DO NOT BOOK! Our guide was not local, which is fine, but she also had absolutely no idea where to take us. We had a clear night with a Kp 5 forecast for the aurora and a wonderful display. However, the guide just drove for a couple of minutes out of town and stopped at the first parking lot. She said we'll stay here for 1.5 hours. We had a direct, unobstructed line of sight of Reykjavik's city lights and light pollution. There was also constant traffic with several cars per minute going right by us. We saw more headlights up close than northern lights, while she just shouted "Who wants pictures?!" (which were terribly overexposed) Then she said we'll go somewhere else. We finally headed into the darkness, only to stop at a very well-lit gas station down the road.
Also on the way out she kept shouting "Look at the auroras, they are dancing!", but also kept the lights inside on and refused to turn them off before she stops somewhere, so we couldn't see anything outside. Once we stopped, she turned on even more lights, including bright blue LEDs on the ceiling.
Moreover, the bus was freezing inside. On the way out people complained about it, but the guide kept insisting she had "the heater at 28". There was an open gap at the door and she said she can't close it until she stops somewhere and kept driving. After the second location she agreed to cut the tour short so we can go home and only then she acknowledged that the heater was broken.
If you want to see the northern lights, avoid Arctic Adventures. You'd be better off going to a park in Reykjavik and watching the aurora from there.

We were excited for a good Aurora forecast on the night of the tour. It was quite cold outside (-10 C), but when we got on the tour bus, it wasn't much warmer, maybe 5 C max. The driver/guide refused to acknowledge there was a problem with the heating and claimed the heater was turned on at 28 C. We were super frozen by the time we arrived at the viewing location, where it was obviously cold and windy due to the season. We tried to take pictures quickly, but there were a lot of lights from the city still visible, as well as headlights from cars in the oncoming traffic. Such bright lights get in the way of the eyes relaxing and viewing the full majesty of the northern lights, and they also interfere with the photography. The guide was taking free pics, but when we saw them eventually, all pics of our group were overexposed and not good. They can still be seen on their website. We then drove to another location, which also had bright streetlights nearby, and we were even colder because there continued to be no heating in the bus on this very cold night. We watched and took pics there for a while, but our entire group wasn't feeling it anymore because of the cold and the problems, so we called it an early night and rode back to Reykjavik.
Overall we are disappointed to have wasted this good opportunity on this subpar tour, I wouldn't recommend booking aurora tours with this company if you care at all about seeing it.

Bitterly disappointed with the experience we have had with Arctic adventures. We arrived to Iceland on Tuesday when our northern lights tour that was originally booked with Arctic adventures was cancelled suddenly at 1pm, we missed out on the day we had planned. We then tried to book for the next day, the Northern lights tour was fully booked! finally we get a spot on the Thursday, we were really looking forward to it and our driver was pretty convinced that something would happen so we waited and waited… we sat on a coach for roughly 3 hours, no access to a toilet even though there was a locked one on board! we had to go behind the lava house in the Arctic freezing cold temperatures!
After about 3 hours doing nothing, so bored I went to sleep, he decided to drive to another location, we around again on the bus and waited and waited, outside it was hurricane winds unbearable to even look at anything. There was no Northern lights and to be honest it was a complete disappointment and waste of an evening, on the way back the bus was an awkward array of quiet disappointed people with the driver saying he feels ‘sorry for us’! He was driving very bumpy over the roads, at one point me and my partner bounced so high out of our seats we hit our heads on the ceiling!
Sadly we could have easily paid for another tour, but chose to stick with the company. After the tour was over the driver said we can book another tour for free… Well that’s great if your not leaving the next day! We have no way to book another tour and we definitely don’t want another experience like that. I understand it’s down to Mother Nature, but at least offer us a hot chocolate, A pastry, another resource instead of waiting around for nothing, it’s a very depressing way to end someone’s holiday.
After about 3 hours doing nothing, so bored I went to sleep, he decided to drive to another location, we around again on the bus and waited and waited, outside it was hurricane winds unbearable to even look at anything. Wrap up really really warm if you're going in January, it's -16c and your feet and hands are the most important!
We were incredibly lucky and got to see a fantastic showing of the lights. The forecast was saying it was going to be a 3, but our guide said it was more akin to a 7. Remember it's not an exact science and it may not happen, however it's worth a shot.
Our guide Fred was very funny (extremely zany and off-the-wall) and knowledgeable, gave lots of tips on camera settings, and it was fantastic to have access to his photos after the tour. I didn't manage to get great photos myself unfortunately, but having the ones he took was really lovely. The main thing is when you go is to immerse yourself in the atmosphere, this way you don't get too hung up on the photo aspect, but actually get to enjoy this phenomenon and be grateful for your experience.

I can only recommend the minibus northern lights tour with Arctic Adventures.
Our guide Aron was very nice and motivated. He took us to two different locations to see the northern lights and took great pictures of us too. He also gave some general and interesting information about northern lights.
The minibus itself was maybe not the most comfortable one, as the ride was quite bumpy, but as I don't have problems with my back I personally didn't mind.
It was my second tour with Arctic Adventures (also did the golden circle afternoon tour), both tours with my kids (age 8 and 10) and I would definitely do tours with them again.
In fact they will be my go to company for tours if I ever come back to Iceland.
Our guide Aron was very nice and motivated. He took us to two different locations to see the northern lights and took great pictures of us too. He also gave some general and interesting information about northern lights.
The minibus itself was maybe not the most comfortable one, as the ride was quite bumpy, but as I don't have problems with my back I personally didn't mind.
It was my second tour with Arctic Adventures (also did the golden circle afternoon tour), both tours with my kids (age 8 and 10) and I would definitely do tours with them again.
In fact they will be my go to company for tours if I ever come back to Iceland.

We were very fortunate and we saw the Northern Lights on this tour, however there were still some issues that made this tour less pleasurable, and I cannot rate it higher because of this.
Firstly - the pros. The first being, obviously, that we saw the Northern Lights. We had a brilliant display. We did see them better in Reykjavik once we departed the bus, but nonetheless the tour did deliver on that. In fact, our tour guide was in constant contact with other guides and knew where to go to get the best view of the lights.
Now, for the not so good....
The first issue is that our bus had NO HEAT. I feel that this could have been easily remedied as it was apparent to all the passengers AND the driver when were still in Reykjavik that there was no heat. A change to a different bus should have occurred. Especially considering the weather was frigid and below zero. We were all already cold before we ever got to the location of watching the lights, and because of that, nobody wanted to stay out very long to watch the lights because we were freezing.
Secondly, we were told to meet at a bus stop that was a 15 minute walk from our hotel. After walking that far in the cold, and waiting 20 minutes for our bus, it stopped to pick up other passengers 2 minutes from our hotel!
And the last, and very minor thing, is that our guide didn't really give us any information about the lights or Iceland - instead he was telling strange "folklore" stories that all seemed to involve death, including one that was about children dying and the mother taking her life. It all felt very random and inappropriate.

Excellent tour. Marcel found the northern lights for us to view. On the way back to the hotel, he made a special stop so we could see the lights more visibly and dancing across the sky. Well worth freezing in the night cold.

Fred was fantastic! He was informative, funny and personable. He let us know the there was no guarantee that we would see the lights and explained how they are formed. Lucky for us we had a fantastic show. They started out small but we waited for a bit and we had a great experience.
Fred got a lot of great pictures for us along with a group shot and individual group pictures.
This is the reason we visited Iceland in Dec and we were so happy we got a great show.
We did plan our outing on our first night in Iceland encase we had to try another night. Glad we were so lucky to see them our first night.

No lights to be seen sadly. Driver/ tour guide was very nice. He had lots of info but didn't wear us out with too much chatter.
