From the moment we were picked up by our driver and tour guide, Mark D., we were well taken care of. It was apparent at every stage of the tour that our safety, comfort and enjoyment was of paramount importance to Mark. He answered all our questions, offered local insight and remained cheerful and personable, even laughing at my jokes. The pace of the tour was just right. Mark often would check in and give us choices for things like breaks for food and restrooms. The itinerary was a nice blend of natural beautiful sights and local history. Cliffs, castles, waterfalls, local walking tours, sheep herding demonstration with border collies, biking the Aran Islands (choose the e-bike, you will thank me), ferry rides, shopping, and great food were all part of our 10 day tour. My wife has bad knees, so some of the walking requirements pushed her to the limit, in some cases, she would stop part way. There are some physical demands, but that is the nature of the geography and how one gets to the best sights. The mid sized Mercedes coach was well equipped and comfortable. Many of the roads are windy, undulating and bumpy, but our driver was a pro. He kept his headset on to give updates on what we were seeing and to answer questions. The accommodations ranged from modern and spacious to cosy and quirky. Breakfast was excellent at each stop. You should find choices to suit your appetite. You will not leave hungry. Lunch stops ranged from quaint cafes with home baked scones and Espresso to carriageway service stops with multiple fast food choices. Come suppertime, Mark would post half a dozen pub and restaurant choices on the group WhatsApp chat. Also a great way for us to share photos with the group and confirm times for leaving, meeting, etc. This trip was well worth the time and reasonable cost. Beautiful island and gracious people. Highly recommended.

My wife and I took a ten-day small group tour of Ireland with Overland in the second half of September 2022. If you’re considering such an extended excursion, we highly recommend Overland and our tour guide Mark and we're providing an extensive review so you can see why.

My wife has taken an interest in her newly-identified Irish heritage and had a work meeting in Belfast at the end of September, so decided to spend time in Ireland beforehand. We’re usually independent and make our own tours but we were both too busy. Overland had a ten-day small group tour of Ireland that ended just before her Belfast meeting, and had a few reviews here that were good. So we booked the Overland tour to avoid the time and hassle of planning ten days’ worth of places to see and stay in an unfamiliar country. Turned out to be an excellent decision.

Overland's website was easy to navigate and book our tour. Overland was responsive to our email inquiries, and made recommendations for accommodations and sight-seeing in Dublin even though our tour did not include Dublin as anything more than a starting and ending point. (We arrived in Dublin a few days before the Overland tour and did some touring of the city on our own using an initial Big Bus hop-on hop-off tour, tripadvisor.com, our legs, iphone and the local city buses (consider a Leap card).)

Our tour began in Dublin, where our tour guide Mark, his 15 person van, and us twelve tourists met for the first time. Our luggage got loaded in the back of the van, and we all took seats for our tour that would generally circle the outer edges of the island traveling counterclockwise. One tip: pick a satisfactory seat on the van from the outset because you will likely remain in that seat for the rest of the trip.

Overland is based in Galway, and so our tour tended to spend more time on the western coast of Ireland rather than Dublin or Belfast, which turned out fine for us. As was the weather. I tried to pack for wet, miserable fall weather, but the weather was predominantly nice, with only an occasional short sprinkle. Our final day did involve soaking rain for the drive back to Dublin, but that didn’t affect us much other than cutting short the stop for the Rock of Cashel.

Since we had no particular expectations about the tour, everything was interesting and new to us. Some places were closed for various reasons, like the Tomb of Newgrange, and the Carrick-a-Rede Road Bridge (which we saw from a distance but could not cross), but there was so much other stuff that was interesting, I only missed these things when I went back to write this review and saw the actual itinerary.

A review of my photos shows over ten days we saw the cities of Belfast and Derry/Londonderry, and the towns of Donegal, Galway, Dingle, and Kinsale—all of them interesting with people, public art and historical features our tour explored. Overland provided local tour guides to show some of these places, and the local guides were all excellent and both informative and entertaining.

Places we saw in no particular order included the Titanic centre, a black cab tour in Belfast (explaining the history of troubles in Northern Ireland), Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, the Grianan of Aileach, the Dark Hedges (a setting for some Game of Thrones filming), Ballycastle Harbour and its local park (with delicious Morelli Italian Ice Cream nearby), Glengesh Pass, Sliabh Liag View Walk, Ben Bulben, Kylemore Abbey, the largest Aran Island and its wormhole (which needs a new name for the oddly rectangular space filled with seawater), Eask Tower, the Cliffs of Mohar (from the top and from the sea), Poulnabrone Tomb, An Fear Gorta Tea Room, Blarney Castle, Blarney Woolen Mills (no pricing advantage there), and the Rock of Cashel.

Activities included listening to Irish music in pubs with fellow travelers and Mark, a sheep-herding demonstration, feeding adolescent lambs who really, really wanted the contents of bottles we held, hiking and climbing steep hills to obtain great views, bicycling on Inishmore and in Killarney National Park, kayaking in the north Atlantic out of Dingle with Irish Adventures, playing a game of snooker in AbbyGlen Castle, and enjoying a bit of falconry. Being able to be active was much better for us than just sitting around or standing all day and the various activities made for an excellent vacation. Less adventuresome travelers spent time in town sightseeing, people-watching and shopping. And we all saw mile after mile of Ireland’s greenery, low stone fences and sheep.

For the record, the accommodations each night were fine and clean. We stayed one night at the optional AbbyGlen Castle, which was a castle on the outside but completely modern inside, with a (really large) snooker table. The most troublesome part of the tour was having to pack each day to move again the next day. Staying two days in Dingle was a joy.

The small group concept worked well for our Overland group tour. Over the ten-day trip we travelers got to know each other during the driving, dinners and down times, and by the end I think most came to feel like we were an extended family where everybody’s opinion mattered and we all looked out for each other to make sure nobody in our group got lost or left behind. I think the dynamics would be much different and less friendly for a large bus tour, and our small group could and did make stops at places that could not have accommodated a large tour group. Mark made sure that our travel times were broken up in manageable sections so we never felt rushed, and so our small and unhurried group facilitated interesting conversations (you could tell your stories to new people who were not bored from having heard them many times before). Hopefully you will discover on your own tours that your fellow small group travelers also have interesting stories, wisdom and unexpected talents they will reveal along the way.

We enjoyed all these places and activities on our tour, but were reminded again and again of the importance of having an excellent tour guide—and driver. As soon as you leave the main highways between major cities, Ireland’s roads become very narrow and winding, with numerous blind curves and oncoming vehicles that appeared suddenly and went by fast without much of a margin for error. Yikes! To our relief, Mark was a careful driver who navigated our mid-sized van expertly past oncoming buses, farm equipment, and stray sheep along the road. We felt safe in Mark’s care and could sight-see, converse or nod off on the drives without concern about the numerous road hazards being constantly managed by Mark. Priceless. Mark broke our drives up into manageable sections with interesting side trips not on the original itinerary, so our travel was not wearying and we saw more of Ireland (and more sheep). On a side note, midway through the tour our van developed a minor engine leak that impacted its climbing power, but Mark made adjustments and managed the issue without any impaired safety or adversely impacting our sightseeing.

Mark also excelled in the other main service of tour guide. Ireland has some impressive landscapes and lots of history that continues to affect the present, but ultimately, for us, a tour is about how an unfamiliar people lived and have adapted to their environment to become the people living there today. (And what kind of food do they enjoy—and do we like it, too?) Castles don’t converse; and land and sea look remarkably similar in most places and don’t communicate significance on their own. Rather, the heart of a place, including Ireland, is found in its people, who differentiate their place on earth from others, and our tour guide Mark was a first-rate ambassador for the Irish people.

We found Mark to be a good guy, capable, personable, and interested in everyone’s welfare. After a long day’s drive, he ate with us and hung out with us, answering our questions, talking about his country, and shared his stories, as did we. When you are traveling in a small, new group, the group dynamics depend heavily on the group leader, and Mark managed that duty deftly without being overbearing, and showed we could be open about issues and address them in an adult manner that was refreshingly different from much social media. Mark knew a lot about Ireland and our destinations, but was still learning, and so was also interested in the tour destinations and history related by our local guides, which gave us more stuff to talk about with a fellow traveler and Irishman. Mark engaged with us and discussed his country and himself frankly when asked and enabled us to converse meaningfully with an Irishman about a wide range of topics without offense. As a result, we developed a group sense of us different adults journeying together through Ireland and also through life, trying to deal with our respective challenges while enjoying the journey, and that sense of camaraderie with Mark showing us around his country—not some ancient ruin—was the real highlight of our tour.

This review is long-winded, but for good reason. Mark made our ten-day tour of Ireland much more interesting and enjoyable than we were expecting (with our fellow traveling companions contributing for sure) and we want to make certain there is a clear public record of his excellent service for us as a tour guide, driver and traveling companion for the island of Ireland.

Well done, Overland Ireland, for organizing our tour and for placing Mark in charge of our small tour group.

How lucky were we to choose Overland Ireland for our Ireland Tour? We saw everything that was scheduled and so many other BONUS stops. The tour exceeded my expectations!!!

Our Utlimate 10-day tour was with a group of eight - five of those doing the 7 day tour. We started in Kinsale and ended in Belfast. Our tour guide, Mark was BEYOND OUTSTANDING. He truly has the patience of a saint!!

I wouldn't hesitate to book any of the tours that Overland Ireland offers. Their guides are extremely informative, making the tour much more personable. I wholeheartedly recommend Overland Ireland for your next Ireland tour.

Gillian, a chara!! (friend in Irish!!) Thank you SO much for your review and kind words. This is what makes it worth it for us at Overland. Mark is a gem in himself, a gent and a scholar if you will. We would absolutely love to welcome you back to Ireland in the near future. Thank you again and take care

When booking our first trip to Ireland, we were on the fence of whether or not we would try to do it ourselves or book a tour. We opted to do a small group tour and came across Overland Ireland, and I am so glad we did. Upon looking at all the different types of tours, we decided to do the 10 day Ultimate Tour. I really wanted the opportunity to see the entire country, including the northwest portion of the republic as well as Northern Ireland.

Our experience on tour was great. There were originally only 3 of us in the group who were doing the Ultimate 10 day tour, so we were placed with people who were doing the 7 day. Because of this, our tour went in reverse (started in Kinsale, ended in Northern Ireland) rather than how the tour was originally supposed to go (start in the North, end in Kinsale). It wasn’t that big of a deal, we didn’t know any different. However, I think if I had a choice, I would have rather done it the way it was originally supposed to start. The reason why? The North has a lot of history. I knew of this history but I wasn’t aware of the complexity behind the history of the troubles in the north. We learned and saw a lot through the Black Cab Taxi tour, which was excellent. The tour was so eye opening and informative. I just feel like I would have liked to end my tour on a high note, in the republic. Instead I was left with this heavy feeling from this country’s history that is still very prevalent even today.

Another reason why (not major but something to keep in mind if your tour is in reverse), is that Northern Ireland obviously uses pound sterling and not euro. We wanted to make sure our tour guide received a tip at the end of our trip. When the tour ended and it was time to get dropped off in Dublin, you don’t stop anywhere in the republic after leaving Northern Ireland. That being said, make sure if you want to tip your guide, you have enough euro before leaving the republic of Ireland before you go into the north so you don’t make your guide stop at a random ATM on the way back into Dublin like we did. :D

That being said, I can’t say enough good things for our guide, Finn. He was simply incredible. He was informative, kind, and a really good driver! Seriously! Idk how he guides that van around those small windy roads of Ireland. I was so nervous about getting car sick… I had my Dramamine on me at all times, but I never needed it. But really, Finn’s knowledge of the country was outstanding. You can tell how much he loves his country and its rich history. Every county we were in, every town we stayed at, every corner we turned, he has a story or a history lesson behind it. Like… I don’t know where in his brain he stores all this knowledge. He was personable and took the time to talk to everyone and got to know us. It wasn’t just a job for him, you can tell he really enjoyed doing what he does. I feel like we really lucked out by having Finn as our guide. Honestly, it’s hard to not enjoy a trip to Ireland, but I think it was Finn that really made our tour special.

Back to the trip itself…
I knew the tour was going to be busy, and it was. If you’re looking for a relaxing and low key vacation, this is not the tour for you. But that’s the only way you’re able to see so much in such a short time. You only stay 1 night in each town (two nights in Dingle) and you’re up and out early each morning. The time spent on the road and in the van isn’t terrible It’s usually broken up with stops for lunch or a coffee break so it’s really not bad. Finn always knew of great little stops along the way to stop for lunch or coffee or a little treat that you would never know about if you were self-guiding. Those types of things are invaluable.

The places we stayed varied from B&Bs to small boutique hotels to larger hotels. They were all good. Some were naturally better than others, but nothing was bad by any stretch of the imagination. Something that kinda annoyed me during the trip was I paid Overland an extra $100 to “guarantee a king or queen sized bed” since they said sometimes the beds in Ireland are smaller? However when I stayed at these places and talked to others on the tour, no one else paid the extra money and everyone stayed in a queen or king sized bed. So I feel like I kinda got dooped out of $100.

We had breakfast at the accommodations every morning. Lunch was usually while we were out and about sight-seeing. Dinner reservations were sometimes made for us depending on the day or we were left to have dinner on our own (I think 5 of the 9 days we got to do dinner by ourselves). On the days where we had lunch or dinner on our own, Finn would always provide us with a nice long list of recommendations. That being said, if you’re someone who likes to be on your own and do your own thing, this might not be the best for you. We usually ate breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner as a group. I for one am not a morning person, and usually like to eat quietly and by myself which wasn’t a thing on tour but overall it wasn’t horrible.

I really liked the physical side of tour. Meaning, it was a lot of walking, hiking, biking, etc. This was particularly great after being in the van getting to the next location. Finn was able to adjust based off how physically involved you were willing to get. Because of this, I feel like I got to see things that most tours wouldn’t be able to see (ie- the wormhole on the Aran Islands). I was really excited to kayak in Dingle. Unfortunately, the kayak company canceled due to staffing shortages. I am sure we paid for it with our package, but definitely did not get refunded for anything. Oh well.

Ladies, If you’re unsure of how to pack for a trip like this (like I was) I’ll tell you all the must haves:
A pair of broken in sneakers
A pair of waterproof shoes like hiking shoes or boots (this was key).
A pair of (broken in) tennis shoes (not a necessity but if you don’t want to wear sneakers or hiking boots out to dinner).
Yoga pants/workout clothes. Like a lot of them. I only brought 3 pair yoga pants and had so many regrets I didn’t pack more. Workout tops, sports bras, etc.
Like 1 pair of jeans. Comfy jeans (for going out in).
A couple of nice sweaters/tops. Like 3 or 4.
Layers! T shirts, Long Sleeves, a couple of hoodie-like sweatshirts/sweaters.
I packed a waterproof rain jacket and a packable but warmer jacket.
Don’t bother packing curling irons, jewelry, etc. You won’t have much time for getting too dolled up haha.

I wish leading up to the tour, I had a little more communication with Overland. I booked the tour, got an email with a bunch of packets (which was nice) and then I didn’t hear much from them. I tried to email them a couple of times in the beginning and didn’t hear back. I actually had to text them on the WhatsApp to get an answer. They also charged my card when I booked, then refunded it, then recharged my card a month before the trip. They said that the original charge “never went through”, even though it did on my end. They also never emailed me to let me know that they had to do the refund and recharge which would have been a nice courtesy. We were also only notified a few days ahead of the tour that our tour would be in reverse and that we were also unable to do the rope bridge in Northern Ireland (bummer :( ). The day before we were supposed to fly out I also got an email with a completely different meet up location than the original. I tried, once again, to email them about this to confirm but got an automated email back from Leah saying she was out of office. I ended up having to email someone else in the company who was able to get back to me who stated that email got sent out in error. It certainly did not help my anxiety leading up to the trip.

Overall, I 100000% recommend my time and experience I had with Overland Ireland. It was well planned and executed. Once we were with Finn, a lot of my anxiety leading into the trip went away and I knew we were going to be taken care of. Can’t thank him enough!

Another tour company informed us weeks before arrival that they missed our booking had no room for us. Fortunately Overland Ireland 10-day small group tour still had room for us. We did not know what to expect. Would we like the people on the small tour? will we have a tour guide that can engage us for 10days?
To summarize, we had the best 10 days travelling and finished wanting more. The group was diverse and we found new friends by the end. Our guide, Finn, made us feel, as a small group, that the tour was tailored to our wants and needs. He knew how to adjust the day to find us sunshine when we exited the vehicle on rainy days. Finn told stories that brought each place to life. This was a trip my spouse wanted to do and I was apprehensive. By the end of the tour I was loving the Irish culture and its uniqueness.
Would I recommend this tour?
Yes.
Thank you Finn and Overland tours. You created memories and experiences I will cherish and share.

Having just completed the 10 day ultimate tour with Overland Ireland, I feel the need to let others know about the truly exceptional experience that it was and that I accredit most of this to our amazing tour guide Finn.
Finn is passionate about his job and it truly shows. He is intelligent, extremely knowledgeable and well versed. He has an ease about him as he guides you through this cultural tour recounting accent history, folklore, and current events. So Much knowledge and true passion for his country shows through.
Finn was fun and funny in a true Irish manor, always willing to share a great story or wee bit of knowledge. He had the ability to connect with each and every person on some level on our 15 person tour.
The tour hit all of the hot spots with some off the beaten path spots thrown in.
Tailoring our tour on a daily basis depending on weather, crowds and feedback form our group was refreshing. Feeling the need to stick to a timeframe but not a stringent schedule made this trip most enjoyable. Finn also had truly great suggestions for restaurants, pubs, and music. We had so many wonderful meals, topnotch food, and excellent live music experiences throughout our trip.
Accommodations were excellent at every stop. Some of the highlights were the Black Cab Tour in Belfast, bike riding on Inis Mor, and kayaking in Dingle Bay! All were amazing experiences!
I can not say enough about Finn and how grateful and lucky I feel to have had him as our tour guide. This is a tour not to be missed.
My heart is full. Thank you Ireland! Thank you Finn!
Go raibh míle maith agat!

We are delighted that you enjoyed your experiences, you bia (food) and the company (arguably one of the most important aspect of our group tours). Thank you again and have a wonderful week - maybe we can have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Emerald Isle on another one of our tours! I will be sure to share your praise with Finn - I am sure he will be thrilled!

Our guide Finn was extraordinary!!! In no particular order: he had a vast range of knowledge, enjoyable to be around, witty sense of humor, advised us on how to make the most of our stops (like Blarney Castle), told us interesting bits of culture and history as he drove, drove safely on roads that we non-Irish found quite scary, recommended restaurants, worked in a few extra stops because our group was very good at returning to the van on time. It was our first tour ever, and I pity all the other guides in our future travel because they will be compared to him, and he set the bar incredibly high!

WHY NO FIVE STARS? We paid the extra $300 for a one-night stay at a castle, and it was a complete waste of money! One couple with a castle stay was dropped off at a lovely place with beautiful grounds to walk and gardens. Yet we and another couple were dropped off at Abbeyglen Castle. With steep woods on three sides, the castle’s narrow lawn/grounds had no walking paths or gardens - just the view of a helicopter fuel tank, two aging helicopter landing pads, a tennis court, and a patio with a fountain that wasn’t working and hadn’t been cleaned in a very long time. Our room on the backside of the castle was okay - like a nice hotel room anywhere - bed, tv, two chairs, small table and the view was just the wall of overgrowth on steep hill, but nothing castle about it. Yet, the other couple staying at Abbeyglen had claw foot bathtub, a four-poster bed, a separate seating area with a peat-burning fireplace, and a sliding glass door leading to their private patio on the top of the castle turret with a view of the disappointing grounds.

We were not told that the only dining option was 110€ for two - not including drinks, plus the 20+% markup because it was a historic place. The food was good, but certainly not worth the price.

We arrived as the sun was setting. I felt bad that the rest of the group had to ride around in the van for almost an hour until the three couples were delivered to the two different places before the rest of the group could get to their hotel and have dinner. They also had to get up extra early so there was time to pick up the three couples before the day’s touring could start.

And if Abbeyglen is going to fly country flags, they should be in good condition- not ripped into ratty strips by the weather. It’s disrespectful.

I will say the van was quite comfortable, clean and big windows for good views. Really appreciated the USB ports by the window seats. The van did break down (wouldn’t start) when we got to it after a day exploring Inishmore/Aran Islands. We were quite startled that the van didn’t have its own set of jumper cables.

Thanks a million for your wonderful review and feedback. Apologies that your castle stay did not live up to your expectations, for most guests its a highlight so will investigate what happened there. Happy future travels

This tour was above and beyond our expectations! This trip was postponed twice due to Covid lock downs. It was well worth the wait. Our guide, Mark, is so knowledgeable and kept us entertained with his Irish wit. The tours have a max of 15 people, we had 12. It’s so much easier to get around with a smaller group. There is an itinerary but is quite flexible when weather changes. There is flexibility if you decide to just go out on your own versus cycling or kayaking. The accommodations were nice and it was so great to not have to worry about where to stay. My husband got to enjoy the scenery instead of driving and just being able to relax and enjoy the ride. The shuttle van is roomy and has storage space in the rear. Don’t think you could get away with planning this trip at a lower cost versus using Overland. There is no price tag on fun, relaxation and laughing for 10 days straight! We were truly blessed to have Mark as our guide. Thank you Overland Team and we will see you again

Our Ultimate Ireland 10-Day Tour was guided by Finn. This is a good tour that let's you see most of Ireland. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in seeing and learning about Ireland. While this tour does hit most of the tourist hot spots it does a very good job or immersing you in the culture of Ireland and teaching you about the history as well. The one part of this trip that made it great and 5 star worthy was without a doubt our tour guide Finn. He goes above and beyond at every step of the tour. Putting his efforts into words would require a 3-4 page paper at minimum. It is truly hard to state how much effort he puts into making sure everyone on the tour is having a great time and making sure you get the most out of your time in Ireland. Overall this was a great tour and I would do it again and recommend it to anyone interested in visiting Ireland.
