I was lucky to have spent an evening with Catherine this month on this wonderful food tour of the hutong in Beijing. First of all, Catherine is a kind and generous person. Not only did she arrange to come and get me as my work schedule was very busy, but she spent the time explaining the history, culture and food on the tour. It was very personalized and I learned so much that even in 19 years in Greater China it was new to me and very enjoyable. The food was fantastic, sampling food from restaurants that I would not have been able to find or access on my own. This really is a must do when you come to Beijing beyond the normal tours you may be looking at. After all, you learn most about the lives and culture of people through their food. Beijing food is so lovely and I really feel lucky to have spent the evening with Catherine.

The Hutong tour was the culmination of our trip to China and was the perfect way to end our holiday The tour was extremely well organised and Jenny was the perfect guide. She has exceptional knowledge of the area and enhanced the experience helping choose foods suitable to our pallet and going the extra yard to make sure we experienced the real Beijing.

My two college-aged sons and nephew, along with my 72-yr old mother and I, enjoyed a well-organized, adventurous tour with Nico. We could not have arranged this on our own. We made several stops in the hutong area that would have been impossible for us to configure on our own. Nico is culturally and linguistically knowledgable, bubbly, and energetic. My sons and I have a deep background in northern Chinese/Korean food, and the cuisine and drinks surpassed our expectations. It was a very appropriate tour for our funny little mix of a group. I highly recommend this option for experiencing the hutong in the old town area. We hope to see Nico again and meet his darling baby.

For the price I thought this was a group tour... well no! For the price I had a whole Nico (guide) for me alone! All the tour was great, the food was sooo good! My favorite was the donkey burger and the beer so cold! Nico was great and we had very nice conversation, thanks Nico!

PETER was the best tour guide ever!! We spent all day with him!! He was fun, cheerful, knowledgeable and sweet to our daughter!! We all learned so much about Beijing ancient and new. He took such good care of us!! We had so many delicious things to eat we would never have found or tried, do the food tour also! China is a gem 💎 and Peter makes it sparkle!! The whole day was amazing ! We recommend highly Catharine Lu !

This really is one of the best ways (the only way?) to see old Beijing while meeting new people and making friends at the same time. Oh, and the food is amazing. If you are travelling alone you get dinner and socialising at the same time. Justin knew his way around, knew his food, dealt with a crowded evening and spoke excellent English. A great night out.

Our tour was incredible! We got to try a ton of different foods and our guide was amazing! He spoke very good English and was very knowledgeable about the things we were doing and could answer all our questions. Do not eat before this tour you will be very full by the end!! A must do if you’re in Beijing!

We only had one night in Beijing and really wanted to explore the local food scene. This tour mixed the history of the hutong dwellings with finding hole-in-the-wall places serving amazing homemade food and craft beers. Sophie met us right on time and instantly felt like a friend. As we walked through the hutong neighborhood, she explained the origins and meanings of the doorways and the hierarchy of the people who used to live there. It helps that she lives in the area when she’s in the city! The food was delicious - from scallion mushroom pancakes to noodles to barbecue to hot pot - NOTHING disappointed! These are places we never would’ve been able to find on our own and Sophie was the perfect person to guide us through it all.

I cannot recommend this tour enough. Our guide Nick took us on a wonderful experience in the Hutong. Come hungry as there were so many great foods to try. My wife and I find ourselves craving the Jianbing even now! Nico was awesome, he provided great insight into every day life in Beijing and was generally a cool guy to spend time with. We ended up booking all our tours through Catherine Lu, can’t reommend them enough. Top notch communication and very customer service oriented in customizing our tours. Book this tour, you’ll love it!

We did too! Originally we were supposed to meet at 6 but Peter took us all through Beijing that day and he told us he was also our guide for the food later! That was really nice so we started around 4:30.

from what I can recall we had vegetarians on the tour. Just let the guide know and they will sort some options but some places are visited with the meat dish the main objective!
