The train and comfortable, the guide, Sebastian was on time at the meeting point, very friendly and personable. English speaking and understandable.

We were on the fence on taking this tour because it was a full day, but we are so glad we did. We got to visit old medieval villages that we never imagined we'd get to experience. So grateful for the professionalism and kindness shared by our tour guide as well. Very knowledgeable and took time to answer all our questions. Highly recommend!!!

We got this fantastic tour with very knowledgable and nice guy his name was Sebastien. We saw beautiful old villages and very nice nature through Alps mountains with train and we really enjoyed this tour and recommended to everyone gets this amazing tour.

This was a great day trip!!! Well worth the money! There is a lot of walking if you are not use to it or able body it might not be for you- climbing on inclines as well- however if you are able this is well worth the views of the mountains- the towns you stop in- the places in the town you can go- Our guide Carmela was excellent- easy to get along with very personable- shared a lot of history - able to take us inside some of the churches and the monastery- Carmela was super nice and talkative- she definitely made this day trip that much more enjoyable! Tip- if you are trying to decide between the picnic lunch or the restaurant- go with the restaurant it’s excellent!! Thanks for a memorable day and for making it so awesome!!!

The tour leads you through the French Alps and stopped by two towns with some hiking in the neighborhoods. The physical activities are moderate, but can be challenging if you are not able to walk for a couple of miles. I would suggest to skip the monastery visit (additional cost) which does not have much to see. The tour guide had tried her best to provide information, but somehow did not seem well prepared to give the area backgrounds. The tour lasted for about 12 hours (!) but can be cut shorter.

So well worth the day trip from Nice by train. Incredible views along the way to the French alps and a nice peaceful break from the city. Our guide, Sebastien, articulated the region’s history very well, took us to a delicious lunch and nice walk in the old village of Tende, on to an ancient monastery in Saorge by bus, and back to Nice by train. Sebastien is high-energy, always explaining something in detail, never a dull moment with him, and made the entire tour a fascinating 5-star experience.

.your enjoyment of this trip will be determined by the weather.the day we travelled it rained virtually all day and my wife did not enjoy it
The picnic option was a cheese and ham roll,a bottle of water and a piece of apple pie..the problem was due to the wind and rain we had no where to eat it and took shelter behind a statue
Sebastian the tour guide was enthusiastic and helped the day go by and was extremely helpful but at the end of the day we came away disappointed and felt it was not worth the £125 fee per person

The trip itself was pretty, and the train ride was a nice break in between all the walking. The sites are neat and something we wouldn't have seen if we stayed in Nice.
However, our tour guide was disorganized, anxious, and rushed us through everything. We were told not to have bathroom breaks and rushed through the streets with little time to take pictures. He was also mad that some of the group waited for him and the rest of the group before entering the museum and monastery as we didn't have a lot of time, he said. Although, while in these establishments, we had more than enough time to see everything. We felt rushed and anxious the entire tour.
Other than being made to feel rushed, the tour was good. I'm sure with a different guide it would be more enjoyable.
Please remember to pack warm clothes and good shoes. The weather can be a lot different in the Alps, and there is plenty of walking to do.

At one point in the description it said a very good physical condition is required. That is not me nor the 3 who will be accompanying me. Is this only for an optional side trip?

I had also had some concerns when i read that but it ended up being a non-issue. The guide, Samuel, kept a very easy pace. The second stop we went to was a bit of a hike away from the train station but our guide, Samuel, had already arranged to have a shuttle to take those that didn’t want to walk there.
Both towns had cobblestone streets that take you up into the different parts of the town but if you weren’t up for the entire walk I would imagine you could find a nice shady place and just enjoy the scenery and fresh air. I never felt rushed so if you needed a moment to catch your breath it would be fine. Our group was a mix with teenagers to seniors and the other in between ages.
As long as you enjoy walking in general then it is 100% worth it.

Is it possible to do this trip from a cruise ship that stops at the port in nice. The stop is 7am-7pm?

From our experience this would be difficult. We left at 8:00am and return at 7:00pm. However, if you ask the tour company, I think you could shorten your time in the villages to return earlier. The trains run fairly frequent. You can see the medieval villages in less time than is allocated for the tour.
