of the team that I met.

Highly recommended tour

Really interesting and insightful tour. The guide was really engaging and funny. Plus Graham had around 40 years experience of being a prison officer so it was great to get that insider knowledge and how prison has changed over the years. Well worth doing the guided tour as you can then wander around at your leisure afterwards. A great way to spend an afternoon.

Shrewsbury Prison guided tour

A really informative and enjoyable tour. Matt was a very likable guy, who told us his stories in a very engaging and interesting manner. We were really happy to be able to take the dog along and the gift shop was well stocked as well as the cafe being available to avoid the rain when we arrived early.

We had a great visit. Matt our guide was very informative & made our visit very interesting. It was a very good insight into a prison & opened your eyes to what went on.
We have been going to Shrewsbury for over 20 years & never knew there was a prison in the town.
Would definitely recommend a visit.

Ghost hunting tour

I was really looking forward to looking around the prison as I’ve lived in the area for a while. I attended the Wednesday night ghost tour at 6:30pm.
It was great to look around the place and hear tales of past sightings but sad to learn about some of the grim things that took place. I’m really interested in the paranormal and was keen to see if I could pick up on any of the claimed ghosts, said to haunt there. Unfortunately I didn’t feel anything other than cold as a lot of windows in the cells were open, that’s fine though as you’re not guaranteed to see anything, so no complaints there.
You get time to wander off on your own and sit in a cell with the door shut if you want to, which was good. The guide was knowledgeable and had lots of information to share.

The thing I didn’t appreciate was the “jump scares”, this spoilt it for me sadly as I felt it cheapened the experience and made me doubt if I could then trust the information given in regards to alleged sightings.

One thing that I was really annoyed about was a bunch of women who arrived late, noisy and smelling of alcohol. We had to wait for them before the tour would start, so our experience was cut short by 15 minutes, which when you’ve paid £25 for 1.5 hours, is not ok.

Good afternoon 673freyjak, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are very appreciative to receive all feedback, as we aim to use these for training purposes for the future. Whilst it is exciting to host a Ghost Tour within a Haunted Prison, we can never guarantee that any sightings will occur on the night, however there is always a possibility that they may. The Jump-scare that takes place is a part of the experience, however, it is not a reflection of the information we deliver, as all information delivered on the tour has been thoroughly researched in advance. As such, we would not lie about any sightings. In The future, if you would consider returning for more, we have plenty more opportunities for you to explore, perhaps one of our Escape Rooms, conducting your very own Self-Guided Tour, or perhaps exploring our Standard Guided Tours in the full daylight. Enjoyable tour and definitely worth going to.

We did find this place very hard to find. We enjoyed the guided tour and looking round. Almost embarrassed to admit we found the execution area the most fascinating and then the yard with the stocks. It was all very interesting and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. The only reason I have given it 4 stars not 5 stars is that the guide did talk rather too much. What he said was interesting but a lot of it went over the head of my youngest grandson aged 13. We became cold (despite very warm clothes) and desperate to sit down.

However my 13 year old grandson is really keen to come back and do a prison break out!

I have to add that admin staff were wonderful because I paid in advance online and had to cancel twice due to mitigating circumstances. We were allowed to move our trip forward twice and I really appreciate that.

My Husband bought tickets for this tour, and it was an eye-opening experience listening to our guide Michael talk about life behind bars at the Dana. I would recommend the tour, and I would advise people to wrap up warm too.

Good afternoon, Thank you for leaving us such a positive review, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your Guided Tour of our prison. It offers the perfect opportunity to get a real insight into prisoner life along with having the chance to explore the prison at your own leisure following your tour. The prison does tend to get chilly during the winter months, wrapping up warm is always advised! For if you are planning of visiting us again, perhaps you could give one of our escape rooms a go? The work involved will certainly keep you warm!

Real frank and funny tour excellent!

Had a brilliant tour of the Dana by the knowlegable and funny Graham. Dispite it being freezing in the prison (wrap up folks) I enjoyed every minute. Having a retired prison officer give the tour, gave a real inside look at prison life. Being able to spend as much time looking around and taking pictures ect after the guide. Thanks for a lovely morning Graham and all the staff at shrewbury prison. Mrs V Kilborn
