This is the second time we have taken this particular tour, once in 2019 and again in 2022 and the 4th tour with Irish Rail. All I can say is that these tours are very well run, the guides are excellent and adaptable to the groups needs and everything runs like clockwork. So much more enjoyable and much more comfortable than a similar bus tour. First class all the way!

My granddaughter, 18 years old, and I took this tour back in June. Our tour guide was Ian and he did a great job. I booked this tour before I wrenched my knee running through the airport in Paris. I probably should’ve backed out, but really wanted my granddaughter to see the area as our family immigrated from around Waterford to the United States. Even with a bad knee and using a cane I did manage the tour. If walking is hard for you this may be a little too difficult, everybody else seems to do fine with the walking amounts. The castle was amazing and the area interesting. Walking around Waterford and hearing the history of the town and connections to the Vikings was very interesting. The crystal factory and the tour is always a hit. The train ride was scenic and comfortable. I very much recommend this tout

When planning a trip to Ireland with my grandma, who has limited mobility, we were happy to see that the tour was wheelchair accessible other than transfers to and from a bus (which ended up being nonexistent). Unfortunately, this is not what we experienced and we ended up having to separate from the group and do the Waterford factor tour on our own (with the tour company refusing to give us a refund). We were not allowed to sit in the wheelchair section of the train car and the guide seemed surprised when the wheelchair did not fit down the very narrow aisles. When the guide started to go over the plan for the day, he said that he'd need to order a taxi for us (at our expense) in Kilkenny because he was concerned about us being able to walk to and from the train station. Things were much better when we separated from the group and moved to the accessible car on the train and the railroad employees themselves were fantastic. If you have accessibility concerns, do not trust the company's description and get in touch with them first to ensure your needs will be met!

For my family’s once-in-a-lifetime trip to Ireland, I booked, paid and received confirmation for this tour. The day before the tour date, I received a text confirmation with my tickets. I woke my family up at 5:30am to catch a taxi to the train station. When we checked in for the tour at the train station at 6:40am we were told the tour had been cancelled. WE RECEIVED NO NOTICE OF CANCELLATION! We were devastated and lost valuable time trying to find and make alternate plans. We were finally able on our own to take the train to Waterford and get tickets there for the factory tour, but sadly we will never see Kilkenny. Had we received a cancellation notice we would have been able to do both on our own. Do not use Railtours Ireland! You will regret it. You can take a train and see these places on your own. I do not normally write reviews but feel obligated to warn others about this awful company. They took my money, sent me tickets, and then cancelled with NO NOTICE!

Great tour! Kilkenny is a beautiful “tidy town.” Beautiful flowers, clean streets, lots of shops, and good food. Could spend a few days there exploring. The tour of Waterford was great! Very informative with plenty of time to watch the entire process from molten glass to finished product. Also a good amount of time to spend admiring all the pieces in the showroom and shopping. Paddy was an excellent guide! He spent time with everyone in the group, was very informative, and funny! Great tour!

First time to travel solo since no one was free on my vacation time, so figured… What am I waiting for! This tour was truly spectacular! Our guide, Paddy Mc. was so wonderful… he honestly took care of everyone on the tour making sure everyone was comfortable and answered all questions. Just a great, kind man! We had a lovely visit in Kilkenny. We could visit the castle snd explore or spend more time across the street at the Design and Art building . Also a very nice coffee shop for those who wanted to sit awhile. The train ride was beautiful and relaxing just watching the green countryside pass by. We stopped for lunch before going to to Waterford. So interesting… loved every minute of this tour and never felt like I was traveling solo. I met some wonderful new friends, families and couples! This tour is for everyone.

This tour was our favorite of all we went on while in Dublin. Our tour guide, Paddy, made it the best experience. He was witty and kind and gave us great information along the way. Paddy stayed with the group the whole time and told us stories along the way. Having him with us made the tour that much more special.

Planned about 8 months in advance, arrived in Dublin days early just for this excursion and was notified 12 hours beforehand that it was cancelled. Extremely disappointed.

Is the time in Waterford only spent in the crystal factory or is there time left for a bit of wandering about the town?

There is some time to wander around the town. The time included a lunch at a pub as well. The tour of the crystal factory is optional. I actually did not find much to see around the town. My wife likes clothing shops and we did some shopping and she bought some clothing.

We got back to Dublin a little after 8:00pm … about on schedule. This was even though, we had to take a bus from Waterford to Limerick Junction because the train had broken down for that leg of the return journey.

Hello Robert B., The schedule, albeit generous, didn't allow us to deviate from the planned trip very much. But please don't mistake that we felt rushed during the tour through the various cities. Ample time was allowed, but an additional stop to Thomastown would have been difficult, if not impossible. My recommendation is to contact Ireland Rail Tours directly and determine if they would be open to a customized tour schedule that would include Thomastown. Our trave group was small, only a group of 8, plus our tour guide, Liam, which made it pleasant, personal and most enjoyable.

We are cruising & arrive in Dublin on a Sat morning (in Aug) @ 5 am. We depart @ 5:30 pm. How far is Waterford Crystal from our ship dock? What is the best/fastest mode of transportation to visit there? Thank you.
