My wife and I did the two-hour Big Island Volcano Deluxe Helicopter Tour from Sunshine Helicopters during a recent visit to Hawaii. We had done a similar tour with Sunshine Helicopters during our first visit to the Big Island twenty years earlier, and while the second tour wasn't quite as good as the first, it was still a very good experience overall.
I booked the 11:30am tour online on the Sunshine Helicopters website a few days ahead of time. One of the reasons I picked Sunshine over the other companies is that they leave from a site near Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, which is where we were staying. When I asked the hotel concierge how to get to the site, she arranged to have Sunshine pick us up at the hotel, at 10:40. I paid extra for first class seating, meaning we would sit in the front row.
We were picked up on time and arrived at the heliport around 10 minutes later. We were given a safety orientation and probably had to fill out some forms. There was one other couple on our flight. Our pilot was Captain John.
We sat in the front, my wife in the middle seat next to John, me at the window so I could take pictures. There was a lot of glass so the view was very good, but it was very sunny and a bit warm in the cockpit, partly because the AC vent above us wouldn't stay open. Sunshine suggested wearing dark clothes to minimize reflections on the glass, which we did, but a lot of the equipment in the cockpit is light colored and causes reflections anyway. The majority of photos and videos that I took with my iPhone were ruined by the reflections.
The tour flies to the Kilauea crater, then towards Hilo, then along the north coast of the island, then back around to the starting point. Captain John narrated the entire time, and was very chill in his delivery. He was very informative, but some of the material was repetitive. The helicopter flies very slowly the entire time, and during the first part of the tour things could get a bit boring, especially with John's mellow narrative.
The Kilauea crater is just a big pit when seen from above, and unfortunately there was no sign of lava anywhere, unlike our tour twenty years earlier. Also, the helicopter is required to maintain a minimum altitude of 5000 feet (I think), so it couldn't get as close to the crater as we did the first time.
The tour got more interesting when we reached Hilo and started flying northward along the coast. The best part was flying into the valleys of Waipi'o Valley and seeing the lush greenery and waterfalls close up.
After the tour ended, we were given the opportunity to buy photos taken of us and video from cameras mounted outside the helicopter. We didn't buy either, but I did buy a Sunshine Helicopters t-shirt to replace the one I bought twenty years ago. :-)
The driver brought us back to the hotel after the tour. Despite the slow parts, we enjoyed the tour, and felt very comfortable with Captain John's flying skills and the safety orientation provided before the tour. If you don't want to do the full two hour tour, Sunshine offers a shorter tour that just covers the northern part of the island, which was the most interesting part of the full tour anyway.
Whichever option you choose, a helicopter tour of the Big Island is a unique experience that should not be missed.

First helicopter flight for me, and loved it.
We were extremely lucky because sat right up front, next to the pilot, so had just amazing views. I know people in the back, especially in the middle seats had a very restricted view.
It was a bit cloudy, so views of the crater weren’t too good. The pilot explained about the lava flows, volcanos, ancient stories, just wonderful . We flew to the other side of the island, out over the coast to see the valleys and waterfalls.

Imagine flying 2800 miles with a reservation firmly in hand. When I land in Hawaii, a phone message awaits saying "We didn't fill the flight so we're canceling it". They offered another time, but not in the first class seat I booked. I had to go home before they could rebook me anyway. She said people cancel all the time, well my VRBO wouldn't cancel my fees for going home early, why don't you have a loss of fee to those who cancel within say 72 hours. The last thing she asked was what's your weight , inferring it was a weight and balance consideration, really, AFTER you canceled me? Riiiight. It's just not a professional way to run a business.

Amazing experience. Ryan, the pilot, was informative, fun and interactive. We brought our 2 kids, ages 7 and 12, and they were able to ask questions throughout the tour too. Memories we won’t forget!!

Absolutely amazing! The staff at Sunshine are amazingly helpful and knowledgeable. The flight went beyond expectations. The pilot was very attentive to our comfort and she made sure we understood what she was doing and what to expect in flight conditions (which were perfect by the way).
If you are prone to motion sickness, take your Dramamine so you can enjoy the flight!

It was wonderful! Great to see both the Volcano and the valleys! Simply amazing. The almost 2 hour tour gets you to see most dream to see when coming to Hawaii.

This helicopter tour was the most amazing experience of our life! Our pilot Ryan did a great job flying the helicopter while also pointing out all the great sights to see and explaining the history of the island. You can't ask for better views of the volcanoes and coast line. There were endless opportunities for fantastic photos.

Trip was fantastic, ground crew was great. Everyone was professional and courteous. Ryan our pilot was great pointing out places to see and showing us the hiways to get there. She also had a few special things she like to point out, like houses in the middle of nowhere. The views were absolutely breathtaking down the valleys and along the cliffs. We were lucky enough to have almost perfect weather. Pick the front seats if you have a choice!

no, it's quite comfortable and you might need to bring a jacket as the AC works very well in the Helicopter.
