We visited Colombo for the first time a few days ago. It was one of the ports we stopped at as part of a cruise. We decided that the best way to explore the city would be to hire a Tuk Tuk.
The Tuk Tuk driver told us that the fee for both of us for a two hour tour would be $10 US dollars. We agreed to this. The tour was very enjoyable and we visited a number of temples and other iconic sites in the city.
At the conclusion of the tour the driver demanded $30. We obviously disputed this and asked him to explain how he came to this amount. He said it was $10 each and a further $10 to cover the cost of tickets to the temples.
We eventually reached a compromise but were left feeling very annoyed by the way we had been treated.
As soon as you exit the port at Colombo you are instantly surrounded by an abundance of taxi and tuk tuk drivers. In my opinion they regard tourists as prey.
Having said that I still believe that hiring a Tuk Tuk is the best way to explore the city.
However I would respectfully advise that the following steps should be considered to ensure you are not ripped off:
1. Agree a fee, clarifying the details of the hire. I would recommend that you film this transaction on your phone.
2. When you visit the Temples, tell the driver you will pay for the tickets (which amounts to pennies!).
3. The driver may try and take you to jewellery and/or gift shops, even if you have not requested this. Make it clear that you do not want this. I suspect he received a fee from the shop owners for bringing tourists to their establishments.
4. Our driver deliberately asked for his fee before we retuned to the port gate. We subsequently realised that he wanted to avoid any involvement of the Police or other authorities, who are present at the Port Entrance.
5. Ask to see the driver's licence and take a photo of this.
Not withstanding our dispute with the Tuk Tuk driver, Colombo is a wonderful, vibrant city and well worth a visit. The Sri Lankan people are friendly and welcoming. We certainly hope to return there one day.

We took this activity and kandy tour with mahesh driver/guide was on time for the tour ! First thing was information from him was good and somehow it’s really hard to understand the English since many travellers don’t speak native Sri Lankan language , there was not proper time management for each activity as it just goes so we really don’t how much time we could spend in each activity and there was some Misguidance for the tickets as it required foreigners tickets to enter in some activities , bought native entry tickets and situation was little confused. Otherwise it’s all good . Helpful with some personal stuff .

As our hotel was located outside of Colombo, we decided to do the tour by car rather than by tuk tuk. We had a great time. Dimuth is a very nice person and a safe driver. He showed us the highlights of Colombo and provided interesting facts about them. We can only recommend to do this tour :)
P.S. Even in times of COVID, we never were worried about our health on this trip. Everybody in Sri Lanka takes this topic very serious, is wearing a mask and is practicing social distancing.

This city tour of Colombo is highly recommend as it offers you the chance visit many places of interest like Independence square, Gangaramya temple, Colombo downtown, light house etc.
Super friendly guide and welcoming locals make for the tour to be all the more worth remembering!

Prima tour. Pickup at cruise terminal was super and on time. See a lot of important places. Great to do with tuk tuk. Temple amazing. Very good guide, friendly and patient. Also to do with elderly people. Advice: do it!!!!!!

I booked this tour for half day and it was enough to visit the beautiful spots in Colombo. Tour guide was expansive knowledge on Sri Lanka and was very helpful to take my photos. Since Colombo was very hot when I visited, riding the car instead of tuk tuk provided comfort.

We found this service on TripAdvisor, it was really good day tour in Colombo.
Visited gangarama temple and other places,markets.
Our guide dimuth was excellent too, nicely speaking English and always smiling,good knowledge about country.
