We had three great days in Tortuguero with Exploradores Outdoors!
Unfortunately our backpack was damaged by mice at the depot. Exploradores Outdoors responded immediately and compensated us for the damage. We had not expected it at all. Really very accommodating and customer friendly!

No nos gustó la gestión de Exploradores Outdoors. La experiencia una vez llegamos a Tortuguero fue inmejorable, pero la gestionaba otra empresa.
Por lo que respecta a Exploradores, ellos se encargaron básicamente del transporte. En primer lugar, el recorrido de San José a Tortuguero es mucho más largo con ellos porque te desvían a su centro de Siquirres y allí te hacen cambiar de bus, te dejan en Caño Blanco y de allí se coge el bote a Tortuguero (unas 5 horas en total). En cambio, si eliges realizar el transporte con otra empresa, un shuttle de San José a La Pavona y el bote, son unas 3 horas aproximadamente.
La experiencia fue mala sobretodo a la vuelta, nos hicieron cambiar de bus 4 veces, cambiando las maletas de un bus a otro, con el temor de tener que estar atento en todo momento de que no se olvidaran de tus pertenencias. Al llegar a San José y empezar a hacer la ruta por los distintos hoteles, para nuestro asombro, volvieron a hacer cambios de bus de nuevo. Un grupo de turistas decidió bajarse y pagar un taxi… La verdad que no lo recomendamos, no es nada práctico en cuanto al recorrido y, sobretodo, por la mala gestión y los constantes cambios. No tenemos nada negativo en cuanto a los conductores, que eran personas amables y dispuestas, pero al final la mala gestión de la empresa nos hizo tener una mala experiencia. No lo recomendamos.

The service was amazing and we came back with many memories. The transport was on time, although at times packed (all seats full, including those in the aisle). Our guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The activities were all fantastic and the lodging very nice, even the inexpensive option. I highly recommend the canoe tour, the city and National Park tour, and the turtle tour.

We had a fantastic time. We were especially impressed with our guides at Tortuguero Village. I think it was Eric? who took us on the most amazing tour of the village in which we saw everything from spider monkeys to medicinal plants. I never imagined that a simple walk around a small village would be so mind-blowing. Then our guide Abel who took us out in the canoe, and later on foot through the jungle was also really good. We saw so much, and he is a nice relaxed and interesting person as well. My number one tip is to bring cash with you to Tortuguero village. Only a few places take cards, so you will be buying food, drinks, tips, handicrafts, etc. all with cash. We were really limited because we hadn't brought much cash with us.

Tortuguero is beautiful. The town is lovely, the boat and canoe trip in the river and the walk through the National Park is wonderful, with a good number of animal sightings. The hotel is comfortable. Our guide Isaac on the canoe was especially knowledgable.
That said, the transport is not well organised at all for those that are not rafting. This company organises rafting, as well as onward transport to La Fortuna, San Jose and Puerto Viejo. They have a 'centre' at Siquirres, right by the rafting. Whether or not it makes sense for your trip, they bring everyone from San Jose to this centre and then you board another bus to Tortuguero. Same when you're coming back from Tortuguero. İt means you drive the complete wrong direction, wait for people to finish rafting, wait over an hour at this centre where they tell you lunch is USD10, then get on another bus to go back towards San Jose.
İf you don't want this trip to steal at least 2 hours of your life each way, I suggest you seek a different company with actual direct transport to Tortuguero.

Tortuguero war super cool, die Tour war gut organisiert, die Unterkunft war schön, karibisch mit Bar und Pool. Es war warm und die Guides waren alle engagiert und hatten Spaß an dem, was sie taten. Die Bootstour war super am frühen Morgen und Abel (oder Ebel oder Able), unser Tourguide, hat alles ermöglicht, was ging und uns viele Tiere gezeigt, die rund um die Insel leben. Die Nachtwanderung haben wir extra gebucht und die war so schön und wir haben kurz vor dem Ende unserer Reise endlich Faultiere gesehen, sogar gleich drei verschiedene. Danke an Abel, der so viele Tiergeräusche nachahmen kann und tatsächlich alle unsere Wünsche erfüllen konnte, was wir noch sehen wollten.

Das Abholen beim Hotel hat wie die gesamte Reise sehr gut geklappt. Leckeres Frühstück gab es in Siquirres, zusammen mit der Mehrheit der Reisenden, die anschliessend auf dem Pacuare raften gingen. Wir wurden mit einem Van nach Caño Blanco gefahren, wo ein kleines aber schnelles Boot auf uns wartete. In Tortuguero angekommen, wurden wir an der Bootsanlagestelle abgeholt und zur Unterkunft begleitet (war sogar eine bessere Unterkunft als gebucht - diejenige, die angeblich keinen Platz mehr hatte). Die eingeschlossenen Aktivitäten (Dorfrundgang, morgendliche Kanufahrt, Wanderung im Nationalpark) wurden von hervorragenden Guides geleitet. Die Kanufahrt konnten wir als kleine Gruppe durch eine Kajakfahrt ersetzen. In der freien Zeit ist es möglich, weitere Ausflüge zu buchen, z.B. einen Nachtspaziergang. Auch für die Rückfahrt wurde ich bis zum richtigen Boot begleitet und in Caño Blanco erwartet. Diesmal reiste ich mit einem Boot, das auch Einheimische nutzten und das unterwegs doch einige Stopps einlegte. Die verlorene Zeit versuchte der Fahrer des Vans dann auf abenteuerliche Weise wieder einzuholen. Beim Umsteigen in einen anderen Van vergass ich 2 Dinge, die ich tags darauf in La Fortuna wieder in Empfang nehmen konnte - toller Service!
