You’d think that because you’re lining up at a taxi stand at the airport that their services would be legit. Think again.
The wait took about fifteen minutes and I was directed to what seemed like a large suv for one person. When I told the driver which hotel I needed to go, he pulled over to look it up telling me he wasn’t sure where it was. Really? Well the ride took around 15 minutes and during that time I noticed he rested his arm right in the vision of the cab meter which was unusually placed near the gear shift and not in sight of the passenger. This should have raised a red flag for me as legit taxis typically have the meter in clear view. Leaning forward, I noticed a few minutes into the trip the fare read just over five euros. Just before arriving at the hotel the fare was 11.15 euros. But as soon as the driver pulled up he shut the meter off and told me the total was 29 euros. I was tired and jet lagged and against my better judgement chose not to say anything and paid him. Warning others to please pay attention and not get taken advantage of by dishonest taxi drivers here, especially if you are traveling by yourself. The legitimacy of taxi drivers in Lisbon requires re-considering services. Next time I’ll take an Uber.
