We really enjoyed this tour, the young volley baller who guided us around was very informative and full of information. We even managed a photo with Kieren Perkins. I would highly recommend!!!!

A great place to be at if you are visiting Canberra. Our tour guide explained about the different buildings, which was very descriptive. We even got to see Aussie athletes training. Sadly, Sportex disappointed me as there were limited games and it was very small.

We completed a tour with some lovely young athletes and were surprised by the size of the facility. You can also go lap swimming (not water play).

Very good to gain insights on the workings of the AIS. The Sportec (?) simulation machines are getting a little dated and need some maintenance.

What an incredible morning tour. Mali Towers 18. (Volleyball) was able to take us around and give us an insight into the grounds, their history, the facilities and was able to answer our many questions. Emilija Dakic U17 Saphires (basketball) later joined us. It was great to get an insight of what a usual day for these elite athletes. Thankyou AIS.

The AIS is sadly a white elephant. An amazing sports complex that was built to counter Australia's poor showing at the Montreal Olympics (1976) when the Australian team failed to collect a gold medal it is now sadly in need of love, attention and a cash injection which will unfortunately never come.
Up until 2013, the AIS offered scholarships to athletes across 36 programs in 26 different sports. After that the national sports funding model has meant that sports have moved away from Canberra to Western Australia, and Queensland and the centre is now a shadow of its former self.
That's not to say that the AIS isn't worth visiting. The Sportex centre is a series of virtual sports simulators designed to test your reactions, row or ride a bike or see how long you can balance for. It's a fun centre and ideal for kids and teenagers.
The tours are well conducted and informative and it's a nice setting. The cafe and gift shop are also pretty good.
What's sad about the facility is that it's slowly decaying. The pool is clean and bright, but no longer state of the art, the same with the arena and nearby Canberra Stadium which still hosts the Brumbies and Raiders is a functional but out-dated stadium.
Ultimately the AIS will gradually decline, the facilities are too expensive to bulldoze now (in 2024) but in a decade or so the ACT government will do a swap-deal with the federal government (who are the landlords of the site) and build houses on the site (which is on good road networks). Until then take a trip to see what was (albeit temporarily) the home of Australia's sporting success.

It was an amazing experience. The games area for the first half was so much fun, everyone loved it. The tour was great, and our tour guide could answer all of our questions. I would definitely recommend going here if you visit Canberra.

Our guide Will was fantastic! He was so informative and yet so interested in our comments and experiences. Even took the time to have a coffee with us after the tour. We wish Will all the best for his future volley ball career.

Our exceptionally good value tour of the AIS provided wonderful insights into the lives and demands on our elite sportspeople. Although there were only two of us the full tour went ahead with Volleyroo Will Kay as our personal guide. Thanks Will for a great morning - undoubtedly one of the highlights of our Canberra visit.
