Great trip. February so very cold for the kids but heaters and blankets provided. Friendly staff and nice scenery.
Was great taking the morning trip then hopping off at the museum peninsula to look round the fram for a couple of hours before jumping back onto the later boat

We had wonderful sunny weather and the guide was very good. Since the boat stops at Bygdoy peninsula, we used the chance and visited the museum there. A big time saver compared to returning to harbour and then going for the museum. I recommend first doing the cruise and then visiting the museum.

My wife is a stroke revoverer and wheelchair dependent. We are seasoned cruisers having cruised with all the major cruiselines over many years before my wife had her stroke. After two years from her stroke we decided to try cruising again since several weekends at Warners were very successful. I approached my usual travel agent with the brief of a cruise for my wife and I, anywhere, sailing from the UK, but it has to be wheelchair accessible. We went to the travel agent together so the travel agent saw the extent of my wifes disability and to explain her needs. We left it with her and called back together a few days later. The cruise she came up with was a 14 night cruise to the Northern Lights with Ambassador Cruiseline on the ship Ambience. She "sold" it to us promising a fully accessible suite (a suite because of the wheelchair she said - found out later a balcony cabin was available with just the same space as the suite) and the promise of a cruiseline that had a good track record with disabled passengers. She said she had personally travelled on the ship and showed us photographs of the ship. We paid in excess of £7000 for the cruise. I addition to this we had to pay over £750 for a profiling bed, something that a great deal of disabled passengers would require, but not available as part of the "disabled" cabin. We left Tilbury in November and I have to admit it was the quickest and easiest embarkation we have ever had - literally from car park to cabin in just 25 minutes. There the dream ended.
Once in the cabin, which in all fairness was quite accessible, we felt it was quite cold. I called the service desk several times over the next few days and had numerous visits from maintenance who gave many varied excuses for the temperature (which according to their own measuring equipment only read 20.8C) until eventually after actually stopping the Captain during one of his rounds got the official explanation from the actual Chief Engineer that they had a problem with the heating in that area of the ship, whereby he issued us with a small domestic fan heater.
As for the ship being wheelchair friendly it really was a joke !! The theatre which seated 800 people, there were spaces for only 4 (yes four) wheelchairs and even then if the carer wanted to sit with their partner we were given a white folding plastic garden chair. talk about discrimination !! The buffet area was totally inaccessible during meal times since the table were bolted to the floor and if we wanted to sit at a table we would have to move a chair away which only caused congestion. No wheelchair accessible areas. As to getting off the ship and visiting the ports, it was impossible because the shuttle buses were not capable of taking a wheelchair passenger, neither were any of the trips for the same reason. Therefore on port days we were restricted to the ship, or rather the cabin, since the activities on board ship on port days was negligible. The cabin had a small flat screen television that had severely restricted channels (3 news channels, a film channel showing "looped movies", and a childrens channel) so port days were pretty miserable.
Of course, I reported my concerns to the service desk as we are asked to, but at every request we were told they couldnt do anything because it was an "old" ship, even though it had a major refit only two years ago.
To add insult to injury my wife became ill the day before we disembarked and needed to be rushed to hospital as soon as we docked, despite several requests for assistance from both port staff and Ambassador personel we were told they couldnt help, and suggested I leave my wife alone whilst I got my luggage. Totally without feeling or compassion.
On my return (my wife was in hospital for three weeks ) I wrote to Ambassador and my travel agent detailing my disappointment. They didnt even reply to me, just sending a reply to the travel agent to pass on to me. They just apologised for my disapointment saying that they had taken my points on board but it was an "old" ship and wasnt possible to change many of my concerns. I asked for some form of compensation but they declined.
Ambassador is the worse cruise experience, and indeed the worse experience of any holiday, and should be ashamed to describe itself as wheelchair friendly. For the able bodied passenger it would be quite acceptable but as wheelchair passengers we were certainly third class passengers forced to pay first class money.

I found it more atypical to go sailing rather than sailing. So I booked a slightly more expensive ride because the outside was supposedly heated.
Beware it is false, there is no heating, only a small plaid. With low temperatures you should plan to dress warmly otherwise you do not enjoy it properly. It’s nice but don’t expect anything amazing. For me, it's not worth the price at all.

Went for the morning winter trip, definitely worth it, I at first though that 2 hours might not be enough, but as it was quite cold, (well for me) it was just long enough, they give you little blankets and the views are great, the guide tells you about all the places you and see and they are very informative, once we got to the area where the musiums are we were given the choice of being dropped off there and picked back up on the later trip, or stay on and finish the tour. I opted to stay in as the Viking boat museum was closed and that’s the one I would have wanted to see, obviously that is t the fault of the boat trip so all good.
I would definitely recommend this trip over the newer electric boats, the old wooden Helena is a lovely old thing

Great cruise from downtown Oslo, around the Inner Oslofjord. You get to see the little wooden cottages on the smaller surrounding islands, lighthouses, other boats, and nature. The boat is open air, so dress warm.
Also, the boat docks at Bygdoy, "the museum island." I didn't know that ahead of time so that was a nice surprise! I was on the 1 p.m. cruise so we had a choice of either staying on the cruise and sailing back to the departure spot, OR getting off the cruise to go to the museums and finding our own way back to downtown Oslo. I think the people on the earlier cruise had the option to take the cruise, get off at Bygdoy to go to museums, and then get back on the boat when it returned later with the 1 p.m. guests, so that would be the ideal way to do it, I think.

Great way to see Oslo Fjord, gorgeous cosy boat with blankets, lamps and hot drinks onboard as well as other refreshments. The tour included great info and the staff were brilliant, would definitely recommend.

The Helena was a great way to see the small islands outside Oslo and to view Oslo harbour from the water. Heaters and blankets were provided if needed for the autumn season and these worked really well with the on board bar 😊. Very good informative commentary throughout the session. And good value.

For the price this was the perfect way to see the fjords and was only 2 hours on the dot. It even rained a bit for the first 30 mins but they had blankets and you were sitting under a covered area, including the heat lamps on the lower outside level. Staff was amazing, accommodating and they have drinks and snacks and a bathroom that was clean!

DEFINITELY wear layers. It was quite chilly in the city when we went in mid-April but when we got out on the water, it was really chilly. Obviously, if you go in July it would be a different experience but I think the temperature change would be proportional. Also, where you sit will impact the temperature. I sat on the lower deck (i.e. closer to the waterline) and we had no problem with the wind. At one point on the cruise I went up on the poop deck to ask the staff a question and the wind made it REALLY cold (one family had taken shelter in the wheel house by the captain).
The cruise is worth it though!
