Great history to be seen here. You do have to spend the time to walk through most doorways, etc, as you never know where you might come across an old wall painting, etc. Uneven ground and hilly so be prepared for lots of walking. The day we visited was a public holiday so there were long iines of people. Not sure what it is like on a normal day.

Na Pompei de moeite waard, minder groot maar wel meer bewaard gebleven. Na een rondleiding in Pompei weet je waar je naar kijkt. Deze stad was welvarend. Er is een klein museumpje met gevonden voorwerpen zoals gebruiksvoorwerpen en sieraden. Verbazingwekkend is dat een aantal gebruiksvoorwerpen nog steeds bestaan anno 2023!

This place is amazing!
Our ticket included the audioguide which was a good way to find out about the ruins. We spend about 2.5 hours investigation the ruins. Since my last visit they've removed the walkways in front of the boat sheds which was a little disappointing. Covid requirements meant we had to queue to enter a few of the houses but it wasn't a long wait.
These ruins are so much better preserved than Pompeii.

Herculaneum is Pompeii’s much smaller neighbour- but no worse for that. Frozen in time since the volcanic eruption of AD79, which buried the town in ash, it is amazing being able to walk down Roman streets and to wander into villas, bath houses ,shops etc . Most of the buildings are in a remarkable state of preservation., with mosaic floors and painted frescoes on the walls .You really feel that you have travelled back in time. In some of the houses you actually walk around upon the ancient mosaics which are around 2000 years old .
It’s a 10 minute walk to the Archaeological Park entrance from the railway station, which is on the Naples to Sorrento line. One matter to note - one you enter the Archaeological Park there is nowhere to buy a drink - since you can easily spend several hours exploring the site you may well want to take one in with you . Be aware also that many of the artifacts found in the buildings during excavation are now housed in the Naples Archaeological Museum (MANN) a place which is also well worth a visit.

We visited Pompeii a few days ago and decided to visit Herculaneum as the reviews were that it was smaller and better preserved. It is interesting and good if you only have a few hours to kill. Definitely need an audio guide, due to lack of information. It’s easy reach from the station, straight down the Main Street. It’s not a patch on Pompeii. I wish there was a bigger museum of artefacts on-site and virtual interpretations. Many areas were closed off.

Goodness me, this place is incredible! It took my breath away. The detail and preservation of this site is nothing short of amazing. Very intimate compared to pompeii. Great detailed headset guides which take you round the ruins. My only criticism is they are missing a trick on food and drink at this place at the end. Don't hesitate to come here you won't regret it.

Family of mixed ages - 9 peopleages 7 -70, all had a wonderful experience. Travelled by train from Naples which was easy and locals were very helpful.

Herculaneum is, like Pompeii, best visited by train and using an audio guide. Look for Ercolano Scavi station on the line between Sorrento and Naples. Leave the station and follow Via 4 Novembre for about 5 minutes down to an archway entrance to the ruins. Note. On the left as you pass through the arch is a desk offering "Maps of Herculaneum " for non specified donations. These are street maps of the town, free anywhere, and this is a scam. Ignore it and go on down the hill to the reception centre. Here you can pay entrance, obtain audioguides and so on.
The town is in a superbly preserved state, with even charred woodwork remaining. It extends under the new town back up the hill where much is yet to be explored and discovered. You can see most of it in an afternoon, marvel at the bath houses, villas and if you are like me, feel for the pitiful skeletons lying in the archways where they desperately sought shelter and prayed for boats near what was once the thriving quayside.
A memorable visit and not to be missed.

After stumbling on the street of the ruins after a mad drive to escape Napoli, and a wonderful lunch, we found first Sunday free entry at herculaneum. We should have downloaded some info first but didn't detract from the experience of feeling a town buried under 20 metres of volcano.

So much has been said already, that I will only leave advice here. No need to buy advance tickets, no need to pay for a map. Scan the QR code after the turnstiles and you'll get a pdf guide.
It'll be 3.5 hours at a moderate pace, food you can get immediately outside the site. Museum is very small and maybe only 5 minutes needed but don't miss it as they display a lot of ancient roman jewelry. There's a second smaller museum that displays an excavated boat.
Overall I definitely enjoyed it and it was what I expected it to be.
