Being a big fan of cooking, I thought I could not miss a cooking class while visiting Sichuan. Talking to Wonder at China Discovery, he suggested the experience of the Chuançais Museum: cooking class and visit of the museum. It was a wonderful idea!
Even if a little far from Chengdu city centre, the museum is set in a beautiful location and it is worth a visit with a peaceful garden and lily pond and traditional Chinese buildings. It is also very interesting to learning the long history of Sichuan cuisine while visiting the museum.
But the cooking class was the best! The kitchen itself was amazing; I learnt to prepare Sweet Panda Steamed Dumplings, Mapu Toufu and Kungpao Chicken with Evelyn as a great teacher. The explanation, all in English, was easy and clear and the result incredibly tasteful.
This is an experience I would recommend to any food lover!

I went back myself on this tour, which was apparently quite unusual as this is typically part of larger group tours. I took a subway and taxi, and it was a bit frightening being so far from Chengdu, in a more commercial/suburban area, but it worked out fine in the end to find the place. My tour guide was generous, and his English was great. The best part is the outside pavilion, where you can sample many traditional dishes. The only thing is that you can get too full to eat the food you cook yourself. Don’t expect to learn too much about how to cook Sichuan foods as this part was quick. You’ll get a few useful recipes to use back home, however. The facility was great, and everyone worked to make me feel welcome even though I was on my own. My tour guides even used his own phone app to get me a taxi back to the subway station.

A great experience, once you finally get there. We gave ourselves over an hour to get there, and ended up being nearly half an hour late. For people going by metro/bus and not taxi from Chengdu center, it takes 45mins by metro to Xipilu, and nearly 1hr for the P22 bus - and the P22 stop is metro exit B, OPPOSITE side of the road, and no there aren't any signs when you exit the train station, we were walking around for 10mins before we saw one on the opposite end of the station.
Once we got there, we discovered we were the only ones on the tour that day, so our tour guide had waited for us! To make up the time before the place closed for the day, we had the cooking experience first instead of last, then an abbreviated tour though the museum. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the whole experience great fun. And the food, oh god, the food! Even though we cooked it ourselves it was fantastic, our guide was amazed that we finished it all!

There's apparently 2 menus you can do. The day we went, we did panda dumplings (so, red bean paste dumplings with panda faces), Kung Pao Chicken and Mapo Tofu. I think you get to choose which you want to do when you book.
