Portugal is so full of history around every corner, we really appreciated hearing about some of the men and women who came to Lisbon while it remained neutral during WW2– spies, of course, but also the refugees fleeing other parts of Europe. This tour was full of stories, landmark locations and photographs. The walk itself was well paced and not taxing. Highly recommend as a memorable point of our trip so far. Thanks to Joseph.

This was the highlight of my trip to Lisbon! Jose took us around Lisbon Centre to show us some very interesting buildings and the stories associated with them. Not only did we get WW2 history but also a comprehensive background of the reasons why Portugal stayed neutral. Jose gave us an insight into the lives and activities of various spy agent characters, the whole talk was engaging and entertaining. The added bonus was when he told us about the reminiscences of his 100 year old Grandmother and how the lives of Portuguese women were transformed by the incomers to the city.
The tour was incredibly good value in terms of historical content and sheer entertainment. Make sure that you sign up for it when you visit, Lisbon, you won't be disappointed!

Really great tour. Super interesting, lots of great facts and not too taxing to walk around. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and knew the answer to every question we had! Would definitely recommend this to anyone (history buff or not!).

Jose led a fascinating tour, sharing his extensive knowledge of the history of Lisbon during WWII. He wove many stories together, and painted wonderful pictures of the intriguing personalities from that era. I learned a lot about how Portugal managed to maintain neutrality during the War, as well as hearing about some fascinating spies and double-agents. He also talked about refugees and their lives during that era, as well as sharing some interesting Portuguese social history. I could have listened to him for several more hours! I highly recommend this tour.

A nice blend of history lesson and city tour. I learned interesting things about WWII and Lisbon that I did not know, even though I study hisotry and have been to Lisbon many times.

My friend and I went with the excellent guide José on the fantastic Lisbon City of Spies Tour on Friday 29 October 2021. We found it incredibly interesting, fun, knowledgeable and very well explained and presented! José speaks many languages, and, as it was raining cats and dogs, he took care to find lots of sheltered spots and places to sit down so nobody got tired. The tour was very punctual, you can even buy tickets from the guide at the meeting point, and it lasts two and a half hours and if you are interested in spies, secret services, the legendary double agents, the refugee and clandestine activities, and much, much more, you will enjoy every minute.

It always adds to a walking tour if the tour guide is as keen ‘to show’ as the visitors are ‘to see’. It’s also an added benefit if a tour guide can weave relevant information into a ‘story’ rather than simply reiterating sterile facts and figures.
Our guide, José, was not only enthusiastic but extremely knowledgeable. Wonderful sense of humour and a great talent for story-telling. ‘Lisbon - City of Spies’ was of particular interest to us and we were not let down.
[Just as an aside, TA needs to expand its categories for the ‘Who was with you?’ section. My adult son was with me, but there is no option for this, so I simply plugged in Family (teens).]
