Carlos was a really good guide and very professional. This trip is one now etched in the memory banks with wonderful photos to remember it by. A great climb with star gazing rest stops en route to acclimatise to the altitude. Once at the top, the sunrise and the beautiful colours it created in the sky were amazing.
Although photos are a must, it is worth remembering just to be mindful and absorb the beauty of the skies and the scenery with just your eyes. Nature is such a wonderful thing!

As my first solo trip, as expected I was very anxious and nervous. However, from start to finish the guide Carlos was friendly and welcoming. He was professional and made the trip the best experience. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone. You can go at your own pace, and there's no pressure to keep up as there are regular breaks. At the top Carlos brought us all some of his mothers recipe tea and a snack bar to keep us all going, which was super nice. I will always remember this trip, massive thank you to Carlos

What a fantastic experience! Starting in the darkness, witnessing the sunrise, then appreciating the daylight view of the Madeiran landscape on the way back down.
Carlos, our guide, was informal but professional, and aware of the varied abilities of the people on his tour. Everyone is encouraged to walk at their own pace, with regular catch-up stops to make sure everyone is ok. Our group had several single females, and everyone was more than comfortable with Carlos, who is very family-oriented. Hot tea at the top was much appreciated!
Do bear in mind that sunrise times vary slightly throughout the year, so the stated pick-up time will also vary - hopefully this clarifies another review that complained about the pick-up/drop-off time.

Although there was no sunrise, due to heavy cloud cover, Carlos still made the experience enjoyable with his friendly encouragement during the hike, warm tea at the top, and stopping off at an additional viewpoint on the way back to the city.

What a fantastic morning with stunning views of the Milky Way, shooting stars and the sun rise. Carlos was on time picking us up, very friendly and helpful all the way around. Provided extra layers for those that hadn’t fully realised how chilly it is up in the mountains at 6am. Kitted us out with head torches and took us up the well maintained path with lots of breaks to catch our breath. Carlos was attentive to all six of us, keeping an eye on the slowest and making sure we all made it to the top in time for the sunrise.
I can’t recommend him highly enough.
One note for those that might be put off by the negative reviews. I’m not here to start a review war or to question the lady’s negative review. I did, however, speak to Carlos about those reviews and he gave an entirely different version of events that suggests that he was in a no win situation. We had two single ladies in our party and at no time did it appear that they felt uncomfortable.
We were nearly put off of joining this trip because of those reviews. I’m glad we weren’t.

We were collected from our hotel at 4am, then set off with two other couples.
Arrived at the car park just after 5am, the skies were clear, full of stars, shooting stars and the Milky Way. That alone is worth the trip!
We then set off on the hike up to the summit. The walk is along a (mostly) well maintained path. You need a decent pair of trainers/strong footwear.
The guide was great. Paced is well and regular stops to get our breath and marvel at the night’s sky.
We reached the summit around 6:40am and the guide gave us hot tea and a biscuit. Very well received. It’s cold at the top so have something warm to wear.
We watched at the sun came up over the clouds at 7:10am. Breathtaking and quiet moving.
The guide allowed us plenty time to go to other view points and get photos.
We started to make our way back down around 7:40am. This is just as beautiful, the white clouds rolling over the mountains.
The walk down is easier! We were back in Funchal for 9:45am and out on the lounger with a book by 10 😊

Experience époustouflante ! Ça sera un souvenir mémorable des étoiles au lever du matin avec des nuages tout autour nous avons cru quitter la terre pour quelques minutes, je recommande ABSOLUMENT!

Booked using Viator, and swapped messages with the guide, Carlos, the day before to confirm pick up time.
Collected on schedule at around 04.45an, with just one other couple on the trip, and we were driven up to the mountains, We were treated to clear starry skies, with a great view of the Milky Way and shooting stars, and then started the uphill hike lit by head torches to Pico Ruivo, the highest point on Madeira. This is a 800 foot ascent, but Carlos provides plenty of rest-stops to allow everyone to catch their breaths, and his scheduling allows everyone to take this at a comfortable speed and still be at the peak for sunrise.
We were in for a treat at the peak, sitting above the clouds and watching the sun rise on the horizon and turning night to day. Carlos provided hot tea and biscuits, and plenty of time to take in the beautiful vistas.
The descent back to the mini bus was just as breathtaking - with the green, lush mountainous scenery we’d passed in darkness on the way up, now illuminated by glorious sunshine.
Journey back to Funchal took about an hour, and still able to catch the hotel’s breakfast at 9.30.
Spectacular trip - stars, sunrise, mountains. Perfectly curated by Carlos.

Lets start with the positives:
This Levada up to Pico Ruivo was amazing. Walking in sunrise, was incredible and the views we got when the sun went up was mind-blowing. It was definiately worth it, even if the weather conditions could have been better, as it was windy and rainy. But once you reach the top in the dark and got to see the mountains almost be awaken, it was worth it all, and we would do it again in a heartbeat.
However, we would never, ever, book with this guide again. His name is Carlos. We will recommend all of you to look for another company, just like we will do next time we go to Madeira. This is based on the following things:
1. He did not respect your private sphere. He was very much like he wanted to be close and give a helping hand all the time, to me, a lady, not the guys, without even asking if I needed help. I had to tell him to stop several times, which made me feel uncomfortable.
2. The tour-guide was clear he only did this when he wanted to and kept saying we should be grateful he did not cancel the walk. He said he does whatever he wants, if he doesn't feel like the levada in the morning, he'll cancel it.
3. He further commented that he did not care about reviews online at all, consider the levada it self, according to him, sells it self, so he can basically do whatever he want and treat people how he want.
4. The time-instructions in the descriptions did not respond to reality. In the description the activity was from 0400-0800 with pick up and drop of included. However, he picked us up at 0445 and dropped us of at 0930. We had obviously planned our day through the description time, so this made us miss the hotel breakfast and made us late for our next activity, so we had to take an expensive cab to get there in time.

Carlos is unprofessional. I booked our tour 4 months in advance for my honeymoon. I should have cancelled when he tried changing my tour date multiple times to accommodate his schedule, which I reluctantly did. On the night before our tour (which we were most excited for) Carlos cancels due to the “weather”. The link he sent me (to show me how bad it would be) and what I checked on my weather app both called for the most beautiful day in Madeira. Carlos you are just lazy. Block off days you don’t want to/can’t work. Due to you canceling the night before every other tour was booked and we missed out on an unbelievable opportunity. Thanks a lot je*%. Don’t use Carlos.
