We took the northern lights tour. You pay a premium for a guide, transportation and equipment. Going out into minus 10 it is expected that equipment is fully functional. However it turned out that there was a hole in the boot supplied to me, which left my foot frozen for the whole evening and ruined my experience.

Magical and unique experience! Very well organized tour, from the meeting point, to the briefing, to the place where we managed to see the dawn dance. We booked a minivan tour, absolutely recommended, because it is easier to get around. Thanks to Klara, our guide, and Gro, who drove the van! Highly recommended

The guide, Ferenc was the best. Very enthusiastic and good photographer, eager to take us to the best spot. I'd had given the experience 5 stars if it was a bit more comfortable, for example some camping chairs would have been nice to sit around all those hours. The mats that were provided were ok but not the best option and not enough for everyone

The tour was very well-organised and of course, it is never guaranteed to actually see some lights, but the team made a great effort to make it possible, so that we were ultimately rewarded.
Our guide Alex was fantastic sharing his experience, knowledge and enthusiasm with us while also having a great sense of humour. He took amazing photos that we received very quickly, just one day after the tour. Our driver Gro drove us safely to and from our camping spot.
We would definitely recommend this tour if you don’t want to miss out on an amazing experience. Thank you to Alex, Gro and the entire team!

Apologies if this is long.
A couple of things, just as a reminder to people looking at these trips. Use the aurora forecasts as a guide of when is probably a good chance of seeing an aurora. If they all agree that it's not going to happen then that's a bad sign, but even if they all agree it's going to happen - the only forecasts that are anywhere close to accurate are only up to 45 mins in advance. We were only in Stromso 2 nights but had to choose one so booked the Friday as every forecast said Friday was the better night. Up until Thursday afternoon where they all changed and said that Thursday would be good but Friday would be unlikely.
The cloud cover forecasts as well - I had looked at them all week and thought I knew where we would need to be to see anything, if there was anything to see. I expected a good 3 or 4 hour drive, if not longer.
We turned up at the meeting point and there was a little confusion as it's the meeting place for lots of tour operators. Any time a minibus turned up people would swarm it to be told that it was a different company. Most of the names sound very similar. Suddenly from behind I heard a voice calling this tour and saw a woman in an Arctic Adventures Tours jacket calling out names, including mine. Instead of bundling us into a minibus we were taken to a nearby building and asked to select some boots and thermal suits (they had a reasonable selection - I'm size 12UK and XXL and there had larger than that). It wasn't compulsory but they advised taking them anyway. You could leave your boots there if you liked and there were a couple of toilets. After a brief introduction we went back outside and were split into 2 minibuses. The buses themselves were reasonably comfortable and well driven by our driver, Gro. As we drove our guide Klara talked to us. This was in English but I think everyone on board could speak English but Klara could aslo speak several other languages. I can't emphasise how much they want to manage your expectations - which is a good thing. Advising to take the forecasts with a pinch of salt, advising that sometimes you don't get clear skies and if you do there might be nothing to see. A couple of people had gone the night before and she advised them to not expect it to be as good tonight (this made me sad). Also some advice that I luckily didn't need like don't book it when there's a full moon.
We drove for an hour or so, north of Tromso (my cloud cover maps said south). Klara was anxious to get there early, so was happy that we were all on time, as there aren't a huge number of places to stop. We pulled up and Klara told us that, despite all her expectations, there was an aurora. Not a really strong one, but one nonetheless. Be careful if you opt to wear their boots (if it's anywhere near freezing or below then I would recommend it) be careful when leaving the bus as they are quite bulky so I fell off the bus entirely.
There are rumours that aurora are invisible to the naked eye and only cameras see them. That's not entirely true. Really low intensity ones are almost invisible, but these were visible to the naked eye, but it depends on your night vision - I'm pushing 50 so mine wasn't great but I could clearly see a couple of bands of light. They were quite silvery to me but the sky had a bit of a greenish tint to it. My wife saw them as clearly green. There was still a little bit of light in the sky as well.
After a little while, Klara got us back on the bus to move to a slightly better location. Didn't fall off the bus this time but set up my DSLR on my tripod again and turned away only to hear it crash to the roadway, luckily only damaging it rather than totalling it. Top tip - check all your tripod legs are secure!
Went down towards a beach where Klara and the other guide were going to make a camp fire. It was darker now so the aurora were clearer, as well as being able to see loads of stars. I was taking pics out to see when I heard a gasp from back to where they were setting up the fire. Turned around and my jaw dropped. Nearly forgot to keep taking pictures.
I've seen pictures and video of strong auroras and they don't do this justice. Took a few half-decent pics (IMHO) but they don't capture it. It didn't last long - mibbe 20 minutes, if that, and I just stood there grinning like an idiot. Instead of being towards the horizon it was all around and it was bright and moving around quite violently. It almost felt weird that it was slient. It was also really, really, big - if that makes sense. Not some pretty wispy thing in the sky but overwhelmingly all around you.
I got a proper emotional reaction to it. I can't compare it to much else, but perhaps the first time I ever saw the stars on a clear night with no light pullution or one time when I was standing under a really powerful thunderstorm at night.
It calmed down again and for the rest of the night it was relatively low intensitity, but still quite visible and much easier to photograph as it wasn't as wild.
Klara lit the fire (she got distracted by the aurora!) and dsitributed food pouches, hot juice and hot chocolate. Food was OK - basically a wee pouch of stew with veggie options. Even if you didn't eat it it would be a good handwarmer.
We stuck around for a while then were asked if we wanted to head straight away or stop on the way back for a different view. The consensus was to stop off on the way back at the top of the hill.
The aurora was still going, but at the higher altitude it was a lot redder. It was snowy too so made it look different than right on the coast. Took some photos and eventually headed back.
Got back to Tromso about 00:30ish, got changed and headed home. Klara said she'd send us her pictures (including ones of us) a couple of days later, which she did.
A few notes:
The thermal suits - I had a decent jacket so my top was warm but I was wearing jeans and it was about -2C. That's fine if you're walking about, but if you're sitting around - wear the suit.
The boots - the boots were really warm and waterproof, which was useful as the ground was a mushy. But remember that they are pretty bulky so be careful or you'll end up on your face.
Toilets - there weren't any en route or at where we ended up. You could end up anywhere so they can't deal with that. I'm sure, if she was asked, Gro would stop and let you go behind a tree.
Costs - when I first booked it, it felt expensive for what felt like a bus ride and I'd read some reviews of different operators that just said that they just drove to the same place as the big buses. It was clear from when we got on that Klara wasn't a passive guide. She was checking all the real-time space weather and weather forecasts and speaking to all the other guides on what I presume was whatsapp who were already out. She clearly loves seeing the aurora and she was trying to be upbeat about our chances, but was clearly sad that they weren't brilliant then was overjoyed when we even got the minor aurora when we arrived and was giddy when the more powerful ones hit, despite the forecast. I'd been looking at this all week - if I was driving I would have gone the wrong way and I don't think I would have seen anything.
In conclusion, Klara and Gro could't make the aurora appear, but they made sure that we had the best chance to see it if it did. If it didn't it wouldn't have been a horrible experience, a frustrating one, perhaps, but the people on the tour were all lovely and Klara and Gro were very chatty and nice. The stars were stunning and in other circumstances I would have been delighted with such a view.
But we arrived and immediately had great clear views of the the aurora - better than I'd ever seen. I would have probably have gone home happy with that as it was beatiful (I was ecstatic when I took a rubbish picture on my phone back home that you can barely make up!)
But then I really saw the Northern Lights and how they danced.

I'd been looking at this all week - if I was driving I would have gone the wrong way and I don't think I would have seen anything.
In conclusion, Klara and Gro could't make the aurora appear, but they made sure that we had the best chance to see it if it did. If it didn't it wouldn't have been a horrible experience, a frustrating one, perhaps, but the people on the tour were all lovely and Klara and Gro were very chatty and nice. The stars were stunning and in other circumstances I would have been delighted with such a view.
But we arrived and immediately had great clear views of the the aurora - better than I'd ever seen. I would have probably have gone home happy with that as it was beatiful (I was ecstatic when I took a rubbish picture on my phone back home that you can barely make up!)
But then I really saw the Northern Lights and how they danced.
Even thinking about it is nearly making me cry.

Very well organised and the guide (Klara) was knowledgable, while the driver (Kjell Odvar) also chipped in with his extensive experience.

Our tour guide Ferenc and driver Gro were fantastic. Conditions were difficult on this particular night, but they really fought to give us the best chances -- and in the end we found a spot to camp and did see some northern lights!

Clearly ahead of the pack compared to other providers: Here you try exceptionally hard, Ferenc also told a lot about Tromsø on the bus, which is interesting for tourists besides the spectacular Northern Lights. We have approached several places for the view of the Northern Lights. At a lonely location that was beautiful we then set up camp. It was all very cozy and very warm due to the thermal suits and the food was also very good. A safe driver got us safely through the night. Absolutely 100% recommended! 😃

Brilliant from start to finish. The guide was super friendly and the driver was really good at her job , felt very safe on the mini bus.
They drove us an hour away from Tromso to find clear and skies and the spot they chose for us was incredible, the aurora was waiting for us and continued for the next 3 hours. We had hot chocolate and a tasty meal round the campfire. Absolutely perfect night and i shall definitely recommend and use again

Your reviews are amazing. I'm trying to fulfil my mums and mother-in-law bucket lists. Your last availability is the night we arrive in Tromso. Would it be possible to do a tour to see the Northern lights for 4 people in either 23 or 24th March 2019? I would be so grateful.
