Tour brought to life by an extremely knowledgeable and entertaining guide, Marco. Made sure we saw the most important artefacts and artworks, demonstrated extensive and in depth knowledge of his subject and was a great story teller.

Maria did a great job of leading us through the area and pointing out highlights within a solid historical context! It was crowded but she made it an enjoyable experience for both my wife and me!

Cannot recommend Tommaso highly enough, especially if you have any history lovers in your group. We had a private skip-the-line tour (3 adults) for both Vatican and Colosseum tours on consecutive days (3 hours each). Tommaso is a professor of archeology and he truly made the city come alive. Two of our group read The Agony and the Ecstasy to prepare for our Italy trip and what we heard on the tour only added to it - neither a repeat nor a contradiction. He knew SO much and answered our (at times admittedly in-depth/nerdy) questions with enthusiasm. Advantage of a private tour is you can pause if needed or skip sections if desired, and while all the large groups looked miserable listening to headphones and herded around like cattle, we had a great time! Skip the line is a must unless you want to wait in the heat for hours to go into a hot museum. (Take water with you, it’s hot inside too.)

Our tour was absolutely fantastic. Marco is high-energy, engaging and knowledgable.
QUICK TIPS:
1) bring lots of water because there is only one opportunity to buy water right before the tour begins; you are moving fast and it gets quite hot.
2) wear comfortable shoes
3) be sure to have your shoulders and knees covered for the St. Peter's Basilica and
4) Get the earliest tour available.
To start, it was just the three of us, my husband, myself and our guide, Marco.
He greeted us with a sign with our name on it which was hugely helpful because the meeting location is CRAZY busy. By using the private tour, we skipped the VERY long line for the regular tours.
Marco pointed out unique details during the tour that were new to us. My husband is a huge history, religion and mythology student and Marco was able to surprise him; which as anyone who loves history can tell you, is a true gem.
The tour moves fast; not Marco's fault, security forces visitors through by constantly telling you to "keep moving."
There isn't much time to hang out and just look around. Having Marco point out the key details made up for the lack of "cruising around" time. We completed the three tours in three hours.
In our opinion, the cost (Euro 500+) seemed high, but was totally worth every penny when you see the value Marco brings as well as the ability to skip lines. We tipped Marco Euro 40 but I don't think it's expected like we might assume in the US.
QUICK TIPS:

Paola was a great tour guide and gave me and my wife a private tour of the Vatican and Sistine Chapel over three hours. She was incredibly knowledgeable as she has a degree in archaeology. She also gave us great instructions at the end for a self-tour of St. Peter’s Basilica.

This was our first trip to Rome. It won’t be our last though! We can’t recommend this tour highly enough. Our guide, Alexandra (sp?☺️) was TERRIFIC!!!! She really knew how to give us the best experience. She was also wonderful at making sure my husband was able to do the tour successfully (he has CF). Most importantly, she was very knowledgeable and enhanced our visit. Five stars all the way!

with the new covid restrictions and being unable to enter st peter's from the vatican museum will we have skip the line access to st peters after the tour ends?

I honestly don't know. My kids were pretty tired after the vatican museum tour and there was a pretty long line for St Peter's and it was raining so we didn't really explore whether we'd have to wait in that line or not - we were kinda done! Sorry. Ask the tour operator directly.

This is our first full day in Rome. I'd like to do the afternoon tour because we'll be coming from the Eastern US and so the 9am tour will be 3am. I've heard that this gets much more crowded in the afternoon, so is it worth it to get up at 2am, or should we give ourselves an adjustment day and do the afternoon tour?

You will enjoy the tour more if you are rested and refreshed. Make sure you have been fed and hydrated. The walk is leisurely but can be exhausting if you are not prepared.

Saint Peter's square is inside a gated area of the Vatican. If the person your meeting is already inside ( has paid entrance fee.) Then yes you can meet them there. Be specific of your meeting point example: near the bathroom, or near the bottom of stairs.
When you get dropped off ask your driver to drop you at the museum entrance, and meet your person there. There are stairs where the tour guides meet their groups. Good luck. If you have time after your tour, take a taxi to the top of the Vittorio Emanvele Memorial, there is an elevator in the back of building which you can ride for 10 euros, well worth the view of all of rome.

My family is a party of 10 which includes three children ages 17,12, and 6. Your system will not allow me to add more than 9 tickets to purchase. We all want to be on the same tour.

CityWonders com offers: Complete Vatican Museums tour with Sistine Chapel, Bramante Staircase & St. Peter's Basilica - up to 20 in the group and your 3 children are acceptable in age. It's a bit pricey and is an over 4 hour tour. They may have other options on the same site.

My family numbers 7 adults and three children age 17, 12, and 6. your system will not allow me to add more than 9. Is there a method to get the ticket number to 10? We do all want to be on the same tour.

There is no option to add a child under the age of 5. Is there any issue with the child attending the tour due to age?

I think the tour might be rather too long for a five-year-old. It is also unlikely that a child of that age would get anything out of it. There are such large crowds that the chances of losing the child even briefly are high. On our tour, we lost an adult for about 30 minutes; far easier to lose a child in those circumstances.
