Alex was amazing at creating a welcoming and informative environment about Afro Columbian culture past and present. Palenque was a beautiful and humble space with friendly people eager for you to learn their ways. The connection as a Black Caribbean person was palpable in the language, songs, dances, and art. The murals are amazing in town, and the restaurant we ate quite frankly had the best lemonade I have ever had. Don'Would book again!

Wonderful! We learned so much about the culture and history of Palenque. Victor did a great job sharing and educating us on the customs and life of the beautiful people in Palenque. I would highly recommend.

In our visit to San Basilio de Palenque we got to experience the amazing life, history and culture in this small town. AfroColombian history came to life thanks to our tour guide, Victor. We went to a dance performance, tasted the delicious sweets prepared by Ruperta, visited with a natural healer and had a delicious lunch prepared by Victor's sister. The experience was phenomenal and would highly recommend.

While physical slavery is mostly a thing of the past, a newer type of slavery still exists to this very day. As the stories of the life and struggles of the Palenque are told think about what enslaves you today. What are you a slave to? Are you comfortable in your bondage, House Negro? Ask yourself what are you willing to do to be Free?
Don't get it twisted you're not learning about slaves from Africa, you're learning about masters of themselves.
An excellent tour provided by Viktor and the Palenque people. Loved the sweets we made over the fire and the alumuerzo. The dancing and drumming were nice. Also enjoyed the medicine man.
Handicarafts are overpriced but for a worthy cause.
Bring towel, mini-fans, straw hats, anything to stay cool because its the kind of heat you can not prepare for.

If you want to really know the facts about African American history this is the tour for you. I have taken several African American history classes and I see now how much information from omitted from the text. I was truly amazed. This is a tour I would recommend for anyone who wants to know the real background of the African American culture. The community of Palenque (Palanke as the locals call it). Sofia was an amazing guide. I really enjoyed interacting with the Palanke community!

It was an excellent and very interesting tour. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars wasn’t their fault! We had a bit of a medical issue and had to miss some of the tour. Victor took such good care of us, we were very grateful. It was very hot and so important to keep hydrated, as they told us.

Authentic. Real. Honest. Moving. I am of Colombian descent and to have visited, walked the streets of Palenque and interacted with the residents was life-changing. There are many parts of our history, globally, that we shy away from. Palenque is proof that even the ugly sides of humanity, in this case slavery, need to be told. This is a town of beautiful, positive, strong, resilient and humble people. They open their homes to you. They carry with great responsibility the memories of their/our ancestors. Whether is was with music, drinks (that was extra fun), food or laughter their intent is for you to experience the town - not just sightsee. I have always been proud of my Colombian roots and Palenque made me even prouder.

Felt such community there. Our guide Sofia was great, it was like we were hanging with her in the neighborhood. We walked the streets of Palenque, visited homes, ate an DELICIOUS lunch, had fun dancing...great times. Highly recommend & they were accommodating to our schedule which caused for a condensed tour due to a flight change.

I will caveat this review and say that despite the 3 star rating, you should still go on the tour. There is just quite a bit of room for improvement.

On the day of the tour, I received a message that the tour's start time would be pushed to 10am due to an issue of some sort - not a problem for me but the person that was supposed to join me could no longer go because we wouldn't be back in time for his rehearsal dinner.

Anyways - we left Cartagena around 10am and arrived in Palenque around 11am. We were informed that our original tour guide would not be available due to the issue that caused the delay. Once there, we sat with the replacement tour guide and he began telling us about the history of Palenque. This was interrupted by another group of tour attendees arriving and then joining our tour. This happened twice. It seems like several tour companies transport people to Palenque and then just have them join whatever tour is going on. Again, not a huge deal but just not super organized. We were then guided around the town with stops at a candy maker's home, the main square of the town, and the dance school. We then had lunch which was fish with rice. After lunch we visited the medicine man and the boxing school. While it was really nice to see and experience these things, it was made a bit awkward with everyone we encountered expecting tips. The tour was $100 per person so I just wonder who/what the $100 goes to. I have absolutely no issue with sharing money with people, it just didn't feel natural to have everyone ask for tips. I think it might be nice to have an option to purchase a tip package with the tour booking that can be given to the people of Palenque without them having to ask everyone for tips. There was also a gentleman with books about Palenque issued by the government of Colombia who handed them out to people saying they were "gratis" but then at the end of the tour, he came and asked for payment for the books. Again, no issue with supporting but maybe don't mislead people. It would also be nice to have some sort of electronic way to donate to the town.

Some of the stops around the town seemed rehearsed which I totally get, but the tour guide wouldn't even translate my questions to the person who was presenting at that time. So there wasn't really room for much interaction on my particular tour.

It was very hot but that didn't impact the tour. Water and umbrellas were provided.

So I think the tour could be significantly improved but it is worthwhile to see the town and try and support the people of Palenque.

Thank you so much for your opinion. We offer our apologies. The person assigned to do your tour had an inconvenience when he was on his way to pick you up. These inconveniences were force majeure which prevented the initiation of the tour on time. For this reason we were forced to look for other alternatives to carry out the tour in a good way. All the services and places we visit in our tours are covered for what you pay, Each space receives a compensation, However, these places also have spaces for the sale of products and also spaces for voluntary donations. What happened with the person you found on the street with the books was a misunderstanding, this person does not know how to speak English. Once again we offer apologize for how the tour developed. Thanks to your comment we will continue working to improve.
