This tour company was easy to work with from beginning to end. Prompt and clear communication, professional. The guides, vehicles, and transfers were consistently high quality.

We can only give our highest regards to Encounter Africa Safari. They did everything they could to make this a memorable trip.

We planned this trip two years ago just before COVID hit. During this Monica was great at being flexible and helpful when the timing was right again.

We started our trip in Rwanda at the Genocide museum which was a powerful experience. This was a memorable visit.

After this, we went on gorilla trekking, which also was an amazing experience, but in a completely different way of course. It is well worth the hike, that you need to before you see them.

After this, we went to Queen Elizabeth park. Here we had a few days with game drives and a boat ride on the canal.

We also got a few extra experiences which we didn’t expect to have. With a visit to a Pygmy village and the salt lakes, while also learning about our guide Alonso's education in the area.

Everything made it an amazing experience. Even though there might be fewer animals compared to the neighbouring countries. Then you don’t miss out on anything there are plenty of animals to see and you will have a lot of time to enjoy them all without 15 other cars around you.

If you want a local and authentic experience then I would recommend Uganda as a travel destination for your future travel.

Wow! What an amazing experience we had, made possible by Patrick (coordinating) and Stephen (our guide, driver, companion and overall ROCKSTAR). Everything was well planned, well documented, great communication and we highly recommend using this company if you’re exploring Uganda. From the start, planning: this was a long overdue/postponed honeymoon (thanks to Covid), despite all the chaos of the world and multiple reschedules, Encounter Africa Safaris made this process easy and kept us up to date on all important information. As we got closer to our trip, we were looking for Airport transportation suggestions and asked Patrick who arranged to have our guide pick us up and take us to our downtown hotel. Next: our guide, Stephen, he was so wonderful to us. He picked us up at the airport and told us where to go, where it was safe and what to avoid. He was with us the entire time we were in Uganda and it might seem a little daunting to go on a road trip (8hrs one way to Bwindi) in a foreign country with a stranger, but not an issue with Stephen! He was so friendly, knowledgeable and kind. He also helped arrange for us to get a COVID test on our way so we would have the results for our second destination. On the way to/from Bwindi, we made several stops for food/restroom breaks and everywhere we went was clean, friendly and had a lot of really cool local items to purchase. Finally, the main event, the Gorilla tracking: this was absolutely one of the most incredible things we have ever done. It should be noted that I am not at all an outdoorsy/adventure loving type of gal so I was a little hesitant about this part of the honeymoon when my husband proposed the idea. Knowing my concerns about this, Stephen, who has done this before, was able to ensure we were part of a group that would fit my comfort and fitness level. And it was just really freaking cool. Overall, everything was better than expected, we had the best time and 10/10 recommend using Encounter Africa Safaris (and if possible, see if Stephen is open!).

We had a truly wonderful time in Uganda!

We were travelling as a couple, flying in on the Tuesday, starting our adventure with Encounter Africa on the Wednesday, and ending our trip on Sunday.

Our guide Obed made the experience so special in so many ways. Firstly, he turned up at our accommodation on the Tuesday night after dinner to introduce himself and talk through the plan for the next 5 days. This made us feel immediately at home with him and excited for the start of our trip.

Day 1: an 11 hour drive, but through beautiful scenery! We stopped off at the equator - the water experiment cost 10 shillings (about £2) - and we grabbed a coffee at Flamingoz as we arrived at about 9.30am. For lunch, we were taken to a buffet which enabled us to sample lots of local cuisine including green banana mash (I think called matake, and it tasted like mashed potato), goat stew/curry, among other things. Very tasty and all included in the safari price. All we had to cover was drinks, which were inexpensive. We arrived in Rushaga at the Gorilla Havens Lodge in the mid-afternoon, so we went for a short walk down the road to better see the view into the valley. The Lodge was stunning, a brilliant recommendation from Encounter, and our stay there was among the highlights of the trip. Dinner was delicious, and we were very well taken care of by all of the staff.

Day 2: Gorillas! Honestly a life changing experience. We hadn't realised that we'd needed face masks for the gorilla trek, so Obed very kindly tracked some down for us. The community dance was wonderful and the guides were incredibly professional and kind. We opted for the longest route, looking for (and finding) the Bwenza gorilla family: 13 gorillas including 2 silverbacks, 6 grown females, 3 juveiles and 2 babies. They were a very lively group and we were able to get some lovely photographs. Our hike took about 5 hours, with an additional hour spent with the gorilla family. We wanted to stop off for some craft souvenirs, so Obed dropped us off at the craft village adjacent to the gorilla centre.

Day 3: travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park + game drive #1. It was another long drive to the national park, but we reached Elephant Hab (our accommodation) in time for lunch. Again, Encounter found us a wonderful place to stay and we were able to get our first sightings of elephants from the balcony. We travelled into the park in the late afternoon for a 3 hour game drive. No sightings of the 'big cats' on this occasion but we were thrilled to see a whole variety of animals up close including: velvet monkeys, babboons, uganda cob, warthogs, waterbucks, speckled mouse birds, castle egrits, buffalo, red necked spurfowl, and more. We fleetingly thought we saw a python, but it turned out to be a tree branch... Obed was very knowledgable and was able to identify everything we saw, providing additional details and really enriching the experience.

Day 4: game drive #2, boat cruise and an additional surprise! Following an early breakfast, we headed out for our second game drive. We were thrilled to finally get glimpses of a small lion pride (we think 4 individuals), though some distance from the road. The zoom on our camera allowed us a much better view! Obed suggested a quick trip to Bunyampaka Salt Lake, which we accepted, and it allowed us to see hippos and flamingos. We were given a tour by a lovely man, who told us all about how they extract salt from the lake. We bought a couple of small bags as souvenirs. Following lunch, we went for our boat cruise. Due to an unexpected delay, we ended up on a different boat than planned, but it worked out for the better - Obed working his contacts and enabling us to have a private tour. It was too cool for any crocodile sightings, but we saw plenty of hippos and a wide range of water birds.

Obed had gotten to know us over several days, and suggested that we would enjoy a trip to the local orphanage where we would be able to see the children practicing songs and dances. We trusted his word, and it was an incredible experience - I cried a little. We took the opportunity to support the orphanage, and went on a walk with the Director up to the crater lakes at the top of the hill; and to see where they were beginning to build their school. This experience was incredibly moving and really enriched the experience we had in Uganda. It was a real show of Obed understanding that we wanted an authentic experience and going out of his way to personalise our adventure.

Day 5: saying goodbye. Our final day was spent in the car heading back to Entebbe for our flight home. Being honest, we slept for a lot of the long journey - completely exhausted by our action-packed 4 days. Obed took care of us very well, made sure we had plenty of rest-stops, and got us to the airport in plenty of time for our flight.

We were so sad that our trip had to end, and we wouldn't hesitate before booking another adventure with Encounter Africa Safaris. We are very keen to come back with family for other experiences - next time to see the chimps, and perhaps to visit other parks in Uganda - to see zebras, rhinos and other animals.

5/5 stars - we'd give 6+ if we could.

My time with Encounter was amazing. The safari and trekking if gorillas and chimpanzees could not have been a more perfect experience from the accomodation to the activities themselves. My driver, Martin was amazing and super helpful with all things I needed. Thank you so much.

We did an 11 day expedition from entebbe, through the bwindi forest for the gorillas, kibale for the chimpanzees, among others. Encounter was extremely accommodating and willing to provide us with a quality experience. Alex (aka bob) was an exceptional guide, he went out of his way to make sure we had an amazing time. If I go again, I’ll definitely be requesting him. One thing I forgot, stupidly, was a large lens for wildlife photography. If you want to take really good shots, you’re gonna need something 100mm and up. Thank you encounter!

From the very first email that Monica replied to, this tour company is awesome. Monica has been the most efficient agent I have had the pleasure to deal with. They offer lower budget, mid range and luxury tours. I opted for the mid range 5 day gorilla and chimp trekking for my son and I. Prefect from the start. Allen our driver was superb, very friendly and knowledgeable… Rushaga Gorilla Camp I absolutely LOVED! I wanted to stay forever… the people there made our stay so memorable., perfect in every way. Gorilla tracking was awesome. Then we
Moved up north to Kibale to see the chimps …. All top. Thanks Encounters Africa… will never forget our holiday ,and will keep our memories forever

I’m doubting if I join the same company as all the comment mentions as all people gave 5stars. I’m here to give 3-star probably looks like an alien. So, where should I start? I compared Encounter Africa safaris with other tour operators for the gorilla trekking and QENP, EAS is top 2 expert here in trip advisor and the tour price is slightly lesser. Monica’s response is professional and driver brought us safely to everywhere with smooth itinerary. However, encounter Africa safaris as a premium travel agency should provide excellent service.

First of all, I sincerely appreciate the hard work from Monica. Whenever I asked her in email, she will give you prompt and professional reply. Update the booking status from time to time. More importantly, she helped us secure the last gorilla permit and gave us clear itinerary. We consider Monica is very trustworthy. So, we were excitingly looking forward to our amazing journey.

Overall, the trip went very smooth. Even we would like to add ishasha for lion climbing tree in last min, they are able to arrange. We also request Alex to stop us in some phamarcy. He tried his best to look for us. Alex also proactively arranged luggage and took picture for us. My husband and I agree that he is a good driver for driving us from A to B safely and stopping everywhere we requested. But i doubt if he is a good tour guide. He is probably not in mood to be your tour guide.

As mentioned in our itinerary contract, our package includes “English speaking driver GUIDE”.

Before joining their tour, I have already traveled with other tour operators in Uganda. Generally, tour guide in Uganda is so knowledgable, informative and talkative. And we love learning culture. So we expect a lot with encounter Africa safari as a premium tour agency. However, I should admit that I have over expectations. The driver is a conversation killer, please allow me to say this.

Driver is a person who accompanies with your journey for many days. He should learn how to establish a friendship with clients ideally. And he might try to open the topics and ready to explain a lot for his country. These are the standard to be a guide. However, we have so much dead air with drivers just beginning the trip and at the end of our trip, we end up still like strangers. This is so far the most silent driver guide I met after visiting 70countries, including 10 countries in Africa.

My husband plays the role that he tried to open many topics with driver. But driver always just gave short answers or yes/no or I DONT KNOW to end the topic. I try to learn more from him. Asked him question about uganda. But his answer makes me like he doesn’t want to talk more. And he NEVER address my name throughout 5days journey. It makes me a bit frustrated and I don’t have mood to talk with him anymore.

Even driver just knew our nationality at the end of second day since we actively try to open different topics. You can imagine how “fruitful” our conversation was. I don’t know why we are the one to encourage the driver to speak more. It’s so strange.

Our conversation only about when we are starting from hotel and where we are going. That’s it. Very little information about the country. This is a driver not a guide.

Alex is a honest, responsible driver, also has great knowledge about animals and tried his best to look for animals with his sharp eyes but there are lots of room for him to improve in terms of communication with clients which is one of the most essential elements to make the happy journey for clients. Luckily we still learnt some fact about Uganda from previous trip with other guide. Otherwise, we didn’t earn any knowledge from Uganda and then go. That would be regretful.

We also have some issue when crossing border with them. We finally agreed to be dropped in the border between Uganda and Rwanda instead of going to gisenyi, a border with Congo. However, At the end of the trip, they didn’t give me back USD30.

So we gave usd2500 for usd 2470 rest of the bill at the beginning of the trip. We never earn back our usd 30 kept by driver. 10k for drinks and 10usd for ishasha entry fee were paid by driver. Where is the rest? Although this is small money, it’s not very nice. And at the end, Monica sent us email. She said sorry for driver forgot to give back money. My partner asked me why he didn’t give us back when we were dropped in the border. I told him, the driver always forgot everything. This is not about problem of money. It’s about conduct problem. So, Driver forgot to give back money, forgot to switch on air conditioner for 5days with lots of dust under hot weather, forgot to be nice to clients.... we should accept all these things. Can you tell me what we could do? These 5-day supposed to be our happiest days with my partner as I couldn’t see him for 3-month and also the up coming 3 months or longer. You know, I couldn’t trace back the time.

After all, I think if you are looking for trustworthy travel agency, choosing encounter Africa safari maybe okay as Monica did excellent job! But, you should be picky for the driver. Because driver is the one who accompanies for your whole trip and the important impression for everything. But if you just require safe and smooth journey with clear itinerary arrangement, Alex can be your one of great choices. For me, maybe just unlucky.

Think twice before you choose even they have many nice comments here. Becoz who knows you are the next unlucky person like me. Im exhausted enough.

Hello Basmah Many thanks for travelling with us and indeed posting a review about our service. As a company we appreciate both positive and negative reviews as they assist us in improving our service. Our prime goal is to provide a life time experience to all our clients which we do with passion. Its good that you appreciate all services offered to you from start to end including amends made to the itinerary. You also point out that Alex was indeed a good person, flexible and knowledgeable about wildlife since he tried to identify and figure out wildlife during your safari. We have been with Alex for about five years and if you read about what others talk about him, you will be impressed. We also know that a guide may kill or make a safari depending on how he behaves during your safari. While this is true, we also call upon our clients to corporate and be law abiding while in Uganda and Rwanda. As a company we think the below could have caused some of the issues you raise above THE DRONE ISSUE On your first day to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Alex our guide discovered that you were carrying a DRONE. To bring a drone and be able to use it in Uganda and Rwanda one requires requires permission and proper paper work. In other words DRONES are not allowed in Uganda without permission. So when Alex saw you with a drone, he became concerned and asked you whether you had permission to bring it in Uganda and later use it which you refused to give. He insisted but you indeed refused and decided to keep quite. This brought suspicion as to the purpose of use and why you were not disclosing anything to him. Never the less he tried his lever best as a professional guide but you were not amused because of the above. Any one carrying a DRONE IN UGANDA OR RWANDA without permission is not accepted and am sure even in your home country you are supposed to abide by laws governing such issues. You told Alex that you had traveled with another tour operator in Uganda and you were able to fly your DRONE. While this was possible, it was illegal and had the government discovered you, you could have ended up in prison and the License of the company which was was with you revoked. Encounter Africa safaris is a law abiding business entity and we ensure that we advise you on what is wrong and right. When Alex advised, you indeed did not use it for the rest of the trip which was good but looks like it did not go down well with you. UGANDA -RWANDA BOARDER CROSSING According to our initial arrangement, your were supposed to be dropped off in Gisenyi Rwanda from Uganda but having discovered that you were carrying a DRONE without permission, we advised you to either leave it in Uganda or risk being punished at the border (Uganda-Rwanda boarder). On refusing to reveal all paper work and permissions for your drone, office advised Alex to drop you close to the boarder so that you find your way to Rwanda which you agreed. Its good to know that you managed to sneak it in but as a company, we could not risk to cross with you since the implications would be too bad for us in terms of our integrity and operations. So next time, kindly show all paper work and no one will blame you at all. 20 DOLLARS Its very true Alex was supposed to give you 30 Dollars back since you had paid it in excess but we have a feeling that he forgot and you also did not ask for it. in your email you indicate that he paid 10 Dollars and 10K in Ishasha and as a company, we are okay to send you 20 Dollars that was not given to you. AC IN THE VEHICLE All our safari vehicles have AC and drinking water, we also give complementary T SHIRTS to all our clients. As a company, we are still wondering why you did not ask him to switch on the AC? Did he refuse? Why didn't you report this to office since you had all our emails and Monica was always in touch with you. On behalf of Encounter Africa safaris, we would like to thank you for booking with us and we also encourage you to follow and respect laws that governs business in Uganda and Rwanda. Thanks Management
