Great introduction to the history, culture, scenery and food of the Languedoc, using the Cathar castles as a focus and starting off point. Perfect combination of hiking, history, food, accomodations, free time for shoppping and wandering. James was so informative and entertaining at the same time. There were various dietary requireents in our small group and he was able to accomodate all of us without anyone missing out on local specialities. The countryside was beautiful, and we we also enjoyed the walking tours of Toulouse, a wonderful city. I've got some amazing pictures and memories!

James Macdonald’s talks were totally enthralling and inspirational.
The only time he ever referred to notes was when he wanted to quote directly from a contemporary work or troubadour translation. He was never fazed by questions.
He related the facts based on historical records and allowed us to come to our own conclusions. His talks were never dry; they were exhilarating. Hours passed like minutes.
Add to that the beautiful countryside, the evocative castles, the fabulous food and wine of the region, and two wonderful evenings spent with James and Sophie at their own Chateau St Ferriol.
Special mentions also, to our driver Alison, who accompanied us throughout. She was always on hand to assist if necessary and was happy to share her knowledge of the region with us. And last, but not least, my fellow travellers. Small groups are always interesting and ours in May 2019 was no exception.
Altogether, an amazing experience, that I can’t recommend highly enough.
In fact I’m tempted to book again for this year, if they ever let us out of the country again!
