As a certified diver since 1988, my dream has been to dive at the Great Barrier Reef. While planning a once in a lifetime trip to Australia, I had to go to Cairns to fulfill my dream. After doing some research, I booked and paid for a day of diving with Seastar Cruise on Friday, January 27, 2023 for two dives on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
Leading up to the dive, I reached out on several occasions to confirm our reservation. I even reached out two days prior to our planned dive to confirm.
On the morning of Monday, May 15, 2023, my family and I departed Melbourne for our flight to Cairns. When we landed in Cairns, I was so excited that I was going to fulfill my lifelong dream of diving at the Great Barrier Reef. Unfortunately, 20 minutes after our plane landed in Cairns, I received an impersonal email from Seastar cancelling our dive for the next day due to mechanical issues.
I understand that issues arise, but their email was so impersonal. In addition, they didn't offer any solutions or alternatives. Seastar could have and should have tried to reach out to other dive shops in Cairns to see any of the other operations would have availability for 3 divers. As a result, I spent hours contacting other dive shops to ensure that we would be able to actually get out on the Great Barrier Reef.
As someone traveling from the United States to fulfill a lifelong dream, I found Seastar to be a cold, unresponsive and unappreciative organization.
I will say that they did reimburse me for the trip, but I ended up losing money due to the conversion rate. I personally will NEVER use this company.

Thank you for your feedback, we apologize for the poor experience. During your booked date we did have an unexpected mechanical issue and had to put the boat under maintenance. We tried to alert everyone of this change as soon as possible and sent out alternative options to book. We hope you were able to fulfill your lifelong dream.

It was raining on the day we took our trip. We were greeted by Captain Mike and checked in. We were fitted for our fins, wetsuits, and prescription masks. We were offered tea or coffee.
Mike came around to everyone and told us to be sure to take some Dramamine or similar because it was going to be rough. Although my husband and I took some, my husband (who struggles with motion sickness) was sick 4 times on the bumpy 1.5-hour ride out to the cove. However, the staff of this boat is beyond excellent. There was someone with him on the back of the boat the whole time - so kind.
The snorkeling at the first cove is unbelievable - and this was not a great day, they said. I am a nervous person in the water and Darcy put me on the safety ring and literally towed me around the cove so I could see everything (we were even one of the few to see a giant sea turtle). Her patience is unmatched!
I even got picked up on the island and brought back to the boat, so I didn't have to swim back. One woman rode in the glass bottom boat and taken through the reef.
Lunch was delicious. Chicken wings, potato/cheese/squash bake, pasta salad, quinoa salad, regular salad, and an assortment of rolls/bread.
We headed to the 2nd cove and the weather got rougher. The wind picked up a lot.
The 2nd cove had some large swells, but the staff were so good to guide people and check on them. My husband said the giant clam shells were unreal. But no one stayed out too long - it was too hard.
They served us fruit and cakes before heading back a little early. Tim gave a great talk on the reef, explaining different coral and fish as well as restoration taking place.
The boat ride back was like riding the bumpiest rollercoaster ever made - for over an hour. My husband was super sick and Darcy stayed with him the whole time. He hated he was the only one to get sick - but couldn't do much about it.
Even with the weather, I couldn't more highly recommend this trip, especially Captain Mike and his crew (shoutouts to Darcy, Archie, Tim, and Michael).

Fantastic and well organized excursion. We did not think it would be this convenient to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef but Seastar made it so easy and enjoyable. LOVED the Giant Clams. The Reef is simply amazing. Great lunch too.

Small group size is a bonus. Friendly helpful team. Excellent reef spots with incredible snorkelling. My partner was able to have a very reasonably priced introductory scuba dive (he has no previous scuba experience) and snorkel at both spots. Around 4h snorkelling time. Good lunch and snacks. Highly recommend.

This was an excellent day!
What worked well
- instructions to find the boat were clear
- Good on board was catered really really well and great for vegetarians
- The diving instructor tim was amazing / made me feel comfortable for my first dive
- The skipper was chatty / friendly
- Not too large a boat which was great!
What could be better
- the cost was relatively higher compared to other boats once you paid for additional diving (and had to pay per each dive) and it wasn’t clear how much this would cost before I booked - generally I would prefer to know the total cost but it was worth it for the day / the instructor etc was great!

I begin by the warm welcome by the Skipper Matt and the rest of the crew.
One of the Big advantage of this tour is tha t is a relatively small tour (about 30) wich makes everything more friendly and familiary.The boat travells at a good speed so it doesn’t take to long to arrive at the first spot in Michaelms Bay a sand Island. Everything is well organized so it flows very well. Go for snorkelling or diving but either way the crew is on the water to help and guide us for a tour in the best spots of the Reef with no rush. Time for a lunch and then we go to the second dive. All goes the same way with 2 hours for snorkelling and then return
At the end you get a complimentary photos of the day at the Facebook site of the company

My husband and I loved this tour! The water was very calm and the snorkeling was incredible. We really enjoyed the trip to the bird island as well. Everyone working on the boat was very helpful and we felt safe the entire time. Highly recommend!

Hot drink included at lunch. Chicken, sliced salami and ham. Italian pasta salad coleslaw, potato salad, bread and butter. Cake. I don't eat meat but the 3 different salads and cake was yummy. Extra coffee and drinks are charged

Do you have to wear a wetsuit whilst snorkeling?

During the stinger season (generally November to May) you have to wear a stinger suit (tight Lycra). Outside of this time you do not, unless you want something to keep you warmer if you’re prone to a chill. Or if you want some extra sun protection.

It depends on the 7 year old whether it's suitable for him. When we went on this cruise there were young children who seemed to enjoy the experience and handled it well.

It was not an issue to snorkel. The only issue was with scuba diving becuase I had surgery 13 years ago (which has no impact on my diving.) They didn't tell me this was an issue until we were on the boat.

It’s still worth it. It rained on us for a little bit while we were snorkeling at Michaelmas Cay, but 20 minutes later, sun was peaking out. The weather is very fluid there, Hastings Reef was better, but turtles were at the Cay. Since you only have 2 days, you might do Day 1. You might love it so much you go day 2 as well. Also, if you want your picture taken holding a koala bear, go to the Reef Casino in Cairns. They have an option for $25 without having to pay for full Dome experience.

I’m sure you’d be fine. If you’re heavily pregnant, then maybe avoid the upper deck and the stairs out onto the bow, but there’s a perfectly comfortable lounge/bar area where you’d be ok for sure.
