Our guide Erick made sure he communicated prior to the trip and took care of everyone. He made sure we took pics, met with locals and learned the important history of that city. It was wonderful. The food and beverages provided were delicious and hit the spot.

Although it was extremely hot, Erick did a great job being our tour guide. He provided umbrellas, hand towels and water. The food was absolutely to die for! You must try the fried fish with coconut sauce. My only gripe was they didn’t take us to the different murals such as the I love being black.

Our tour to Palenque.
I truly enjoyed this tour. It was a 1 1/2hr beautiful drive into the mountains.
For anyone who's interested in the history, read below 👇🏿:
San Basilio de Palenque is a historic Afro-Colombian village, located along the north coast of Colombia known as Cartagena, Colombia. It is renowned as the first free African town in the Americas, founded by escaped slaves in the 16th century.
In the early 1600s, a group of enslaved Africans led by Benkos Bioho escaped from their Spanish captors in Cartagena, fled and sought refuge in the mountains, jungles, and territories surrounding Cartagena. After resisting many attempts to be recaptured, through acts of resistance, they were finally granted independence in 1713, making Palenque the first free African town in the Americas.
Current population is roughly 4K Palenque people.

This was the excursion I was looking forward to the most. I heard great things about it and wanted to learn more about the history. What I enjoyed about the tour is it was personable; we had a Ph.D student join our tour who was very knowledgeable about Palenque. The dance portion was my favorite, I wanted more time there to listen to the music and watch the dances. Two things I would have changed about our specific tour is I wish we walked to each location. It was hot so we opted to get back on the bus; bad decision, because you miss some cool murals. Then we didn’t get a chance to walk in what felt like the heart of Palenque, that’s where all the locals were sitting outside just being. I would have wanted time to just chill there.

This was an excellent tour and a wonderful way to spend the day. Experiencing the culture and resiliency of the people of Pelenque felt like a once in a lifetime experience. Ronal is an excellent guide and you can tell he is proud of the community; his knowledge is vast and he does an excellent job connecting you with many people in the town. The people of Palenque will take care of your every need, even umbrellas if needed, so there’s no need to bring anything other than some pesos for much deserved tipping. I cannot imagine anyone who takes this tour would regret it.

My heart is full. I knew I had to visit Palenque/Palenge on my trip to Colombia. What I didn't know is what tour company to use. So even if you don't read my entire review, CHOOSE THIS TOUR with TravelPalenque. This tour company is owned and operated by a Palenque native who has strong ties with the community. It is not a company simply providing tours who contracts a separate Palenque tour guide. (Review may interchange the Spanish spelling Palenque with the native Palenge spelling).
My tour guide, Erick texted me the night before to confirm the pickup time from my hotel. They provide door to door service in an air conditioned vehicle, a typical lunch, and a deeply informative tour. I was traveling solo, but once they picked up others on the way our group was a total of 10 women.
Erick gave us a thorough welcome as we started our drive (up to 90 minutes from Cartagena) to provide an overview of the day and tips when engaging with locals as well as a few key phrases in the Palenge language. You can feel the pride he has in his home. Erick curated a perfect day to gift tourists with an insight to the Palenque people and community. He carefully chooses activities that don't just introduce you, but immerse you in the culture. He thoughtfully explains the community through art and music with a discussion of history.
My birthday was the day before the tour and Erick had the drumming/dancing group incorporate a mini celebration after their show. These are the types of thoughtful touches that make a tour company stand out from the others.
I dont want to give too many details so you can experience the day yourself. However, Erick will show you key locations in the community, allow you to ask questions and engage, facilitate rest and water breaks, provide a delicious typical Palenque meal (with choices), and deliver a unique cultural experience that includes a dancing and drumming presentation you will never forget.
I travel extensively and always choose activities that explore the African diaspora if there is a connection in the area. A trip to Colombia is not complete without visiting Palenque/Palenge!

This tour was absolutely amazing, our guide Ronaldo was so attentive and informative. We had many stops on this tour and each one was a beautiful experience. Thank you so much Tavel Palenque!

This tour is a must! Black owned & operated! Ronald was the best tour guide. As a formal representative of Palenque he was knowledgeable & sincere. It was a pleasure to meet his Mom & Dad. I loved dancing with the local villagers & I was blessed by Rosalina, the 91 yr Old healer. Food was delicious. Our black is beautiful!

The experience was very cool, something very different from what one is used to. The way the guide shows us the customs of Palenque is unique with that energy that she transmits and interacted with us through dancing and singing, a very beautiful experience.

What does it mean when it says “Musical Tour” during booking? Is this different from the walking tour of Palenque where you get to see the village and hear its history? Thank you.
