Not what we expected. Very disappointed as the first thing the Viking told us was 'Vikings are not real they never existed' he then gave us a history lecture for almost an hour. We then had around 10 minutes left to look around before boarding the boat.
We were expecting to be immersed into a viking family and as much as Tim was informative he was boring and lost our group with the idea vikings didnt exist!

We're terribly sorry that you did not have a good experience at the Viking Farm.
We have discussed the points you raised with the Viking Farm managers - both in terms of the guide and the timing - to ensure corrective action.
The Viking Farm is absolutely the place to be immersed in the Viking way of life which is what we would like all our guests to experience.

My friends and I came off the Iona and booked a trip to the Viking Village £160 per couple an utter waste off money. I have written to the company twice to complain and they haven’t got the decency to reply. Please please don’t waste your hard earned money.

We are terribly sorry that you feel your tour was not value for money. This is a tour that is a unique and wonderful family experience. We continue to adjust and improve all our tours to ensure that our guests have the best possible time, and that they do indeed feel that it was money well spent.

This is quite long but I hope Viking Adventure read it because hopefully it is a constructive review.
The excursion wasn't really what we had expected to be honest. When we arrived at Bukkøy we were greeted by an enthusiastic and funny Shaman who welcomed the group which was a good start. We then split into two groups, one went with the shaman and we went with the VA guide to the impressive boathouse. After a little while in there we walked up to the village gate. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny but didn't project his voice very well which wasn't ideal if you were near the back of the group. I also thought he would be giving us more engaging info about the village itself but once we'd heard the basics, he just seemed to be making it up on the spot, even telling us about his family in the UK (fine, but not what we'd paid for).
We then swapped guides and the shaman took us up to the longhouse. We had a look inside and then he delivered his excellent talk about the village and the way of life in Iron Age/Early Medieval times. After that it was time to go, before we'd even had chance to explore the village or the area. Quite disappointing as it was only about 13:05 and we were supposed to be on the island until around 13:30.
I know Norway is expensive but we really expected a lot more for what we paid (around £150 per adult!). As a history and archaeology fan I found the place interesting at least, but my wife felt very short changed and there wasn't much at all for our 2 year old to do while there.
The place would be brilliant if you were able to walk around for an hour or so, explore, and meet different characters of the village who could talk you through different areas (a craftsman, a woman of the household, a farmer, a couple of guards?) but sadly it leaves a lot to be desired. They could make it an incredible experience with some more engaging features and I hope one day this is the case.
Pros:
- The Shaman carried the show. Very likeable guide, extremely knowledgeable and passionate
- Bukkøy itself is a really beautiful little island
- The buildings themselves and architecture, for a history fan, is 100% authentic and looks fantastic
Cons:
- The Shaman was the only really engaging part of the experience.
- We left a good 15-20 mins earlier than advertised. We would have loved to explore the island more and walk through the woods, and our son would have enjoyed that too
- Not exactly the bustling living history centre it appears to be on the website and advertising imagery
- There just needs to be more for the average non-history-enthusiast visitor. To say they can run 2 trips of 40-50 passengers in a day, at £150 per adult, there has to be room in the budget for more actors/guides.
As a final disclaimer I would say that I'm not actually sure who is responsible for what between the Avaldsnes museum and Viking Adventure. Maybe VA only run the ferries and have no say in the running of the village, I'm not sure, but something needs to be done to make this the amazing family experience it could be!

Very very overpriced for what it is. There is no way it is a 3 hour plus excursion, most of the time is spent waiting around at the farm for a tour guide. 25 minute boat trip to the island farm, 30 minutes is long enough to see the farm and 25 minutes back. It is not a good trip and definitely not good value for the price.

We feel sorry for your experience regarding this tour to the Viking Farm.
This was our first tour for the season and we have to admit that we was not prepared for the massive crowd when Iona arrived Haugesund with more than 4000 guests. We appreciate your review and will take this with us in the operation for the next tours. Please contact us if you come back in another occasion and we hope to give you a better experience.
