A once in a lifetime experience, can't even describe it; you just have to do it. It ended with an amazing lunch and party punch.

Did the ATM Cave with Belize Caving Expeditions. Pick up was on time, vehicle was big enough for our group and comfortable. Drive was as expected with a stop at grocery store for snacks and potty.
Once at ATM, they took care of entrance fee/permits, of course part of their tour fee to us. They oriented us in what to expect and then we took off on our jungle and cave adventure. We walked maybe 25-30 minutes. Eduardo, our guide, explained flora and fauna and some old Mayan structure we walked past.
The hike was easy with a couple of shallow river crossings. I suggest tennis shoes and not “water sports shoes” like I had.
At the mouth of the cave you swim open water for maybe 12-15 yards. It’s deep so you got to swim.
The walk can be strenuous and the rock scrambling can get gnarly. If you have issues moving around, bad hips, bad knees and get tired easily and can’t last a 3-4 mile hike, don’t do it.
You will wade through waist to neck deep water, scramble around and over big rocks and rocky structure. Some of this, towards the end, is done barefoot or just wearing socks.
The journey to the deepest end is awesome but the final 200-300 yards (barefoot) hold the Mayan ceremony sites where you will see pottery and other artifacts plus several human remains. Please be respectful of these Mayan artifacts and remains, they are not covered or guarded, please don’t loot, your ticket does not give you the right to harm Belize’s legacy and heritage.
No cameras, no phones allowed inside the cave. Leave those at the van, it’s perfectly safe.
The journey back to the van covers the same route but it feels totally different. Enjoy the open water swim, it’s the best!
Food and drinks await you on your return. I suggest you change into dry clothes before you eat. Good facilities are available to change and go to the restroom.
The way back to your hotel is quieter but just because your tired. BC Exp folks will answer your questions from ATM to Mennonite farming practices.
Totally recommend the ATM Cave but most important, hire Belize Caving Expeditions to guide you.

We arranged Tikal and ATM tours with BCE plus transport to and from Belize City to San Ignacio. The whole team is awesome and a special shout out to Marconi (aka Baloo!) for a great experience. the guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. Some of my family members are not great swimmers, but they were very patient and helpful when navigating the ATM cave. They even fit in a trip to the zoo on the way back from San Ignacio to Belize City.

A once in a lifetime experience! The physical challenge combined with the archaeological history and cultural knowledge make this an unforgettable time. You get to river swim and wade, cave swim and wade, climb cave rocks and slide down them, and see the most amazing artifacts and remains. What an honor. Our guide was good - knowledgeable and fun. Lunch after was delicious. Pick up and drop off was smooth (even if there were a lot of stops to get folks). Recommend a good breakfast (you don’t eat until close to 2), some snacks for the ride or cash for the store, keens or tennis shoes, clothes you want to get wet and adventure in, and a change of clothes + towel for after. Don’t plan to bring anything into the cave - just you and the memories.

The trip itself was incredible. Thrilling, intriguing and a little challenging. Definity a cool way to spend a day.
My only feedback is that going as a solo traveler created a bit of an issue as the group sizes cap out at 8 and most people were in pairs. I got shuffled from group to group until I was paired with another solo traveler. Not ideal. So if possible go in a pair!

Went with Belize caving adventures but it doesn’t really matter who you use. Once you get to the start they divide you up so each guide has equal guests and no more than 8. Wear quick dry shorts or pants. They don’t allow bikini bottoms. Great lunch afterwards but it’s not until you finish so plan accordingly. So much fun hiking, crossing rivers and then wading through the cave.

This is an amazing must-do activity if you're in Belize. We thought it may be a bit touristy and over-rated but could not have been proven more wrong!
Our guide Fernando was extremely knowledgeable and fun to travel through the cave with. Even with a group of 8 this felt like a very intimate tour and he catered to all of us.

The tour guides were fantastic! My spouse and I did this together, and for him it was perfect. There was a lot of rock climbing, and for me my anxiety was very high. The guides were very patient and helped me through it all. We were also lucky to be doing the tour with another group who helped and didn’t make us feel rushed. The guides were very knowledgeable about the history. We almost wore hiking sandals, but one recommended against it and I was so glad we changed. Closed toed shoes were definitely best. I would definitely recommend this to our more adventurous friends/family.
