Milford Sound itself is a marvel. We had some patchy weather but the sun showed itself a few times and the fjords are incredible.
The cruise itself less so. We opted for the buffet lunch because we had minimal time between a morning kayak and the afternoon cruise. That was convenient, but we waited in line the first 30 minutes of the cruise and by the time we were done eating the cruise was half over.
As far as this being a "nature cruise", there was virtually no commentary on the geology or wildlife in the area. The cruise ship reached the Tasman Sea and immediately turned around. We saw a single seal. I appreciate wildlife is hard to guarantee, but feel they oversold the amount of wildlife we might see.
It was a huge boat with a lot of people that at times made you feel like cattle being shuffled around, or vying for deck space.
We did the Milford Sound the next day with another tour operator. Much better operation but hardly cost any more money. Smaller boat, better tour guide, much longer trip.

Great boat with plenty of space on the upper outside deck to watch the beautiful scenery. On the deck there are a few benches to sit on, although we were standing most of the time to see the views. Plenty of comfortable seats inside, although with limited views when seated in there.
Commentary was exactly what we needed: not too much, not too little, and at a comfortable but hearable volume.

Auf dem Schiff war es recht voll, aber abgesehen davon hat uns die Fahrt sehr gut gefallen. Man entdeckt Milford Sound und erfährt ein wenig über die Region. Draußen waren die Durchsagen und Informationen allerdings leider manchmal nicht so gut zu verstehen. Aber eine tolle Möglichkeit, um diese wunderschöne Region kennenzulernen!

De reis vanaf Te Anau richting de boot is prachtig. Een bergpas waarbij alle landschappen aan bod komen en de nodige tussenstops worden gemaakt.
Wij zijn met een splinternieuw cruise van de maatschappij op tocht gegaan. De omgeving is prachtig, echter kijk je vooral tegen achterhoofden van mensen aan. Het is duwen en trekken om een plekje aan de rand van de boot te bemachtigen voor een foto. Foto’s van de omgeving zonder mensen is een opgave…
Dit neemt de ervaring van de prachtige, serene omgeving compleet weg voor ons. Achteraf gezien hadden wij beter naar Doubtfull Sound kunnen gaan.

Fantastic value -- super informative and knowledgeable crew. Loved the explanations about the geology, ecology, and history of the Milford Sound. We got to see some Fiordland crested penguins and NZ fur seals, as well as some shags and gannets. Came on a sunny day, so a lot of the waterfalls had already dried up, but absolutely gorgeous nonetheless. Also appreciated that they provided complimentary hot tea and coffee on board.

We are unsure of why it is called a ‘nature’ cruise but it was a nicely paced loop of Milford Sound, with friendly staff and a commentary by the captain. With such stunning scenery you probably don’t need much more.

A fabulous experience! Great staff, determined to make the visit memorable. Brilliant day, basking seals, elusive fairy penguins, frolicking dolphins, majestic waterfalls, snow capped peaks- what more could you possibly want! Nature at its best!
