This tour was everything we expected plus more! The tour operator Jackie picked us up as planned from the front of the Arras railway station in a very comfortable mini van for 8. We spent the whole day exploring the WW1 Somme Battlefields, and war cemeteries with an Australian & Commonwealth focus for this particular tour. Jackie's historic knowledge on these battles are outstanding. Having had a military background, her explanation on the intricacies of individual battles was exemplary. As we weren't in a rush to get back to Arras for connecting transport, she went overtime by giving us a little bit more. We'd thoroughly recommend this tour to anyone that's interested in a detailed account of WW1 Somme Battlefields.

Had a great Somme day tour with Jackie. Punctual pick up and drop off. Jackie's knowledge definitely enhanced the enjoyment of the tour despite the wet and windy weather on the day. Would recommend without any hesitation. Rod.

We booked this tour because, as Australians, we wanted to see the Sir John Monash Centre and the School museum at Villers-Bretonneux. I also knew that John Monash had a great reputation in Australia. These three things were interesting on the tour, but it was all the other features of the tour that made it superb. It was the information that Jackie gave us that made this tour exceptional. She summarised the causes of WW1 as soon as we were in the van with the other 6 guests. Jackie explained the geography, the climate, showed us trenches and explained their design. She explained the design of barbed wire and the differences with the German design. we learnt about the first use of tanks in warfare. She taught us about tunnel building and how it differed with types of soil. She showed us the crater from a bomb exploded under the enemy from the tunnel. We learnt about the German experience and what they were thinking. We learnt about the effect on the local French people and how they coped after they fled from the battle scene.
She showed us where a Roman road was still visible in 1916 and used as a land mark.
There was a lot more. The day was jam packed with information, which is what I like.
I particularly liked the way Jackie could assess us as Australians who did not want a false glamorous picture of how heroic our country was compared to everyone else. Jackie had the confidence to give a much more realistic explanation of our countries role which was one of many.

Firstly I would like to thank Rod and Jackie for everything they did to accommodate us, they could not have been more helpful, we are very grateful.
This is truly a day our family will never forget. We were travelling with our 23 and 18 yr old sons and as a family we all wanted to do a tour like this to learn more about what happened in WW1 and WW2 and as Australians we had a real interest in learning more about the battles the Australians were involved in. Spending the day with Rod was such a privilege. He is such a wealth of knowledge and was happy to answer all our questions. We could not believe how much we learnt. Our boys loved it and so did we. Such a moving and special day and with Rods retelling of things, we were really able to get an understanding of the horrible hardships the soldiers went through. We can't say enough how much we would recommend doing this tour. Thank you Rod and Jackie from the Lakin Family.

What a fabulous tour. Oliver was a font of knowledge and took us on a totally unforgettable day around the Somme Battlefields. We learned a lot about the Great War that we didn't already know. We found the grave of a family friend and learned where and how he died - invaluable for his family. We were surprised and touched by the relationship between France and Australia, in particular with the village of Villers-Bretonneux. So many memorials to all the countries who participated in the war - those and the war cemeteries are maintained beautifully and with total respect. We highly recommend this tour.

This tour was absolutely incredible. Rod has the perfect background (military) and intense knowledge to not only convey the key points but also the important subtleties and details of the various sites visited. He also does a good mix of individual stories to bring the battlefield to life. I have already recommended this tour to friends.

This was a Christmas present for my father who has a great interest in the subject. Rod’s knowledge was exceptional and Dad learnt a few new things! We’d originally booked just the half day tour but were so thirsty for more information we upgraded to stay for the full day. Definitely recommend.

We were lucky to have expert guide Rod for our Somme tour as his in-depth knowledge and passion makes it a very special experience!! He tailored the tour to our Aussie/Kiwi interests and we learnt so
much about the battles thanks to Rod’s breadth and depth of the events in WW1. Would recommend the tour as a great day and well run tour experience 👍

Went on the battle of the Somme guided day by The Battlefields Experience. My guide was Rod. Luckily I was the only one booked on the tour so was picked up at my hotel. Rod has a wealth of knowledge about the Somme and gave some really interesting facts. This role was definitely suited to him.
We visited Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial, Ulster Memorial Tower, Thivepal Monument and a few other places. I also saw where my great grandfather fought at Dewdrop Trenches.
I would highly recommend The Battlefields Experience as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Rod & Jackie.

Hello there - I am emailing from NZ. We are combining the Rugby World Cup with a deep seated desire to see where our great grandparents fought. Your trip is so well recommended. The trouble is I can't seem to make the dates work. We arrive in Arras on Friday 6th October from Lyon and leave Tuesday 10th October. Online there does not seem to be any availability for the tours on the 7,8, or 9th October. Is that correct? Is there any possibility of doing a tour on one of the above dates?
