It was a nice experience. In fact it is not just about the views but the energetic feeling. The crew is very friendly. You'll enjoy nice music played along the way as well. The design of the train is wonderful. But, about the ride, it could have been done better for the price.

This was really the biggest travesty. The train would leave from demodara at 9.05, we eventually waited there until 9.50. Then we drove a bit, stopped at Ella's, then at the nine arch bridge, stood still there for 10 minutes.
Then to last station, there stood still for (more than) half an hour, and then go back the same route.
In between also stood still for 20 minutes in the middle of the track. Another 10 minutes stood still at the bridge.
So of the 3 hours you would drive, we only actually drove for just over an hour.
In addition, there is only one open-top coupe, where everyone wants to stand. If you really want to make this a tourist train, open it as much as you can.
In addition, ask tripadvisor 14 euros!!! You can get a ticket at the station for 1000-2000 rupees (less than euro).
Would definitely not recommend it!!

Recently, I experienced the Calipso train ride from Badulla to Bandarawela, one of the most breathtaking train journeys in Sri Lanka. I booked my ticket a week in advance through the Sri Lanka Railway's online reservation system.
Booking Process
The booking process is straightforward. After logging into the website, you can reserve a seat in your preferred compartment, such as the Observation Deck. You’ll receive an M-ticket with a QR code and your seat number directly on your mobile. Tickets are reasonably priced at Rs. 1,000.
Important Tips
No Canteen: There is no canteen on the train, so it’s best to bring your own snacks and water for the journey.
Charging Points: Compartments are equipped with charging points, which can be very handy for long journeys.
Beware of Ticket Scams: Local travel agents may try to sell you pink tickets, claiming you’ll get a seat. However, pink tickets are for the standing compartment only and do not come with seats.

It was OK, but we expected a bit more. Most of the ride is through rural terrain but nearly no open views of nature. We also had a 1 hour wait at the final station, before returning. But there was very little to do there.

This was OK, but it's quite short considering the stop at the (very crowded) nine arches bridge. The open carriage was also very crowded, so we mainly sat in the viewing carriage. Some nice views to look at.
Be aware of train staff saying "come I show you something" and then leading you to the front of the train where they insist on filming you hanging out of the train - then asking for tips of course. This wasted about 10 minutes of the trip. Like many things in Sri Lanka, you need to learn when to firmly say no. It took me a while to do so!

MUST DO WHEN IN ELLA!!!
I cannot recommend this train ride enough. The views are nothing short of spectacular. The outdoor deck is amazing to view from.
Definitely get on at Demodara. This means you will go over (and stop on) the nine arch bridge. Enough time to jump off, go and take a few snaps before getting back on to depart.
There is about an hour or so gap when in Banderawella so be aware of that. You can pop down to the local waterfalls in a TUKTUK, good use of the hour for sure.
Overall, 10/10 recommend the experience.

It was convincingly wonderful to see thick trees and tea plantations spread across a dynamic land of steep mountains and valleys, and to hear that the view from a roofless vehicle was the best in Asia. It was also great to be able to stop at Archbridge and take pictures. The unfortunate thing is that I was informed at 9am the day before the tour that the service would be shortened. I had already booked to stay on the route and had to pay for the tuk-tuk when I couldn't travel by train because of the shortened route. The response was to cancel if they were unhappy. The reason for the shortened section was the fact that group passengers boarded in the middle of the train, and the operation of the tour was strongly questioned.

There was a film shooting went on that day by using the train. So the management had to cancel the return trip for other passengers. Sorry for that.
However we are glad to hear that you enjoyed the one way trip.

Quite a lovely experience on the train ride itself and over the 9 Arch's Bridge. One way is sufficient from either Demodara Station to Bandarewela Station or from Bandarewella to Demodara as you will cover all the important sights and beautiful views. I heard about the Observation carriage which provides entertainment but we did not experience it. We were looking forward to the local folksongs.
Yohan Chaturanga from the Tourist Train office was extremely helpful with our bookings and advice. The toilets at the train stations were very bad so be prepared. They do have toilets in the train.
Another piece of advice if you are travelling in small numbers than purchase the tickets at the station as the price is 1,000LKR per person. We paid 6,000LKR per person.
Yohan Chaturanga from the Tourist Train office was extremely helpful with our bookings and advice. The toilets at the train stations were very bad so be prepared. They do have toilets in the train.

On June 18, 2024, we boarded the Calypso Train at 8:30 AM from Badulla railway station. As Sri Lanka's newest rail marvel, the Calypso Train offers a scenic journey from Badulla to Bandarawela, passing through the picturesque Demodara area. It runs daily, providing a comfortable and stylish way to explore Sri Lanka's beautiful hill country. The fare is LKR 1000 for a one-way trip or LKR 2000 for a round trip. The train will stop at Demodara railway station and the famous Nine Arches Bridge. We can enjoy the stunning views from the open-air observation deck during our journey. Trip was a lovely way to experience a train in Sri Lanka, you were able to hang out the train and look at the lovely views in Ella!
HOWEVER, I paid £17 pound a ticket and bought two through trip advisor, DO NOT DO THIS! You can buy your ticket at one of the stations it goes to for £2.50 (1000 rupees) each for the exact same train and experience!

This is for who would like to book seats in advance and it costs higher than day tickets issuing through station's counter. Its more risky to wait and get seats in the station on the day as we have only few seats for this experience and its getting booked quickly.
And of course the price you are paying is higher than the day tickets with un reserved seats provided by station counter. Because this is included taxes, service ccharges, early reservation charges etc...
If you are fit to stand travelling for 3-4 hours, we would recommend to get tickets on arrival in the station counter. Otherwise if you are a family with kids, or would like to have reserved seats, highly recommend to book in advance.
