Oh my gosh, this was the most amazing experience ever! My 13 year old could not stop laughing and gasping at our experience with the Manta Rays at night! In my videos I could hear his exhilaration! He told me afterward that was the best thing he's ever done. Sea Quest was very organized with the check in, ensuring we had wet suits that fit, making sure we understood the safety measures and were very organized and incredibly friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome! We were so lucky to have such a memorable experience with many Manta Rays doing flips and feeding on the plankton right in front of us, I mean that literally, like 2 inches from my face! Our captain, Nick, let us know that our experience was exceptional on this night. While they see rays on most nights, there is always a risk of not seeing any, so we felt so lucky to have had so many feeding right in front of us, and they were huge and beautiful! The boat ride was about 5 minutes to the feeding spot and the captain and crew were very organized in getting us onto the boat, giving us the safety spiel, and getting us into and out of the water safely. We spent about 45 minutes in the water viewing the rays. It got a bit cold for me (a Tucsonan with thin blood) but about the time my arms were starting to get tired from hanging onto the viewing board, and I was getting a bit chilled, they told us we had 5 minutes left, so they obviously have done this enough to know how long people need to have an excellent experience without it getting uncomfortable. It really was an experience of a lifetime and we'd definitely recommend this company over and over again to anyone.

My friend and I went May 16th 2023 on the 7:15 trip. We had high hopes, but the experience far exceeded our expectations. We saw Manta’s almost uninterrupted the entire time we were in the water, as many as five at a time. I was using my GoPro and captured about 17 minutes of stunning video. As you may have read they come within inches, and do multiple barrel rolls in front of you. We were very glad that we chose Sea Quest from several other operators that we interviewed. They have it together, everyone was professional, friendly and patient. Very safety and comfort conscious. We had Captain John and a great group of about five in the water guides. There two a night trips each night of the week, also made it easy to book on short notice. Highly recommended

Night snorkeling with Mantas is a very unique experience in Big Island Hawaii, not sure if you will find anywhere else, and should not be missed. I did it 10 years ago, I think I went with Fairwinds by then, and this time I decided to bring my teens with me, all good swimmers etc. Seaquest had availabilities on good time slot, so we decided to give a shot. I had a very good experience with Seaquest for the Kealakekua Bay tour 10 years ago, so I thought we should have no issues. This time it was no different. They have all the check ins streamlined, you wait in their sitting area, are given the snorkeling gear and can use their change room and bathroom, although it will probably have a line. Absolutely no issues, they even get you some refreshments, like snacks and hot chocolate after the ride.
To be fair, I think the experience for snorkeling with Mantas would be the very similar with any other outfit operating in the area. This area, located in front of the Outrigger (used to be the Sheraton) is called Manta Village and its home to several other operators. Most of reviews of tours in Manta Village are positive, probably due to the high rates of Manta sightings, I read somewhere that a visitor can sight 4 manta rays on average per trip. Our trip was not the best, it took about 40 minutes to have the first or second sighting, but in the last 10 minutes, we had 3 mantas swimming at touching distance from us. Make sure you attach your go-pros properly - I had to do it with one hand while the other is holding the floaters, and a bit worried that the camera may drop (you don't want that to happen).
This is a very unique experience, and very accessible to the average tourist. It is unmissible in my opinion.

We loved this experience! We had John as our main tour guide and he was amazing. The water was a little choppy the night we went out, AND despite taking Dramamine an hour before and such a short boat ride, I still got very sick about halfway through the excursion. I have a tendency to get motion sick, so this was nothing new for me. But what WAS a pleasant surprise for me was the total kindness I received from the entire crew. I am used to being sick on excursions like this and having it almost seem like an inconvenience to the staff and crew. (I’ve gotten sick while skydiving, swimming with sharks, on snorkel excursions- I think my days of wild adventures are over haha!) But that was not the case at all! John and the other boat staff (I forget all their names), were SO kind when I returned back to the boat early. They offered me water and just chatted with me while I puked off the side of the boat (haha). My husband was able to complete the whole manta swim and had the best experience! We both loved it, and it was so cool to swim with the manta rays!! The cookies and drinks upon returning back were a nice touch. Loved the whole company- everyone we spoke with was amazing. And the excursion itself was awesome. 10/10 recommend.

Highly recommend the Night Manta Experience!!! Sea Quest employees were excellent - you check in at the gift shop, they fit you with wet suits, then you go on a 5 minute boat ride to the location instead of a 25 minute boat ride like many of their competitors. They stop in front on the very well lit Outrigger Hotel (so you aren't in the middle of the dark ocean!) The crew are very helpful getting all the guests into position around the light board with your feet up on noodles so you won't disturb the mantas who swim right under you to eat the plankton that's attracted to the light. The crew also educates you about the mantas as they are barrel rolling beneath you. It is a must-do experience! Note - the water is cold so if you want to bring a full wetsuit with you, I highly recommend it because the one they give you is short. Also, bring an underwater camera because you will want to remember this experience forever!

This was an awesome adventure! We saw many manta rays! The crew took great care of us. I highly recommend a go pro which you can rent from them. The hot chocolate and cookies at the end was a welcome treat!

Great opportunity to see manta rays up close. Snorkelers hold onto a raft with a light that attracts small creatures that are a favorite food of manta rays. The manta rays, who are filter feeders, swim up to the raft with the light and come within inches of the snorkelers. I have done this twice and both times we saw several manta rays up close. Note that those that are prone to seasickness might have issues. The short boat ride can be rough and there is a lot of motion when hanging onto the raft if the seas are rough. A couple of people on our tour did become ill.

VERY DISAPPOINTED by their policy after two days off no rays. The trip was a dud TWO nights in a row. We had taken the tour on 4/13/2023 and the trip was a 45min snorkeling of just boring fish (the same kind of silver fish). Not a single Manta Ray was seen. They rebooked us with their “manta-guarantee” for the next night. Half the people on the tour with us either couldn’t book a tour because they were only staying one night, or they couldn’t fit them in. The next night we went to attend their second try, and we didn’t even hit water. They said they “got a text from their captain that their previous tour saw no rays” so they are canceling that nights tour. All that was offered was a “2-year guarantee” (as in you can fly back to this island and try to do this tour with this place within 2-years) or another rebooking. We unfortunately didn’t have the option for rebooking so we are out $150 for multiple people in our party with no rays to be seen. The tour guide hyped the trip up so much on the boat ride saying that they have seen rays almost EVERY NIGHT. So disappointed, but more disappointed in their policy. Who would be able to travel within two years to this island in particular to do this one trip? $150 per person is no joke, and for those people who didn’t even get to hit water tonight, I feel horrible for. They should at least offer to refund partially. Very disappointed.

So sorry I just saw this post. I hope you received your answer. It only took us about 5 minutes to get to the spot. Maybe other tours are further away. We were in the water maybe an hourish? It was long enough - wouldn't want it longer. The mantas came right up under us as other suggested. It was amazing!

Just went last night (4/4/19) with SeaQuest on their night snorkel boat trip and we had 24+ people, 4 crew & the captain on rigid hulled inflatable boat.
