We did the overnight tour to Acatenango and our amazing guide Vinny gave us the best trip we could have asked for. Hurricane Julia caused the weather to be rainy and very windy all night and he still made the best of it for us. And the best hot chocolate! We will definitely be doing the hike again and hope to get Vinny again!

This was an incredible experience. Our guides, Diego and David, we incredibly knowledgable and understanding of the needs of the group. Although, this excursion was physically difficult, I felt completely supported and safe. The views were AMAZING and like nothing I've ever seen before. Seeing a volcano erupting is insane. I definitely recommend. Please bring warm clothes. The night was VERY COLD!

Volcano Acatenango 2 days hike
Heavy hike with spectaculair view at the end. Fresh food during the trip, made by Josias, which is a perfect guide for this tour. He knows everything about nature and vulcano, speaks english and is a nice person.

My husband, three friends, and I thoroughly enjoyed our overnight hike of Pacaya! The hike is harder than we anticipated, though we all got through it. It's just hard to constantly be going uphill, but if you just pace yourself and stop whenever you need to, you'll make it through! (Also remember that it's harder to breathe at higher elevation, but the guides are used to it, so it's easy for them. But they'll wait for you!) I'd also recommend taking altitude medicine ahead of time if you're not used to that elevation.
I wouldn't recommend doing the hike during rainy season like we did, because we didn't get any of the amazing views that other people get, just fog. So that part was disappointing, but that's nothing the tour guides can change!
Note that you should supply your own hiking sticks and camping headlights (if you want them, and I do suggest them). We paid for a horse to carry the camping gear up and back, and I think that was worth it. That way we only had to carry our personal items. One of our friends is a frequent hiker, so he prepared us well. We all brought water, toilet paper, a change of dry/warm clothes for camping, sani wipes, etc. (Pro tip: a funnel for women is a great asset!) There are outdoor toilets (without doors, so just take turns/have someone keep watch!). They don't flush and they're not to sit on, they're just made of concrete, but they beat having to dig a hole in the ground! But again, bring your own TP, and plastic bags for trashing it all later.
We fit 3 people in one tent comfortably, but the sleeping mats under the sleeping bags were pretty thin/not particularly comfortable. So if you're regular camper and have your own sleeping pad, I suggest bringing it. But we weren't expecting the Ritz, so it wasn't a big deal. Camping is camping!
There were tons of stray dogs at camp, but they were all super well behaved. We gave them our scraps of food, lol.
The dinner and breakfast that our guide made were AMAZING, so five stars for that alone! The coolest part was roasting marshmallows over the lava vents (we didn't see actual lava, but being over in that part of the volcano felt like being on another planet, which was pretty cool).
We would definitely like to do the hike/camping experience again during dry season when we can see the phenomenal views! Many thanks to Old Town Outfitters for a great time. Mimi made the whole booking process very easy.

The tour was very poorly and unsafely executed.
Our group consisted of myself, my girlfriend, another random person, 3 porters and a guide.
The safety issues began with the guide not properly equipping us for the hike. Although he felt he deserved two hiking poles for himself, each of us only received one pole. The pole the random person in our trip received was broken and could not be extended. I gave him my pole because he was already have a lot of difficulty with the hike because he was told his tennis shoes would be fine to hike in. They were not. So I had to buy some walking sticks along the way from a random local.
Our guide going up was too out of shape to keep up with our group. We left him behind and went with our porter to base camp so we really didn't see our guide the first day for almost the entire hike until we got to base camp.
When we got to camp, the guide, seemingly worried about his fitness for the remainder of the hike, tried to convince us that it is not worth going to the top of the mountain because it might be cloudy. We affirmed we wanted to go to the top, so he said the porter would take us up so that he could stay back so 'breakfast would be ready' when we got back down and so we could beat the rush of people back to the bottom.
I can't emphasize enough that our guide did not guide us to the summit.
The porter took us up to the summit the next morning. When we got back down to the bottom, the guide hadn't even started breakfast (a bit mind blowing because it was yogurt, strawberry and granola), not had he packed up anything to prepare to leave.
On the way back down, our guide was apparently a brand new man. He left our group routinely for periods longer than 15 minutes at a time. He was able to get down so fast because my girlfriend and the other person in our group were really struggling on the steep decline on the way down. The guide even said the night before that most injuries occur on the way down. Yet, our guide left us all except to wait for us every 15 or so minutes and then leave us behind again. I had to help the other two people in our tour get down the mountain.
Our guide was unfit and unsafe. I give my two stars for el fuego itself. You get the same view regardless of who you go with, but I would go with another group where the guides are fit, they equip their hikers, and they assist hikers who are struggling.

OTO led an incredible climb on the Acatenango Vocano with a sunset summit at the same time Fuego Volcano erupted! Our Guide Lucas kept a good pace with encouragement, a big smile and helpful advice. We were lucky to have OTO’s head man Matt join us with additional insights and cheer. Great Basecamp set up and excellent food. Highly recommend them.

We booked a 9 day personalized itinerary with Old Town Outfitters. Everything from the Pacaya Volcano Overnight trip, Walking tour of Antigua, Kayaking Lake Atitlan, and climbing the temples and pyramids of TIkal.
Everyone from the guides, the drivers, and the office staff took such great care of us. I would highly recommend this tour outiftter.
They employ local guides who are extremely knowledgeable of the area and we learned so much! We felt it really paid off to have local guides who could speak the language fluently.
Thank you for an amazing trip! We hope to be back to visit soon!
