Thank you for an amazing trip Paulo

Firstly, Paulo, our tour guide was absolutely fantastic and really made the experience special. He was very polite and extremely knowledgeable. The boat was nice, new and comfortable. The supplied binoculars were a good brand and worked very well. We were actually out for closer to 1hr20mins. Would recommend and we would do it again when visiting Portugal again

Exceeded expectations - very entertaining

The time flew by in a flash! 2 hours was actually too short. Our tour guide Pedro, a 24-year-old student from the area, led us, a diverse group of 10 people, on the comfortable boat (leather-upholstered couch benches). 1 hour 30 minutes before high tide we left the small harbor under the railway bridge. In the lagoon we had very calm seas and hardly any wind. The boat lay quietly on the water, you could stand there all the time except for the acceleration phases, take photos and look through the binoculars. Incidentally, they lend you optics on the boat for free, specifically Bushnell 8x42, compact and solid, good imaging performance. Although Pedro initially claimed that he was not a specialist himself, he found and identified all of the following species with certainty. After about 3 km of stop-and-go driving west to a former oyster farm, we stayed for about 20 minutes to observe terns, whimbrels and ospreys. Then we went back to the harbor. In total we found: + 3 ospreys + 2 marsh harriers + at least 15 whimbrels + 2 curlews + 4 flamingos + 2 flocks of spoonbills (6+ ~40) + 2 grey herons + at least 10 little egrets + at least 5 cattle egrets + 4 great egrets + cormorants + terns + countless other small waders (plovers, sanderlings...).

I went on the boat tour with no expectations and came back with some great observations. I can definitely recommend the tour. Thank you, Pedro!

A must for birdwatchers

For the bird watching enthusiast, I really recommend doing Formosamar's bird watching boat trip on a low tide and when the migratory birds are there. They were just starting to arrive in this area (September) when we did our boat trip with Fernando.
He was excellent! So much knowledge of birds and their behaviour. He was very interesting and enthusiastic about birds and the area and willing and able to answer questions. Also, I have a hearing loss and wear hearing aids. These do not give me normal hearing though. I found Fernando's voice clear and audible.
Unfortunately, we were in Faro during some of the highest tides of the year which resulted in less birds being seen. However, I was surprised how many species that Fernando found for us.
For birdwatchers, I also recommend the Faro foreshore and pier area there for birds, on a low tide.
Thank you Formosamar for this experience at one of the world's Ramsar-listed sites, Ria Formosa. for migratory shorebirds. We live in Australia near a Ramsar site and it was fascinating here seeing the birds, the wetlands and the changing tides.

An unforgettable and magical experience.

We would absolutely recommend the two hour tour with Farmosamar with a guide who clearly knew so much about the area of the Lagoon and importantly for us, was very knowledgeable about the bird life that we saw so much of. It was great to learn more about this very special landscape and we had some particular highlights as far as bird 'spots' were concerned. We were so lucky to see a Great White Egret, a rare sight apparently, as well as an Osprey, Flamingo, Spoonbills and many more, As the tour ended, the sun was just setting, adding beautiful colours to the sky.

Beautiful tour with knowledgeable guide

The guide was very knowledgeable, the sunset views were incredible, and we saw lots of birds throughout the tour.

There was care taken not to disturb the birds, and having a small group felt great.

Every good Tern deserves another

Our bird watching was top notch. Paulo was a skilled and very knowledgeable guide. We went to find Flamingos and Paulo found those and Little Egrets, Osprey, Whimbrels, Spoonbills, Grey Heron, Sandwich Term, Cormorants and others. Loved all of the things we learned about high and low tides, lagoons, salt pans and pontoon boats. Thank you Paulo for making our outing so successful. Leslee and Bryan

Unforgettable introduction to Ria Formosa

A brilliant experience. Paulo our guide provided a great introduction to the Ria Formosa natural park, it’s history and how it provides a home for oyster beds as well as birds. We saw a great range of birds including a wonderful view of an Osprey as well as flamingos, white storks, sandwich terns, whimbrils,, spoonbills, grey heron, little egrets, greater black gulls, marsh harriers…….an unforgettable and relaxing experience.

Not a good tour for birders

The tour was scheduled during high tide, when there were almost no birds. If the company really cared, they would only schedule the birdwatching tours during prime bird hours. The guide spent most of the time talking about everything except birds, and rarely spotted birds. The guests seemed to know more about the birds, and be better at spotting birds than the guide. The tour might be enjoyable for those who have never gone birdwatching before, but would be a complete disappointment for any level of birder. It was obvious that the tour was called a birdwatching tour to draw tourists, more of a money making mission than anything else. The tour ended up being a crappier boat tour of Ria Formosa with a couple birds if you're lucky.

High tide is also good for birdwatching since you have access to areas that are not reachable during low tide. Please keep in mind that this is a wild area and sometimes we can not spot as many birds as we would like. We are sorry to hear your experience was not as good as you would hope to be! Our guides are quite knowledgeable of the area and the wildlife as you can see from previous comments and reviews but they need to adapt the tour to the experience of all other guests.
