Great hike, not as bad as people describe! Just get couple days to get used to elevation in Quito prior the hike! Bring some layers and cash!

Enjoyed very much, because we are in low season, we combined with several tour companies, which changed the itinerary slightly but no problem. Good group of 9 tourists, guide was very knowledgeable and driver fine. TAKE lots of warm clothes and rain slicker plus hat and gloves. (You can buy them there too.) we were at almost 5000m and what normally would have been a short 2km frolic hike was tiring, but worth it. Only 200m ascent on pretty good trail, but don’t do your first day in Quito from sea level. Temp at the Basecamp was about 5C (40F) but very cold winds and snow coming from higher up. Hike in a blizzard! Where else can you do this at the Equator? Note, volcano has been active so they are not permitting you to ascend further, there was a glacier another 400m up, but not sure I would have made it in the time available, if at all. I hike a reasonable amount, but I was definitely feeling my 65 years today. BTW, some clouds but views were great.

O passeio foi ótimo. O contato com a natureza foi formidável. Foi possível apreciar o vulcão, bem como a natureza localizada em sua proximidade. O grande x da questão nesse passeio é o processo de aclimatação visto que a caminhada se dá há 4000 metros de altitude e alcança no final 4800. Sugiro que o turista venha com calçado impermeável e roupa para temperaturas negativas. Interessante agendar o passeio no fim de seu período de viagem para que já tenha ocorrido o ajuste do organismo à altitude da região. Nossa guia, Jymena foi muito atenciosa e paciente.

Cotopaxi was closed due to unusual activity from the volcano, so we went to Quilotoa instead. Oscar was a great guide - knowledgeable and friendly, and stopped several times along the way for us to get coffee, use the washroom, and learn about the indigenous peoples and how they live in the highlands. Our van was comfortable and had AC which was welcome! The visit to Quilotoa was great as well and ended with lunch at a local restaurant (get the locro de papa soup!). Would definitely recommend this tour! :)

We had an incredible day at Cotopaxi National Park with our guide Oscar. During the drive, he explained the geography of Quito, Cotopaxi and the surrounding areas to us, and also helped answer any questions we had about Ecuadorian life and the country's history. The climb to the respite itself was a little tough given the altitude and steep ascent, however totally doable. Oscar let us take our time, enjoying the view and taking pictures along the way. We also enjoyed a beautiful walk around the lagoon and a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Would definitely recommend this tour for anyone wanting to leave the hustle and bustle of the city for some time in nature.

We enjoyed the whole experience. Oscar was a great guide and made learning about Cotopaxi fun. The hike up was difficult, but possible if you take it slow. It felt great to make it to the top. Make sure you dress warm— almost the same as if you were going skiing— gloves, hat, and layers. Rain coat is advised.

Wir haben zu dritt einen Tagesusflug zum Cotopaxi unternommen und waren hell begeistert. Die Fahrt war dank mehreren Zwischenstops sehr angenehm. Diego, unser Guide war ausgesprochen professionell und hat diesen Tag zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis gemacht. Wir sind schliesslich sicher auf 5100müM angekommen, die Aussicht war fabelhaft und unvergesslich. Nach dem körperlich anstrengenden Auf-und Abstieg haben wir in einem super Restaurant gegessen und haben dann unseren nach Hause Weg angetreten. Wir empfehlen diese Tour allen weiter und möchten uns nochmals herzlich bei Diego und Dante bedanken.

We had a great day trip from Quito to Cotopaxi with our guide Daniel. He picked us up from our hotel on time at 8am and drove expertly to Cotopaxi taking a scenery road which allowed us to appreciate the geography of the inter-valley region. The drive took about 1.5 hours. His approach takes you around the volcanoes from all angles. Daniel was truly passionate about Ecuador and very knowledgeable about wildlife and vegetation of the region. He stopped plenty of times for awesome picture opportunities. We hiked from the parking lot (15K ft) to the refuge (16K ft) doing the zig-zag approach and experienced no issues with altitude sickness whatsoever (he stopped by a kiosko where we could buy coca candy and leaves if needed before entering the park). The weather was awful as we ascended, with small hail and dust from the strong winds, but he was patient and set the pace perfectly for us to successfully reach the refuge. We grabbed hot chocolate up in the refuge (2.5 per cup, bring change) and warmed up before going back down. On our way back to Quito, we stopped by an authentic local restaurant around 3pm where we had a soup, a pork dish, and an ice cream. Back to the hotel by 5pm promptly. This is a great experience for a Quito escapade which you should consider if you're looking to do something based off the city.

We were thinking about booking the private tour to Cotopaxi. We are three adults, and a sort of worried about the 16,000 foot elevation of the hike. If the hike is too difficult for us, we will be able to turn back right?
