I felt compelled to write a review about my experience in this tour. Gaetano is an incredible guide, full of wit and humour and fascinating facts about the city. It was two hours and a half of non-stop information which I was constantly intrigued by. His knowledge is diverse and we covered quite a lot, from the Unesco Water collecting system, life in the caves, influence of Hollywood and so on.
I just wish I can find a Gaetano-like guide in every city I go to! :)

We were impressed by the depth of both the historical and the technical knowledge that was presented on the tour. Even though we had walked around ourselves to see the sights, it all made much more impact once we understood the context we were given. Really liked the passionate interest our guide had toward informing us. Well worth it!

Eine tolle Führung mit unglaublich vielen Hintergrundinformationen zu dieser sehr,sehr beeindruckenden Stadt Matera.
Gaetano spricht sehr gut englisch und hat uns mit seiner sympathischen Ausstrahlung sofort für diese Stadt begeistern können. Wir haben gespürt, wie sehr Ihm dieser geschichtsträchtige Ort am Herzen liegt.

Great Experience in Matera! Domenico was the most passionate and interesting guide. He took us back in history as we walked the old Sassi districts. This was a great way to understand this beautiful area at the start of our stay. Thank you for accommodating us at the last minute!

Gaetano brought the past to life with his stories, many of which were from people who had lived in the caves. I absolutely loved this tour, highly recommended - a must do if you visit Matera.

Kan inte annat än att rekommendera en guidad tur i denna fascinerande stad! Det här bolaget hade fina recensioner och deras guider är säkert väldigt bra generellt. Tyvärr hade vi otur. Vår guide var oerhört engagerad och villig att berätta, men innehållet var okunnigt, fullt av upprepanden och helt nyansfattigt.

We had the wonderful Gaetano and he was just an AMAZING tour guide who went above and beyond. So much great history that we will never find on Google. So blessed to have booked this last minute because the Sassi is an absolute labyrinth to the visitor and you need someone who knows the place well to make sense of the real history of this amazing place and how it came to be what it is today. So don’t think that you can just do this on your own, trust me, Gaetano is your man! Grazias Mille Tano xx

Gaetano was a FANTASTIC guide. He told many stories from his first-hand visits with people who lived in the caves in Matera in the 1950's. The man does his homework and genuinely loves Matera, its history and its future.
In addition to an in-depth tour of the older caves, we ran into a movie set and heard some stories about the movies that have been filmed in Matera. One person on our tour had some scholarly questions about the Messipica people, which Gaetano handled with equal scholarship.
Plus, Gaetano was funny and warm and helped us to love Matera and be interested in its future as well. The place is changing monthly as more hotels and restaurants are built. There are laws that will preserve the character of the place, but it's special to see it before everything is developed. Matera is relatively new to tourism. You can still imagine what it was like when habitated by shepherds and their families, then abandoned for 40 years.

Buongiorno, il tour si svolge tutto all'aperto, quando l'ho fatto io non c'erano cani. Ma non mi risulta ci fossero restrizioni al riguardo.
We are four adults interested in this tour in September. In the 2-3 hours does the tour group enter any of the churches or houses or other places of interest? If so, are there additional fees? What is the total distance walked in during the tour?

Nicely paced tour, not a hike! Of course there is lots of up and down and stairs, this is Matera after all, but it's a gentle walk with lots of stops. There were no extra charges. We did look inside old cave dwellings. I highly recommend this tour.
