During our short break in Porto we took the day trip to the Douro wine region. We highly recommend this tour: The organization in advance and on the day itself was perfect and very reliable. The two wineries visited (wine/port) were beautiful, authentic and they gave a good insight into the local wine culture. Our group leadership was very accomplished and we learned a lot about the country and people. Also the transport in the minibus was very pleasant!

My wife and I booked this trip because it was advertised as being very private with a small group of tourists, which it was. We were surprised to see how nice the van was. Our tour guide Rodrigo was absolutely amazing! He has lots of knowledge and information on the location, the history, football (soccer), and he was happy to tell a few jokes sprinkled in between to lighten up the mood. His English was excellent and the van had a microphone which made it very, very easy to listen to him and to understand everything he said. The wineries were fantastic and the lunch was great. I'd definitely book with them again! Be sure to bring cash to tip Rodrigo at the end of the trip.

The entire trip was very enjoyable and our guide Diana was terrific. The wine tastings were educational. These were small family run wineries. The river cruise was perfect with amazing scenery. I highly suggest this tour when you visit Porto.

We chose this tour after reading reviews, and because they offered a hotel pickup. The day before our tour, guests at our hotel had not been picked up by the company they were going with so I reconfirmed to be on the safe side. I received an email back saying we would be picked up at another spot for “access, traffic, construction sites, and other logistical factors”. None of those conditions existed in front of the hotel we were staying at or anywhere around it. It was raining and we found the pick up location to be confusing. When the driver did arrive, he parked up the road and asked us to walk up as it would be easier than coming to our location. What would have been easiest was to have been picked up at our hotel as has been promised.
Our driver was pleasant but unfortunately it was difficult to hear him in the middle and especially the backseats. We noticed other similar size vans where the drivers had a headset on and would recommend that be considered. There were six of us in addition to the driver and we were the last board. It would have been nice if the driver had asked everybody to introduce themselves and where they were from. We eventually did that on our own along the way, but it would’ve been a nice way to start.
We left Porto in rain and extreme fog, but fortunately by the time we got to the Douro Valley the weather improved greatly making for a very pleasant day weather wise.
In Pinhão we were told there would be a bathroom on board the one-hour boat cruise. There seemed to be a bit of confusion as to what boat etc. we were on and the one we ended up on did not have a bathroom. The description said there would be a visit to the historic railway station “adorned with 24 iconic tile panels” and this did not happen. We had time before we boarded the boat cruise, so not sure why the railway station visit was missed? The visits and tastings at the winery and port house were lovely as was the meal in the old school house.
In general, we had a pleasant day but starting out in the rain and not knowing if we were in the right place was not a good start. Not having the hotel pick up as advertised in the description or the tour of the rail station was disappointing. I would recommend that anybody booking this tour confirm that those two items are definitely included.
Our driver was pleasant but unfortunately it was difficult to hear him in the middle and especially the backseats. Thank you for your feedback! We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the day overall.
Regarding the pick-up, Porto is currently facing significant traffic due to ongoing construction work for the new Metro, and as the fourth most traffic-congested city in Europe, even small road deviations can cause considerable delays. We always try to coordinate with other pickups and minimize inconvenience, and we appreciate your understanding.
As for the historic railway station, it's farther than it appears, as we must navigate around to the other side. Due to changes in parking access this year, we may remove it from our summer itinerary.
We’ll also consider your feedback about the sound system and guest introductions to improve future tours.

What was Disappointing.
“3 course meal matched with wines.
Hardly: 1 small dip shared between 4
1 White wine, 1 red wine. Not matched.
Same wine as all other tables in restaurant.
Final stop for Port Wine.
Staff ignored us.
Our driver Jose did the tour and information. Staff seemed unhappy for us to be there. Appeared we were interrupting their day.
What was excellent.
First stop Quinta Dos CastelAres was sensational. Our host was charming, funny, engaging and very informative.
Could not have hoped for more.
Wines were exceptional as was the Olive Oil and the honey. The Chestnut honey is delicious.
The boat trip was also a highlight.
The “skipper “ was such a character.
Beautiful scenic cruise and, again informative and engaging.
Overall it was a great experience but the offer needs to match the promise and perhaps wineries and restaurant need to be sure they want to be involved.
We were only a group of 6, so no excuse.
I’d certainly do a tour of the region, I’m not sure I’d choose this operator.

The three-course meal at the restaurant was designed to showcase local flavors, paired with regional wines. We work closely with our partners to ensure a high-quality experience, and while they are generally generous, we’re sorry if it didn’t meet your expectations.
Regarding the second winery, we always strive to ensure our guests are well attended to. We apologize if this Quinta did not provide the welcoming atmosphere we all expect. We've worked with this partner for over 10 years, and while your experience was an exception, we’ve addressed this concern with them. They are deeply sorry for this situation, and it is not representative of their usual hospitality.
As for the tour, we are proud of our guides like José, who are passionate about sharing local knowledge.
Once again, we apologize if the staff at the final stop gave the impression of being less welcoming. This is not the standard we aim for.

Our tour guide, Philip, was great. He made the day a nice experience, even in the rain. Lunch was good and the wineries visited made the tastings special. Philip showed us various sights along the way and gave thorough information.

They are perfectly lovely at Cool Tours so I would think the answer would be "Absolutely". Our van had 5 of us as a family and another couple and it was the perfect size.

Hi,
You would need to message the tour company directly, but if there is enough of you, they would possibly offer a private tour.
When we went there were about 10 people, all picked up from around 2 or 3 pick up points in the centre (all within a 5 minute walk from your hotels), as some parts are pedestrianised, so no vehicle access.
But I would say, well worth the money, a great day out.
Picked up around 09:45, dropped off at approx. 17:30

They post two separate prices, one including the cruise and one not including it. Be advised that it is the same tour - we opted out of the cruise and it turned out we had to wait for those who opted in to go on it. I thought Cooltours could've made that clearer. We walked into the town of Pinhão - 5-10 minutes - and just had a cup of coffee.
