It was so thrilling to visit the Sami tribe and ride on a reindeer sledge in Tromso last week. We were given a small bucket with the feed for the reindeer and they were hungry and in a hurry to snatch it from my hands. It was indeed a lifetime experience to sit on the sledge and drive around. There was snow all around and it was beautiful to go around the route. The Sami girl gave us some tea and gave a lecture about their life. I felt it was in a fairly land and could not believe that I was actually talking to the deer and the Sami girl. It was indeed a great experience.

Den Start fanden wir ein bisschen holprig, da sehr viele Menschen in unterschiedliche Busse steigen mussten. Das war etwas unübersichtlich. Als wir angekommen sind, hatten wir viel Zeit mit den Rentieren. Das Essen war gut und wir saßen gemütlich. Uns wurde über eine Stunde vom Sami-Leben erzählt. Es hat uns gut gefallen !

I went on the event "From Tromsø: Reindeer Ranch and Sami Culture Tour." It was a wonderful afternoon! When I went, the Samis hosting us were cousins who were working together, with one showing us his herd and the other explaining Sami culture and history.
Feeding the reindeer was so interesting because I got to see how they act as a herd, how close to wild they are (even though in a "domesticated" herd, and see the animals up close.
The presentation about Sami culture, history (including political struggles and the current impact of climate change), and singing was incredible. The man was not a scripted speaker--he shared with us from his real life. He said he shared as he did because he wants more people to know about the Sami--to know the beauty and dignity of their people and also to counteract harmful stereotypes.
The Sami singing (joiking) was so well explained and beautiful to hear! The reindeer stew was tasty.
The Sami cousins hosting the event were dignified hosts who gave us the honor of seeing a little bit of their lives. I don't know how often the Sami hosts change, but the ones from Feb 22, 2023 were incredible.
The tour company that drove us to and from did a good job of getting us there in a timely, comfortable, safe way. (Safe doesn't feel like something I take for granted traveling north of the Arctic Circle.)
My recommendation is to do a little research on Sami culture and reindeer so you can ask deeper questions. Both cousins were happy to share as I asked questions based on what I'd already learned.

I went there with my mom and we spent a really great time there. People are really kind and pay attention to all the details, you can have hot drinks if needed, if you are cold you can spend time near the fire. And the most special time was with reindeers: it was wonderful! You can get very close to them they are cute and kind animals. We did enjoy a lot, thank you!

We were driving by and saw the farm. Stopped to look at the reindeer and a Sami lady told us that if we like to stay, a tour starts in half an hour so we bought the tickets and are very glad we did. The experience was lovely, reindeer are beautiful creatures and the guides shared a lot of interesting facts about the animals and their habits. There was plenty of hot drinks and biscuits that guests could help themselves to in cosy tents by the fire. We also tried a reindeer stew and learned about Sami culture. This experience is great for those who find outdoors and learning about other cultures interesting. After lunch, we moved to the big tent to listen stories and learned more about Sami from a girl who is a herder and is planing to continue her family tradition. Her stories were amusing, funny and informative. We loved it and are still humming the joik that she sang for us.

Super recommended! The story of sami tribe was very touching and enlightening. Loved the reindeers, they were cute and well tammed. It was a good tour with reasonable price. They also give you two choices of soups between reindeer or vegie, with coffee or hot chocolate whatever you prefer! Only thing I didn't really liked was that it was a big tour, so we were fitted in two big buses for this single tour. But other than that, I loved everything about it:)

We are sorry to hear that you felt it was crowded, usually these months are a very busy period and guests come from all over the world to spend their Christmas/New Year holidays in the North with the reindeers. However at our camp there is plenty of space so you can just wander around with the reindeers :)

It was such a fun experience feeding reindeer! Just be careful with the antlers. There are so many of them and you can go around the whole area, spend lots of time with them. The food served was reindeer stew, hot and yummy. Our host was a friendly Sami girl, she explained interesting information about Sami culture and sang a few songs. Everything was well organized.
