We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip. Our guide, Avelino Jorge, was so friendly and knowledgeable about all of the places we visited. We’ll worth the money!

Excellent trip

The trip was wonderful and the price - reasonable. The driver was very helpful in booking a time slot to visit the castle. He gave us bunch of tips and info about the places visited. Highly recommended.

A great day despite bad weather

Despite the horrible rainy, windy weather at Peña Palace, Paulo managed to keep up the spirits of the six in our group. He was amusing, entertaining and informative. The scenery at Cabo do Roco and along the coast was beautiful. Having independent time in Cascais was good. Would have liked a little more time in Sintra but the weather may have been a factor there.

Great first trip to Sintra and Pena Palace

This was a great first trip to see the highlights of Sintra and Pena Palace. Our pictures are fantastic. It was great value, and Paulo was a great driver and guide. His knowledge and recommendations (and quizzes) for food and things to do were excellent. Try the Baby Maker drink while you're in town!

Suggestion for the Tour Company: More communication from the company earlier in the process (not just the day before).

I also suggest adding an hour's time to the tour. It does feel rushed at times, and stopping for a meal in Europe often takes much longer than it does in the U.S., so a 90 or 120-minute break for food a free time goes by very quick and doesn't allow for all of the exploring your may want to do.

Booking Tip: Reading is fundamental. The post says that you need to buy your entry ticket for a specific time. If you get the wrong time, the guide may not be able to work any magic to get you in.

A Melding of Roman, Moorish and Portuguese Architecture

We hadn't originally planned to visit Pena Palace and Sintra and are so glad we did. Missing this tour would be an enormous mistake.

We started off at Pena Palace which becomes more spectacular the closer you get to it. The photos you've seen don't do it justice. It is an amazing amalgam of Roman, Moorish and Portuguese architecture over the centuries blended together rather than being demolished and replaced by successive conquerors. It was described to us as the Portuguese belief that everything that was there before them is part of the history of the country and is to be retained and built upon rather than destroyed, erased and replaced. The combined history of the various cultures combines to make Portugal the wonderful country it is today. The palace itself provides spectacular examples of the various cultures from 3D concrete sculpture, to cobblestone roads and paths to intricate and artistic ceramic tile walls from the Moorish influence. There is a palace wall/walkway that provides 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside ... a photographers dream ... especially the views of a neighbouring Moorish Castle.

If you plan to tour the inside of Pena Palace, be sure to register for the 9:30 am tour or you'll be waiting for hours in queues that move at a snail's pace. Be sure to give yourself lots of time to see and photograph the outside of the palace.

Sintra ... the next stop on the tour is not to be missed. It is a fabulous example of an old town constructed of merged architectural styles with photo opportunities lurking around every corner. That said, one of the most important reasons for being in Sintra is the rich, delicious traditional pastry that originates in Sintra ... the rectangular phyllo pastry filled with Nata (an egg, sugar and almond custard) that will put you into a state of euphoria without the sugar rush. They are unbelievably delicious. HOT TIP ... the bakery to get them from is PIRIQUITA which is on a small street opposite the palace in Sintra. The street is a fairly steep incline and Piriquita is a smallish shop on your left. Don't worry if you encounter an impossibly long line up of people looking for the creamy treat. Just keep on walking up the street looking for PIRIQUITA II ... their second shop which usually has a much shorter line.

Cascais is the final stop and from my perspective, not really worth the time. It is an over priced playground for the rich and famous. The stop is usually so you can have lunch ... a good idea given the length of the day and the trip. There are some very good restaurants, many of which are overpriced but some are reasonable. We decided that the best use of our time was sitting in the shade, across from the marina drinking cold drinks including water and just watching people go by ... but that's just our opinion.

The best way to visit Sintra

We had a great tour with Paulo our guide. We were 4 adults and there was another couple on the tour so this is really a small group tour. Paulo picked us up at our hotel on time. We visited the palace at Sintra, the old town of Sintra, Cabo da Roca, Guincho beach and Cascais. We had ample time everywhere and Paulo knew all the ways to avoid line ups! Paulo is very knowledgeable and shared interesting information with us. At the end of the day he drove us back to our hotel giving him an information on some Lisbon sites we passed. Overall a great day. We recommend the tour and Paulo.

Fantastic tour!

Great tour! Me and my family got picked up at our hotel, the van could fit 9 people perfectly and it was comfortable. The tour guide was tell us loads of information while driving and then when we got to our destination, he would let us explore on our own and give us a time limit on when to get back. We saw Sintra Palace, Pena Palace, the Cabo da Roca, and Cascais. It was great! I highly recommend!

Great experience

This was an ideal way to see Sintra. Our guide, Paolo, was very knowledgeable and approachable. On our own, we couldn't have easily navigated all the crowds. Highly recommend this one day excursion.

Fantastic Fairy Tale Tour with Incredible Local Guide Paolo S.!
I had an amazing time with Paolo S. as our guide! I am solo traveling and my tour group was only three people including myself. Paolo provided expert guidance and incredible service from start to finish. He noticed right away that I have some mobility issues and he was very thoughtful in recommending I take the transport service up the hill to Pena Palace, as opposed to walking, and made sure to inform me of any amount of stairs or far walking. So kind! Paolo made sure to show us all the important sights and fave personalized recommendations for our lunch in Cascais. He clearly cares about his clients and knows almost everything about Portugal! We learned a lot about history, too, as he narrated Portuguese history and important sites while driving along the coast. I would absolutely take another tour with Paolo! Hiring a private small group tour was a great idea because I avoided the crowds, got to see sites large and small as personally recommended by a local guide, and could see so much more in one day than I could have on my own.
