I shall not write a word about the caves themselves. That has been reviewed in many places by many people already. Let me focus on the tourist unfriendliness of this wonderful heritage site. First, the roads leading to this place are appalling. One has to endure a 100 km bone shaking ride over practically non-existent roads. Next, at the entry point one is at the mercy of state road transport corporation buses to get to the actual site. They are not friendly like the electric ones at, say, the Taj Mahal. These are huge diesel spewing buses which charge a fee. Nominally one has a choice of air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned buses but that is only if one is prepared to wait indefinitely. In practice, one has to take the next available bus, both coming and going, which could be anything and will only leave once it is full. Everyone is aware of the long climbs and walks at the caves and wears appropriate footwear. What one is not told is that at every cave one has to take off one's shoes before entering. Not only that, there are barriers at every cave placed in such a way that the attendants there can force one to enter from one side and exit from the other thereby being compelled to walk barefoot over the hot, stony surface to collect the shoes. Although that is not necessary; merely opening wide the doors will allow everyone to pass unhindered. At places where I insisted I was not stopped. One last point - the famous pictures of Ajanta are in an extremely dilapidated condition and not at all recognisable.
