Great trip, well worth it. The views and tunnels are amazing and the bridges over the gorges are breath taking. Sit either side as views same same each side. You can take your own food, and drinks, just no alcohol allowed to be consumed as it is a licensed premises, the train that is.

My mum wanted to go on this trip for her birthday so i treated us to the scenic plus package and it was worth every cent. I have worked in the hospitality industry for 10 years and the staffs service was top notch. The extra touches of the warm towel, welcome package with the postcard and the illustrated book with points of interest along our journey was well received. Throughout the trip we were well fed with plenty of food and both hot and cold drinks. This trip is something you would only do once so the scenic plus package is well worth the splurge.

The whole experience was just fantastic. Our Matrie D Toni was so attentive and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. She also shared lots of stories and her passion for the job and her customers showed and it was felt by the 3 of us in the group. Thsnk you Toni for making us feel so comfortable and welcoming on our Tranz Alpine experience. We were served breakfast and lunch and both were delicious and very tasty. Very happy customers

We took the train from Christchurch to Greymouth and upgraded to Scenic Plus and it was one of the best things we did in our whole six weeks in New Zealand. The service from the moment we rolled out of Christchurch was excellent. The food was delicious. Cannot fault it at all. The commentary provided via headphones during the trip was informative and entertaining. We were sad to leave the train in Greymouth - we wanted to go back and see all the magnificent scenery again!

The Tranz Alpine Rail is a very relaxing way to cross New Zealand.
My husband and I boarded in Christchurch about 8am heading for Greymouth. There is a cafe car providing a variety of items for breakfast, lunch and snacks.
Regular commentary along the journey providing information about the local area and ensuring you see all the key views points.
The train is very clean, including bathrooms and staff are friendly and helpful.

Nice excursion with lovely hikes. This was a great way to explore the terrain, see beautiful waterfalls and learn more about the area. Our driver, AJ, was most helpful and went above and beyond to help us.

ScenicPlus ride from Greymouth to Christchurch was excellent today. Service on ScenicPlus exceeded my expectations, with the genuine NZ hospitality.

We caught the Tranz Alpine Express from Christchurch to Greymouth in November 2023. Wonderful trip, very comfortable with good audio on head phones. The dining car was great for cups of tea and scones. The scenery was spectacular, staff very pleasant, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The open car was so much fun and great for photography. Was worth the train fare. We did one way and then picked up cycles and rode from Greymouth to Ross over 4 days.
