We did a private tour with Sonia to Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall. The entire trip was seamless as we were picked up and dropped off directly at our hotel. We had a lovely time with Sonia who was very knowledgeable and humorous. The highlight of the trip was definitely the views of the Great Wall at sunset and nighttime, which you can only see at Simatai. Gubei Water Town was also beautiful and the light show is definite must see.

I booked this tour as a solo traveler wanting to get outside of Beijing to see a different perspective of rural areas and the Great Wall. Kim was a great guide and spoke excellent English. She was friendly and went over and beyond to share her country with me. The driver was also very professional and private care comfortable. I’d definitely recommend the company in general and Kim in particular.

Very fast and efficient response from Jenna, was there for 8 days and Nico was our private guide. He’s very attentive, patient and knowledgeable. He brought us to eat all the food we craved, regardless it’s spicy chicken or wanton noodles, he knows where’s the best ones.. Most importantly, he helped us watch after our kids and my kids enjoyed their time with him. I would highly recommend Nico to whoever is gonna use their services!!!!!!

After researching visiting the different sections of the Great Wall outside of Beijing for our first trip to China, I learned that there was an opportunity to see and hike the Wall at night at the Simatai section. While we had considered a DIY approach to minimize the cost, which would have done so significantly, but it also would have been a significant challenge, considering we do not speak Chinese, and are unfamiliar with traveling in China. Also, we were only in Beijing for a week, and wanted to maximize our time for enjoying what the area had to offer, rather than wasting time trying to figure things out on our own, and risking missing a bus, buying the wrong tickets, getting lost/stranded, and/or missing out entirely on the experience.
Our guide, Justin, arrived early to pick us up, and was already waiting for us in the hotel lobby when we came down from our room to wait for him. He not only spoke English very well, but was also knowledgeable and proficient enough to answer our questions, as well as carry on a conversation on topics not necessarily related to our tour. He was very engaging and enthusiastic, and was very helpful in navigating us through Gubei Water Town, and up to and around this section of the Wall.
The only real snag was due to the timing of our trip, in general. As it was the off-season, many shops were closed, so we didn’t get the full experience of the town, but still had plenty to do, and with fewer tourists, which was nice. Also, since the evening opening time for the Wall was at 5:30pm, we missed seeing the sunset from atop the Wall, as the sun goes down earlier at this time of year, and the sky was already dark by the time the first gondola of tourists reaches the top. Neither of these curve balls really affected our enjoyment of the visit and tour.

We decided to visit Simatai Great Wall looking for the opportunity to have a different view of the Wall, at night, and visit an original old town - Gubei Water Town. We have only good things to say about this tour and Catherine Lu Tours, everything promissed was delivered. To go to Gubei, 1:30h/ 2 h far from Beijing they meet us in our hotel with a guide (Nico), a driver and a very comfortable car to the trip. And we have the fortune to have Nico as our guide. He is graduated in history and have a deep knowledge not only of the Great Wall but Chinese culture too. Very friendly, easy relationship, with him we visited every part of Gubei Water Town, learned about Chinese habits, tradition and had new experiences with the local food. After the afternoon at Gubei we took the cable car and went to see the Graet Wall at night. Unforgetable experience, stunning view of the town with all the lights on. Definetely I would recommend this tour and Catherine Lu Tours. Getting this tour ask for Nico, he is the best!

I just returned from my first visit to China. I do not routinely bother with reviews, but I must give credit to Peter, my tour guide for two days on the Great Wall of China! If ever there was a perfect guided private tour, this was it! Peter is a history major, and he gave me so much more than a walk on the wall. I was blessed to have spent two wonderful days and one night with Peter and his driver, (Jason) two weeks ago. He has given me memories that I can relay to others and an experience that I will always cherish. We had the Jinshanling portion of the wall all to ourselves the day after my Simatai at night and overnight stay in Gubei Water Town. Peter guided me expertly thru Water Town, allowing me to browse gift shops, watch live performances, and a perfect ending with an authentic chinese dinner that still lingers on my palate. His knowledge was overwhelming; he knew more history than I could have gathered on my own time, he was engaging from the moment we met in Beijing and thruought the Great Wall of China hikes, ending our two days together with a spur of the moment personal bike ride and final meal in Beijing. If you can request a tour guide, ASK FOR PETER!!!!

I had the most amazing experience seeing Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall with Catherine Lu Tours sorting out everything for me. I couldn't ask anything better than the team that I had: Peter and Jason, the guide and driver respectively.
Peter spoke perfect English. He has been the most knowledgeable guide I have ever had. Heck, he even knew more of my own country than I did! He knew the place really well and knows where the perfect spots were! And it didn't hurt that he took great pictures!
The transportation was comfortable and very pleasant. Driver Jason was very accomodating as well. They were just the perfect team.
Unfortunately we had no time eating in a proper restaurant because of time constraint. And I am not taking this against Peter or Jason. We wanted to eat but given our itinerary and the limited time (which was of my own choosing) we couldn’t have eaten in a proper restaurant. Instead we ate as we got along the tour and that was perfectly fine.
I couldn’t really say anything negative about the Tour. It was near perfect! 9.5/10!!!
