If you’ve not got the time, the energy or the interest in a three day hike carrying all your gear, this is the perfect way to experience a superb section of the Kepler Track.
The water taxi leaves from the centre of town, then drops you right in the middle of a superb pierce of the Kepler Track with ferns, forest and streams, just metres back from the lake.
You can then do a short walk and catch another boat back an hour later, or, walk to the Control Gates (about 90 minutes) and then either walk back to town or organise a bus or taxi, or keep walking, as we did, on to Rainbow Reach where a bus will collect you.
The section to the Control Gates is flat and wide and anyone can walk it, and even the section beyond here to Rainbow Reach has minimal elevation.
We’ve done this twice now and it’s a cheap, and wonderful day out.

Thanks for your review Stephen, good ideas there for how to day walk the Kepler Track. There are quite a few options and taking the Kepler Water Taxi means you don't have to walk back the way you came. Thanks again and see you soon!

Had a great experience taking the Kepler water taxi to start our 4 day Kepler tramp. The water taxi was on time and the staff member was super friendly. Would recommend this to anyway day walking or doing the full Kepler track!

We had a great experience with Fiordland Outdoor Co. We booked the Kepler water taxi with them, to save a bit of hiking time for our kids. It worked out great. They even delivered our tent to us two days later, so that we could camp at Brod Bay after two nights at Luxmore alpine hut, then picked us up from Brod Bay the following morning. Doing it this way, we didn't have to carry our tent to the hut and back down.

The Kepler Water Taxi service is operated by Fiordland Outdoors, a small family-run company. The boat sets off only if there are more than two people who want to go across the lake so we recommend that you book ahead (even that same morning is fine) so that they know if anyone is going to show up.
The boat is a small blue-and-white vessel that ties up a few meters north of the Real NZ (Glow worms) dock. A one-way ride from Te Anau across to Brod Bay is NZD 25 per adult. Pay when you get on the boat, either in cash or using a credit card. We were coming back that afternoon so paid for the round-trip ticket which costs NZD 50.
Mike, the skipper, is great. He is very laid back, professional, super friendly, and an interesting person who genuinely wants you to have an enjoyable day. He is full of fascinating knowledge about the area and on our crossing we chatted about local preservation and conservation efforts. He even kindly switched the electronic map over to the echo-sounder display so that we could see changes in the lake depth.
The ride across the lake is really fun and takes only about ten minutes. You get dropped off on the beach at the Brod Bay camping area, where there are toilets.
If you are doing the Brod Bay to Luxmore Hut walking track as a day hike (which is spectacular and highly recommended!), make sure to keep an eye on the time - Mike comes back to the Broad Bay beach at exactly 4:30pm for the return trip to Te Anau. Do not be late otherwise you will miss the boat and must walk for 3 hours all the way around the lake to get back to town! Before backing away from the beach on our return trip, Mike made sure that there were no stragglers appearing at the water's edge. And, even as we set off across the lake, he kept looking over his shoulder to scan the beach for possible late-comers. That kind of thoughtfulness is really appreciated. Overall, the Kepler Water Taxi is a great way to start and end the Brod Bay to Luxmore Hut walk.
Lastly, on Tripadvisor, there seem to be two parallel sets of reviews for the same water taxi service: one for "Kepler Track Water Taxi" and a separate one for "Kepler Water Taxi", but with different reviews in each. That's really confusing and we recommend that the company owner works with Tripadvisor to consolidate the two entries.

A highlight of the week in Aotearoa New Zealand was day hiking up to the Luxmore Hut and back. Kepler Water Taxi and Fiordland Outdoors made it possible. They helped me plan beforehand and the service was great. Thank you!

Fiordland Outdoors were brilliant to deal with on our recent adventure. We caught their water taxi before heading up to Luxmore Hut on the Kepler track. Very professional but still friendly which helped my daughters feel safe on our trip across the lake. Cheers guys!

What a joy to have the water taxi waiting for us on the beach with the stairs down ready to climb aboard and head back to Te Anau for brunch. Just the best way to finish the Kepler track. So reliable and professional.
