We booked the Taieri Gorge Railways as a 'shore excursion' whilst travelling around New Zealand on a cruise ship.
We were extremely disappointed as it certainly did not represent value for money, costing $299.95 (Australian $'s) per person, noting that when the charters are not running to cost from Dunedin to Hindon and return is only $69.00 (New Zealand $'s).
Previously the rail journey went further but understand the loss of a bridge in a bushfire about 5 years ago means the train no longer operates to Pakuranga. We were not told this when booking, nor was it mentioned on the train journey.
We were in Car P, where the seating was uncomfortable and the air conditioning compromised because there are no curtains on the window to 'keep the sun out'.

The Taieri Gorge Limited train ride in Port Chalmers passes through numerous tunnels and valleys and ends at the town of Hindon. The train was built in 1879 for merchants to transport fruit, oil, and other things. This transport stopped in 1990, and the train today is mainly tourists. Only one home is in the area and those entering the home must be sure they “look both ways” when they cross over the tracks to the home. While our tour was a guided one, the noise from the train rails tended to drown out what the driver was saying.

A really enjoyable trip to Hindon. Opened up wonderful country to me - right on my doorstep. The staff on the train were attentive, and did everything with a smile and a good word. The commentator was great too - informative, relaxed and humorous. Great chicken pies also!

Purchased the Taieri Gorge trip as a Christmas gift for my hubby. We had a great time, the staff was friendly and the cafe had good food. Can’t wait to do the Sealander trip! So glad the trains are running again!

We booked the return trip from Dunedin to Pukerangi a couple of months in advance at $115 per adult and travelled in March 2020, prior to Covid-19 lockdown. The train departed at 9.00am and returned at 2.00pm.
We allowed ourselves plenty of time to park our car near the station which was fortunate as we only got a space after some circling then someone gave us the nod to indicate that they were departing. Parking was $5.50 for the day - credit cards accepted in the machine. I subsequently discovered there were other parking options nearby but wasn't aware of them at the time and had a moment of slight concern we'd miss the train. Best to research the possibilities in advance to avoid issues.
The train wasn't busy - we had checked online before booking to ensure that there were no cruise ships due in port that day. However in light of the restrictions on passengers disembarking ships due to coronovirus concerns it transpires this was not an issue at the time of travel.
The station is well worth a look around either prior to departure or on return as it is an attractive building. We had seen it on a previous visit to the city so didn't need to explore again. This time around it was good to be just boarding the Taieri Gorge train.
When we collected our tickets we were provided with a map of the journey which gave some facts and figures and was useful to monitor progress.
On board we were next to the buffet carriage so it was handy for refreshments - we got some sandwiches, coffees and even some wine which were all fine from a taste and cost point of view. Cash is required due to poor signal onboard for card transactions. The crew were pleasant.
During the trip commentary was provided which was audible in the carriage but not on the open platform where I found myself often, trying to take photographs.
There are parts of the journey which are less interesting especially nearest Dunedin however we found the scenery in and around the Gorge was worth seeing and on the return we were more prepared to snap those moments we had missed on the outbound journey. The train doesn't speed along so there are good opportunities to capture what you see on camera, although others are often trying to do the same thing, so patience and consideration are required. There were a few stops along the way - at Hinden (a station in the middle of nowhere nowadays), at Pukerangi itself (also off the beaten track) and on the return at Arthur's Knob so you can stretch your legs. It would have been great to get some photos of the train from the track at one of the bridges however I guess this wouldn't be feasible on health and safety grounds otherwise it would be done. The Wingatui Viaduct is eye-catching at 47 metres high.
Overall we enjoyed the trip and thought it was good value for money.

The Dunedin railway is great, maybe the food is not really. Good but is ok the most important is the experience.

Can you advise me please if the train can carry electric bikes and if so how many . Thanks
They do allow bikes so I suppose e-bikes could be carried too. You need to book in advance per their website (TA don't permit link but just google "Bike Transport Dunedin Railways").

Hi we arrived in Port Chalmers on 5th Dec. How do we get to Dunedin railway station? Is there any taxi available in Port Chalmers?
Generally there are shuttle buses and definitely taxis

We arrive by cruise ship 8.00 am on Thursday 12th December and sail out at 5.00 pm. Is there a morning Taieri Gorge tour that day?
Kia Ora Irene,
I believe the train goes every day. There is a shuttle going from the port to Dunedin Train Station that you can take.
Please let me know if you have any other questions,
Kind regards,
Dmitry

We arrive on February 29,2020 on Viking Orion at 9 am. We are trying to ascertain from Viking where the ship will dock (Dunedin or Port Chalmers). With 9 am arrival, can we make the 9:30 train? We do not want to be bused! Do you have a dock pick-up? On your calendar, not showing availability - is your calendar not updated or do the cruise lines have seats booked? At least 4 of us would like to go on this excursion, maybe as many as 14 of us. Thanks for your help!

Kia Ora guys. I live in Auckland and I will not be able to assist you with transportation from Port Chalmers to the train station. However I have a guide with the transport (6 seater) who may be able to help you. It takes about 25 min to get from the port to Railway Station. The only way for you to make it is to leave the ship earlier.
I have just spoken to the the booking office of the railways and they told me that you can catch the train from the port around 9AM. It will cost a little extra for extra leg. Again you need to check with Viking if you can disembark a little earlier.
Bon Voyage,
Dmitry

Why are all those dates in March and April 2020 not available on the booking site?
sorry I can not tell you but my guess is that may be a cruise ship that has bought all available seats. To get the correct answer try and get hold of the rail line and see what they have to say, I am sorry I have just returned from Queensland hence the lateness of reply

We will be arriving in Dunedin by cruise ship, is this trip viable with the ship docking times ? It looks gorgeous..
The whole trip takes about 4.5 hours so it depends on when your ship docks and leaves. The train leaves at 12.30pm from Dunedin Station on the current timetable so you should be back by 16.30pm. Tickets can be bought online to save time queuing at the station
What is the time the train departs for the morning tour and do we need to book prior or can we purchase tickets on the day ,,cheers
Train leaves at 9:30. You can purchase tickets at the station. You shouldn't need to purchase them in advance unless you are travelling during a high-volume tourist season.
